Salvaging includes any of the skills listed below and is used to revert an item into Crafting components. Your skill level at Salvaging is based on your skill level in your Profession. Except for Runecrafting, which is unique, any item you break has a chance to yield material for the current tier plus the previous level, so an Expert will see materials from Tiers II and III, and so forth.

Activating the Salvaging skill will break any appropriate item. If you have more than one profession, you will have to choose the correct Salvaging icon.

The three Gathering professions (Butchers, Foragers and Miners) have no Salvaging ability. Apothecaries cannot break potions, but have the ability to salvage Planar Essences.

Some of the Salvaged materials are unique and cannot be obtained except from salvaging or as quest rewards from Workorders. They are used to make Enhancements.

Salvaged materials are not soulbound and can be traded. Materials of the same name but obtained by different Salvage skills are identical and can be used by the appropriate crafting profession.

Skill vs. Item Level
This is a rough guideline, since some items can be broken at lower or higher skill:

  • Novice - Skill 1: Item levels 1-20
  • Skilled - Skill 75: Item levels 19-38
  • Expert - Skill 150: Item levels 37-46
  • Master - Skill 225: Item levels 45-50
  • Grandmaster - Skill 301: Item levels 51+
The quality of the item may affect the skill required to break it. There appear to be no intermediate skill levels, so as soon as you reach 75 you will be able to break any item that requires less than 150.

If you view the salvaged mats as having 4 tiers of results, roughly equivalent to novice through master, you can see what items can give what mats when you reach that skill. The closer you are to the minimum required, the more frequently you will get lower-tier mats. The closer you are to the max skill for that tier, the more often you will get mats of the higher tier. Let's say your Armorsmith skill is 150 and you are breaking gear that requires 150 to break. You occasionally will get Tier III results but most items will be Tier I or Tier II. As you get closer to 225, the frequency of Tier III mats will increase.

Runebreak

Runebreak is an ability granted to Runecrafters. A rare result can yield one of the "combined" materials. There is also a rare chance to find Planar Essences. Runebreak is of paramount importance to the Runecrafter, as without it there is no way to obtain the materials needed. Runecrafting also has the ability to return top-end materials back into their low-end forms. Sadly, because someone found a way to exploit it, Runebreaking is no longer available for crafted runes.

The Runecrafting skill required to Runebreak an item is slightly different than the other Salvaging skills. The skill required to break is based on the item level, of course, but the skill required is one point higher than for other professions.

The quality of the Powders is directly tied to the quality of the item being broken rather than to skill. You may get lesser materials, but you can only get Sparkling Powder from Rare items, and Shimmering Powder from Epic items.

All Arcs, Blurs and Sparks are Uncommon, regardless of the quality of the item you are breaking, but you may get one of the higher tiers. Common items will yield only Arcs, Blurs and Sparks.

Further, the skilled Runecrafter can use the Transmute recipes to create an Uncommon Arc, Blur or Spark from a Flickering Powder, Shard or Crystal, and another material of the same tier, plus a catalyst. (e.g. Transmute: Kinetic Arc). These recipes are available at skill level 10 for Arcs, Blurs and Sparks; 60 for Charges, Glows and Surges; and 110 for Bursts, Flares and Blasts.

Salvage Armor

Salvage Armor is an ability granted to Outfitters and Armorsmiths.

Salvaging armor gives, randomly, one or more of the following based on the type of armor and its level, and has a chance to return Leather, a Bolt of cloth, or a Bar of metal up to the grade of the material that went into the production of the item. For instance, if a Bolt of Wool was required to make it, breaking it may yield a Bolt of Cotton or a Bolt of Wool.

† Can only be acquired by salvaging Epic items of level 48 and above.

Salvage Weapons

Salvage Weapons is an ability granted to the Weaponsmith. All weapons may be Salvaged but the result will depend on whether the weapon was made of wood or metal. In addition to the items listed in the table below, you can also get Bars of metal or Planks of wood up to the grade of material used to craft the weapon.

Salvage Planar Essences

Salvaging Planar Essences results in Planar Dusts and Fragments. When combined, the Fragments are used by Apothecaries in the crafting of Augmentations. Fragments and Inerts can also come from Workorder reward chests and Crafting Rifts (including Prisms).
