"Once you become a soldier, you never stop thinking like one. Part of you is always thinking tactically, 'Where's the most defensible position?' or 'From where can I make my most expeditious retreat?' I still can't sit in a tavern with my back to the doorway without feeling ill at ease.
"Since leaving my lord's service and settling here in Nordland, I've realized that we all make war everyday, each of us in his own way. Even if it's only a battle with the plow or a wrestling match with a tankard of ale, we plan, we scheme, and we fight.
"In a way, I'm almost glad I am able to make war again. I'm not at all certain that farming suits me."
