Old Hillsbrad Foothills is the setting of the instance Escape from Durnholde Keep and is one of the timeways accessible in the Caverns of Time.
Taking place seven years before the present, when the future Warchief Thrall was a slave to Aedelas Blackmoore, the questing involves helping facilitate the escape of Thrall from his captors. The instance spans from Southshore over to the old Tarren Mill. The instance is a replica of a level 20 zone and players are free to explorable the area before starting any quests here. The areas where fights and bosses are found are few and far between so there is a leaving a wide-open zone for players to wander and explore. It is even encouraged that players seeking lore and the full backstory to the current Southshore/Tarren Mill conflict come here to see the tidbits. Bear in mind that players cannot wander too far from the zones in the instance. Currently, only Tarren Mill, Southshore and Durnholde Keep areas are explorable.
Players will enter the instance from a cave that replaces the Yeti Cave at Darrow Hill in present-day Hillsbrad Foothills. Once here, simply head south until you hit the east-west road from Silverpine Forest to Arathi Highlands. There are a pair of patrolling mages from Dalaran found along this road as well - a Sorceress and an Aged Wizard. As an aside, the Aged Wizard sells the enchanting recipe Formula: Enchant Shield - Intellect in a limited supply.
Also found on the road is Thomas Yance, a <Travelling Salesman>. He sells the coveted Leatherworking recipe of Pattern: Riding Crop for 5

If you wait a minute or so, they'll have a discussion about the upcoming war against the Scourge, which reveals some backstory about the Ashbringer in what appears to be their first meeting. This is most bosses from Scarlet Monastery as younger versions of themselves, as well as the prominent members of the Scarlet Crusade who splintered off to become the Argent Dawn because they disagreed with the Crusade's fanaticism.
- Sally Whitemane is in Southshore. She is the future boss of the Scarlet Monastery Cathedral but is currently playing tag with Renault Mograine, who becomes the future other boss from Scarlet Monastery Cathedral. Jimmy Vishas can be seen following them and he later becomes Interrogator Vishas in the same instance.
- Herod the Bully wanders Southshore and he is much bigger than all the other children.
- On the dock of Southshore, Zixil, an <Aspiring Merchant> can be seen building a robot, the Overwatch Mark 0 <Protector>. This goblin goes on to become the <Merchant Supreme> in the current Hillsbrad and patrols the area a traveling vendor, accompanied by Overwatch Mark 1 <Protector>.
