To get to Gyre-Carlin, you need to go to H-8 in Beaucedine Glacier - which is the Lv.40 capped zone. He can spawn on that map at these positions: G-8, H-7, and I-8.
Hope this helps. ^^
Good PT Setup To Go With?

i was wondering what would be the best party setup to go with to kil this NM...they say your normal XP Party would work but does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Well, crow gear has made concealing cuffs fairly useless.

In that specific tower there is (from the circular entrance room before you teleport) a western room an eastern room and a northern room.

To spawn gyre, check the western room, eastern room, and the dead-end room at the top. One of those rooms will have an extra diremite in it (or, in the case of the dead-end room, will have a single diremite). Kill it, check rooms after repop (15 minutes or whatever) and eventually gyre will spawn.

Enjoy. :p

(now, that wasn't so hard, was it?)

that mite looks bigger than normal mites, is it one of those rare nm's that spawn once a week>?

He's apparently popped twice on my server in this past week, after each of the maintenances, according to the two new 99,999,999 Rikonodo "sales" that appeared on our AH. I've been trying to talk to the people who listed them, but neither of the people have even acknowledged my existance so far. If I can ever get a response from them, I'll be sure to post what they said here.

That's a start though. Maybe always pops after maintenance? Anybody else on a different server see new listings on the AH on the 22nd or 29th of August? Of course that's not a real pop condition, but it's better than nothing.

Here is proof that it pops not only in the dead end room

http://www5.plala.or.jp/SQR/ff11/img-ff11/Gyre-Carlin.jpg

Furthermore, I see a total of 3 spiders in that room including the NM.

What we know so far

- It pops in the room behind the white door where there are 0 mobs (confirmed from the JP blog as well as Nihil, who posted in this thread).
- It pops in some room in front of a black door around 2 or more regular Diremites.

Sure that wasn't shopped? He doesn't look any bigger than the other mites around, while the pic that Snicky got makes him look pretty big.

Does that mean you got him to pop? If so, care to share what room he popped in and/or what mobs you were killing as "placeholders"?

I'm sorry, but I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was just stating that in the picture posted by Snicky, the NM looked much bigger than the typical Diremite. However, in the picture that you posted, the NM looked the same size as the other Diremites around it. I was just asking if you were sure that the screenshot that you found was authentic.

Ahh when you said "he doesn't look any bigger than..." I thought you were speaking from firsthand experience :) Anyway, no I'm not sure the picture wasn't shopped, that's the only picture Snicky ever posted of him. I would have though he would have posted a picture of him actually fighting the mob, but meh.

I don't doubt that Snicky's picture is authentic. It was the one that you posted that made me raise an eyebrow.

I'm pretty sure the one I posted is authentic. It doesn't have any photoshop headers if you hexedit the image, and seems to have been taken from within FFXI without using fraps or anything, due to the Square-Enix logo written at the bottom and stuff.

Unfortunately, in the room right outside the empty room, you have Black and White mixed up. So, it's still possible that it's in that room, and perhaps the lizards were killed, or just not in the area when the screenshot was taken. I plan to hunt around when I get some time and look for all possible locations where that screenshot could have been taken.

Me, Snicky the sneaky cat and some other ppl took George down on Carbuncle tonight. Got the x-bow to drop. Fight difficulty was about 7.5-8 on a scale to 10.

There is yet a single one of these bows to sell on Carby AH. I am quite pleased!

Victory is mine!

Awesome screenshoot proof!

Only dropped Rikondo but...wow. That was an incredibly tough battle.

I think the diabolos fight was easier.

incidentally, Diremites are quite resistant to dark. (Howly Moon for 37 damage ;_;)

Edit:
Yes, I know how to spawn him.
If you want details, please send 100m to Snicky@Carbuncle. 100m is small change compared to the 10-15m Concealing Cuffs this guy drops, right? I mean, his drop is (on most servers) worth 2-3x as much as a Scorpion Harness and almost as much as Peacock Charm...you can't believe I'd give that away for free. XD

meh. I'm just tired of being broke all the time ;_;

Edit again:
So far we've gotten 1 rikondo and nothing else. He seems to drop a florid stone every kill but other than that it's pretty random. We'll get those cuffs eventually -_-

I have killed this NM once, and the only time I saw it was when doing PM3-5 with my shell and we went the wrong way and there was gyre-carlin. He pops in the dead end room, and there are no placeholders. When we went there he was just sitting there and nobody was in the zone except us, so I really doubt he's lottery pop. My LS mate went back and sat there 24 hours later, and idled all night, and no pop. This guy may be a 2-3 day spawn, who knows.. He dropped rikonodo when we killed him.

AFK method
# Jul 12 2005 at 11:17 AM Rating: Decent
My LS has started using the AFK method.

I am using FRAPS which will save screenshots @ 7 minute intervals. (I can tell times by the time stamp on the files)

I have it set to save to my web folder so my LS can access it and see if it has popped.

--
I hope we'll soon find out if it is infact NOT a lottery pop, but a set timed pop..

I'll get back to you in 30 or so hours if it has popped or not.
Good-luck to everyone else using this method!

I personally don't believe this mob is lottery off of the Diremites. Yes I know how that started. eLeMeN FFXI database (JP ONLY) lists that information. But let's be honest, have the 2 drops ever even been listed on the AH on your server? How many people have honestly killed this NM?

I searched around some Japanese websites and found a blog of a player who had killed this NM. The description (rough translation) was like this:

Normally to get to The Shrouded Maw you go Red > Black > Red > Black. On the way, however, there is a white door. We went through the white door, and the NM was right there.

Now, I did this, and through that white door is absolutely nothing. Nothing whatsoever. An empty room with no connections to any other rooms. If this mob were really lottery, it should pop in place of another Diremite. But there is no Diremite at the spot where this JP player claims to have fought the NM.

IMO, there are 2 possibilities:

1) This is a 24 hour NM that depops after 5-10 minutes of not being aggroed. It only pops in the room past the white door.

2) This NM only pops during fog, and depops when fog is gone (similar to Elel in Sacrarium and Odqan in Misareaux Coast).

To add more evidence that this is not a lottery NM, I once actually camped this NM with 4-5 other LS mates. We killed Diremites for almost 8 hours, with no NM pop.

EDIT: For the curious (Japanese speakers), here's the blog I read:

Just to play devil's advocate, there's plenty of precedent for a lotto pop NM that doesn't spawn in the same place as its PHs (THF knife is probably the most well known example here). At any rate this NM seems really interesting, From the information so far it seems likely to be either Charybdis-like or land god-like in terms of pop conditions....

I too have read this blog. Neither Concealing Cuffs or Rikonodo have ever sold on Garuda's AH. I have talked to one person who saw Gyre Carlin, but it wasn't on Garuda. He saw it while going to fight Diablos. They didn't kill it.
I have wandered through 40-cap Pso'xja so many times now looking for this guy that I'm essentially the zone master. That empty room is the single most suspicious room I've ever seen. Ever. It's a random safe room in the middle of a ruin overrun with monsters. If something incredibly tough doesn't spawn there then my RPG spidy-sense is off.
However, it slightly conflicts with my report of the guy who was going to fight Diablos, because he'd have had to accidentally zone to the wrong area to see him. It is possible though, as the white portal to the empty room is right next to the black one that leads to the elevator to the lower area.

Some more Information:
The blog, which is the only first person account I can find, reports that he killed the monster with a regular xp party setup. Pld tank, ranger, BLM, WHM, BRD, maybe a Sam. The monster was exceedingly resistant to magic, but not bard songs, I think he said.

My interest in this monster is Impossible to Gauge. I will deal with killing him when he shows up, first I just want to see the fool and get some info. If anyone is willing to camp him in shifts on Garuda, /tell me. I don't have much longer in game though. >_>

Edit: Just as a note, if he pops in Fog, he doesn't pop in the room. Because I've been in Pso'xja in the room during Fog before, and no Gyre -Carlin. Ice, Double Ice, and Darkness are the ones I've seen so far there.

Went in again today. I think I've finally figured out how to get around Pso'Xja absolutely. I've named the rooms based upon their non-black or white color door. The trick to the area is that there are three rooms where Red is this color.

Green Room:
Black Door - Blue Room
White Door - Red Room 2

Red Room 1:
Black Door - Red Room 2
White Door - Blue Room

Blue Room:
Black Door - Green Room
White Door - Red Room 1

Red Room 2:
Black Door - Red Room 1
White Door - Blue Room

Red Room 3:
Black Door - Elevator to the bottom level
White Door - Mysterious Room

So Red Black Red Black gets you to the Elevator for Promathia Mission, and Red Black Red White gets you to the place where Gyre-Carlin is reputed to pop. I went there again yesterday. There was nothing. I stayed for nearly an hour, with nothing. Went AFK resting in the middle of the room, nothing. I'm going back as my White Mage tomorrow (because I don't care about killing it). I'm going to rest in the room and wait for Gyre-Carlin to pop and kill me. Anyone have any idea how to tell what time it happened? I'm going to be AFK for most of the time.

Typical method of determining ToD on mobs like that is turn on every single filter except a mob doing damage to you. Take off linkshell. Conquest update notifications are every hour on the hour, so look at what time you get back to your keyboard, and count the number of conquest update messages.

-If the mob really is lottery- then I don't think its placeholders are any of the mobs in the boldface rooms if you go Red > Black > Red > Black

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought of Conquest messages. I too doubt it is in the 2nd Black room. The 2nd Red and 2nd Black room both have IT spiders in them, while before that they were all T. It would be very hard to pop Gyre-Carlin if you had to kill IT placeholders.
Random Information:
As anyone who has Googled Gyre-Carlin looking for additional leads knows, Gyre Carlin is another name for a Scottish Goddess, keeping with Square's history of stealing names and characteristics from mythology. Here's a bio I found:
Caillech, Benie, Bric: {cal-yach} "Vield One"; Destroyer goddess of the Underworld; similar to Cerridwen and the Morrigan. Another name is Scota, from which Scotland comes. Originally Scotland was called Caledonia, or land given by Caillech. Some sources call her the Gray or Blue Hag, the Gyre Carlin, Black Annis, or the Hag of Beare. Was pictured as having a blue face, or three blue faces, and fangs. Disease, plague.
Odds are high Gyre-Carlin looks like a spider, because of the fangs thing mentioned in the goddess bio.

I went to this tower the other day to look into your post. On the Red > Black > Red > Black path, there are actually three white "doors", and the first two do indeed have Diremites and other connections. The third white "door" is the one that leads to the empty area with no other connections. Maybe the monster pops in one of the first two white "door" areas? I plan on finding out, looking for days if that's what it takes, and I will post back.

Crazayrayray and I and a few others from the LS went to camp this NM a few days ago. We all tried figuring out ways of what makes this NM spawn. Crazay had done some extensive research on this critter and was informed by a JP who'd managed to kill this NM two days in a row that this NM was lottery. Yet I'm inclined to agree with others that this doesn't seem to be likely. We spent about five hours there slaughtering diremites in the room beside where the NM is said to pop. We even had someone camping the room while we slaughtered the mobs. We even went downstairs to check the mysterious dead end room. No NM.

So now, like a few of you, I'm very adamant in trying to figure out the mystery behind this NM. I'm actually even willing to do as someone above was willing to do and to park my WHM in the middle of the room and try to get aggro.

I don't remember the exact stats on the DMG and Delay, and I can't check at the moment because of the maitenence. Going price on Asura is 2million, and only one listing, she sold it to herself.

Very nice considering the main two crossbows available are the Zamburak(lvl30) and the Arbalest(lvl50). Not much to choose from.

This crossbow and the Thug's Crossbow are probably going to be highly sought after.
