Placeholder and spawn area

Due to the new Trial of the Magians gaxe trial #365, I have some hopefully useful information.

Firstly, if you want to minimize the amount of time spent camping this, bring widescan. Alternatively, you can run around randomly killing raptors in the hope that one of them will pop the NM.

If you don't have widescan, try to bring someone who has it. It's not absolutely necessary as this is a seriously non-camped NM, but having it will save you effort. The raptors have a 5min respawn, and using a timer makes it easy.

On widescan, you will see a group of three raptors almost at the bottom of the list. When I camped this, the top raptor in the group was always the placeholder. When Daggerclaw spawned, he was always the bottom raptor in the group:

Jubjub
Raptor <-- placeholder
Raptor
Raptor / Daggerclaw Dracos
Goblins

The placeholder can spawn anywhere in the K-10, K-11, L-10, L-11 areas. I've seen it in all of them.

Second, as others have mentioned, the spawn area shown on the map is not entirely accurate. I've seen Daggerclaw spawn outside of it more than once. Because of the placeholder spawn area I mentioned above, it might be easier to just treat the possible spawn area as being the entire circular area plus the entire entry area.

Third, again as others have pointed out, watch out for Waraxe Beak. While doing that, WATCH OUT for Waraxe Beak. Some jobs can take him at 75, but don't take it for granted. He will aggro 75s, and my decently geared/skilled WAR/RNG lasted about 15 minutes before eating dirt. Duo with 75PLD wasn't a problem though. Don't AFK anywhere there if you don't know the ToD (21-24hr timed spawn) ... I've seen him wandering a long distance.

I hope this helps, and good luck.
mixed up?

From my experience the spots in which this guy and Waraxe Beak spawn on Alla's map are opposite. Perhaps the bafoon drawing the little lines got it mixed up but it should be known.. when I fought Waraxe Beak it was in the little path leading up to the big circle/hill thing, and when I fought Daggerclaw Fool it was on the southernmost part of the big circle, very far away from its alleged spawn area seen above... 0/1 on both mobs :)
My first nm!

Woohoo! After getting lizzy taken right under my nose and several deaths by other nm's, I got my first one. Took about 20 mins in the zone(and a waraxe sighting) knuckles loaded for me as well.
waraxe is just plane evil in my eyes

Spawned right in corner of K-10, outside area suggested by map. Killed raports for about 1.5 hours before it spawned. 0/1 ; ;
Hunting DD and Story: "9 lives not enough"
# Dec 12 2005 at 11:40 PM Rating: Default
I've only hunted DD once as 61thf/rng. 2 hrs of hunting and Waraxe pops on widescan. With my previous exp with him (see below), I knew i didn't have a damn chance so i did what any sensible thief does, hit flee on got the fook out.

9 lives not enough

Back in the days (about 15 months ago) when i was leveling my first job to 37 (war/thf), I decided to check out Meriphataud mountains. Having just zoned from Tahrongi Canhyon, I made my way east, killing raptors for the first time(yay new mob!), and having fun explorering a new territory. Then I check my map, see that I can got east no further, and head south. I reach a big dust bowl and head to the bottom, curious as to what I will find next. Spotting some gobbies hanging out by the fire, I decide to pay them a visit, and konk them over the head with my greatsword. After a quick scan of the surrounding area, I figured i'd head on back to Tahrongi Canyon and get a Chocobo. As I was about to head north and then west, I get hit by Stone III, and BAM!!!, 1/2 my life is gone. My **WTF** alarm goes off, my catlike rexlexes kick in(i just lost 8 of my 9 lives =^.^= ), so i turn tail and autorun while rotating my camera angle to find out whats dropped a boulder on me. Seeing nothing around me, I think I'm in the clear. My heartbeat slows down a little and I think I'm gonnna make it when ..... BAM!!! Waraxe Beak hits me again, and I eat a dirt sandwhich. First NM to kill me in the game, and I all got was a stone to the head, and a mouth full worm food.

Note: That ******* has the eyesight of an eagle. When he hit me with his magic he wasn't on my radar or within viewing distance.

lol, I was waiting for some more people to come help my friend get rank 5 and went to this area to get daggerclaw to have something to do in the meantime, i'm war47/rng23 (by standard, not for hunting) I saw the other nm, Waraxe, unlike others though, I didn't mistake the two, I stayed a bit back and widescanned for daggerclaw, while widescanning I suddenly got the message "Jahn is drawn in" I exited widescan and bam, Waraxe was there, I didn't know what lvl waraxe was so I said "Crap..." then he hit me for 275 damage, casted breakga, then hit me another 3-4 hits and I was dead, my advice on camping daggerclaw, don't stop anywhere near waraxe to widescan :P
easy

I killed raptors for about an hour, Draco showed up, I killed it in a few minutes with my 45drk/17thf, it has about 1000 hp, I got the drop and three skins from the raptors I had to kill to get it to spawn. 16k in a hour isnt horrible... not great but not horrible

*hint* It is good to know where waraxe beak is if he is around :)
Shredded
# Oct 26 2004 at 6:03 AM Rating: Decent
O.O i didnt think this guy was so tough. I was farming with a couple of friends and then this guy pops and kills one of the guys. I go to raise him (Im whm) and after i raised him i got killed by two raptors. After a while, another whm (67) comes and raises me. WarAxeBeak sees the whm and starts to fight him. After a few secs, whm uses warp and i got shredded as well as my friend. This guy is not playing.

As a 31 Rng/Nin i went way overboard on killing this guy. I figured Nm's are usually around 10 levels harder than the exp give, and for some reason lvl 28 stuck out in my mind. He went unclaimed for 10 mins or so before i decided I'm either going to die or go all out on this Nm. So i gave him a Barrage and a EES right after eachother for over 1000 dmg and 1 normal shot to finish the job. Didnt get a thing for my trouble, just 43 exp. Boy was that a waste of my 2hr...

Well I've hunted this guy twice. The first time, I took out my 46 DRG/THF, and had the misfortune of running into Waraxe Beak. Not knowing his level (and thinking I was stronger than I really was), I took him on. It took him 15 seconds to rip me to shreds...

The second time I took my 52 RNG back, and didn't see anything spawn but raptors and gobs. Not a good NM to hunt IMO.

Yea I have had a few encounters with him so far, 2 to be exact, he has not dropped once yet an my friend has TH I, I don't know if the time is worth it or if he should spend the 4k lol.
I can confirm what 2 others have already said, farther south he has spawned, I think mabye they are both in the same spawn zones, not entirely sure though. well anyways happy hunting

Total Waste

This NM is a total waste of time. I can't tell you how many times I've been through his area while farming in the mountains.

First off, it's only three raptors that you have to constantly kill. . . each with a spawn time of 5 minutes. IF he is going to pop he will be the third one to spawn in the area.

Also, there is no 'time' for spawns. That is total BS. This NM is a 100% lottery on the three raptors in the spawn zone. He has a minimum 24 game hour timer for respawn is all. . . most times it takes him 2-6 hours to spawn again.

Finally, he NEVER drops. It's like the freakin' rabbit charm. I have Treasure Hunter 2 and have never had him drop whereas other similarly level'd NMs have dropped EVERYTIME for me.

Don't bother wasting your time here.

.... If you camp this NM... and Waraxe is up... well, lets just hope you have a scroll of Insta-Warp handy. ^^;

I camped Daggerclaw a few times -- fighting fire elementals when daylight came around and the element popped.

All you have to do is SEE Waraxe, and he'll aggro you. His Aggro range is enormous. And yes -- Stonega IV did 982 points of damage to me as a lvl 42 dragoon.

Happy hunting. <.<

/Edit --> Got the drop 2/3 ^^ /dance

I stood pretty close to Waraxe Beak, not next to though, and he did not aggro.

He aggroes by sight so if you stand in front of him, then yes, you will get aggroed. Didn't know his level and tried to take him with Carbuncle as SMN31/WHM15.

Carbuncle misses Waraxe Beak.
Waraxe Beak hits Carbuncle 156.
Carbuncle misses Waraxe Beak.
Waraxe Beak casts Gravity.
Genius receives the weight.
Waraxe Beak hits Carbuncle 168.
Waraxe Beak defeats Carbuncle.
(Genius is running his Tarutaru legs off with weight.)
Waraxe Beak hits Genius 300.
Genius is defeated by Waraxe Beak.
Genius falls to level 30.
Beeeeeooooow.

That's my experience with Waraxe Beak, didn't see Daggerclaw the two hours I was there afterwards I came back farm/leveling.

Waraxe Beak does not aggro as far as I can tell. If he does, he does not have a very large aggro range. He is huge, so you should be able to see him coming from a long way off. I have never seen them spawn at the same time either. I was using wide scan to find them, too. Also, Daggerclaw Dracos does seem to spawn further back into the area where it shows Waraxe Beak spawning on the above map. I have twice seen Daggerclaw spawn in the far SE corner.

Not 100% on the aggro range, but:

I just saw Waraxe, and in my foggy memory I confused him with Daggerclaw and thought I could kill him....nope...

Anyway, the point: he does aggro. I hopped off my choco to attack, and as soon as I dismounted I heard his aggro "chirp." ....then he hit 3 times for about 400 damage and Stonega IV'd me for abou 950.

Haha this same sort of thing (confusing with Daggerclaw Draco) happened to me a while back. I was leading a party of my LS to go do mission 7 for windurst (yes i was going the wrong way but i didnt know where Oztroja was at the time thought it was in the corner there) and we saw this guy (Waraxe Beak) and I thought about it i and im like hmm i remember seeing a spawn spot for a lvl 27-30 NM in this corner this must be him. So Im like okay guys this guy is lvl 30 or something we shoudl be able to take him no problem, lets dismount chocos and fight... We are a full party of level 29-32's or so and we got pwnt. He opened the battle with stonega IV on me - luckily nobody else was in range cause it hit me for just over 1000 as i recall. Then he proceeds to start knocking off people one by one. BRD and THF both managed to get away and survive (not sure if they zoned or if he eventualyl gave up or what).

Kill raptors nearby. Should not take you more than 1-2 hrs. I killed it three times, but no drop....grrrrr
