Don't get down on S-E for "not having their act together." I think you'd be surprised how well they "have their act together." Do you realize that updating and maintenance is common to all MMO games? Do you realize that many companies don't fix problems that they deem minor purely to please people who think there is no problem? Frankly, the fact that they perform maintenance and update is evidence that they DO have their act together, and from what they've been doing, the game is usually down for very short periods of time. As for not being able to use their game properly, i have absolutely no trouble using the game properly. If you DO have trouble, well, that is what tech support is for my friend. Tell me, would you rather have them be maintaining and updating, or would you rather them never release new expansions, or never make the game more interesting. Shame on you for getting mad purely because they are doing their job by making the game work right so that people like you can play it. NO MMO game has EVER been perfect and flawless at any point in it's development or when it was played, but at least S-E is trying, unlike most other companies. And for the record, the ONLY problem they seem to know about is the screen blackout thing, which they are working on. What you are suggesting is that it would be better if they didn't care at all and just never updated because they would be conceited enough to think their game was perfect. Well, news flash, nothing is perfect, even FFXI has it's problems, which i might add, are so small and miniscule, most people never notice them.

I just dont see the need for maintainance every month. Playonline is a very poor way of accessing the game, its slow, unclear and they could have done a better job in my opinion. And whats the deal with not being able to alt tab out?

The guys who write these updates need to take a high school english course. This is ridiculous. I have no idea how they are improving Assassin.

Actually this is what it exactly means. Asassin won't grant a full damage anymore, in short, it could miss as Sneak Attack.

This issue has been discussed/addressed at length on various pages. The filters need to be re-set user side.

quoted from hpsolo:
Quote:
"NPC" and "Others" refer to anyone not in your party. However, your party and alliance's current target is considered to be part of the party or alliance.

So if you want to see a Toroma's abilities, i.e. the comment:

The Toroma readies Chaotic Eye

then you need to NOT FILTER the Special abilities initieated by party members (or by alliance members). NPCs and Others refer to anything not in your party or alliance that are NPCs and other parties, respectively.

quoted from the update itself:
Quote:
- The chat filter has been expanded to include NPCs.

NPC Filter
Previously, all PCs and NPCs (monsters included) not in a player's party or alliance were treated as "others." However, with the addition of the NPC category in the chat filter, players can now toggle on and off the display of text spoken by other PCs, without filtering NPC speech (and vice versa).

Pet Filter
Messages regarding the actions of a player's pet are now categorized with the actions of his/her master. To filter the pet messages from a party member, a player would have to use the party filter options. However, to filter the pet messages of a non-party/alliance member PC, the player must use the NPC filters. This type of usage may be changed in a future patch.

Filter Accuracy
The accuracy of the existing chat filters has been improved. This has been achieved by assigning priority levels to different types of PCs and NPCs.

For example, previously, when a member of a player's party cast a spell on another member of the party, the "Effects of special actions on party" filter would not cover up the spell message; it could be filtered using "Effects of special actions on others." However, now that character priority levels have been introduced, this anomaly no longer occurs.

Also, HP recovery messages are now covered by the "Effects of special actions" filters.

We all understand that updates are a necessary part of the game, but wouldn't it be a great gesture -- goodwill-building, perhaps increasing customer loyalty in this era of "leaving for WoW" -- if SE were to CREDIT OUR ACCOUNTS FOR $1 on any day(s) on which updates-that-must-be-downloaded occur?

Over the years, I've played several MMORPG games and love FFxi; however, I've noticed FFxi has apparently designated almost all the regularly scheduled updates to occur in a specific and unchanging timeframe, coinciding with my time zone's afternoon and evening... prime playing time. Unscheduled updates to fix exigent problems are not the problem, and are indeed welcomed as a sign of their dedication to maintaining and augmenting gameplay. Nevertheless, the timespan of the regularly scheduled updates could and should be rotated throughout the world's time zones to instill a sense of fairness to all those who love and play this game. I understand the decision to retain a static timeframe is probably related to financial concerns, but adopting a more flexible attitude to the concerns of those across the globe may pay dividends in player loyalty and longevity.

I agree... These updates are needed... Yes, it takes time out of our online fun time, but its 1 day out of 28-31 days a month... Why would SE credit you for a few hours, when most people only pay $12.95 a month?! What, should i bed for a $0.10 credit for my 6 hours loss?? No, just be thankful that they care enough to keep things running for us Final Fantasy Junkies!!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I mean, honestly, everyone who had played an MMORPG before KNOWS that updates and maintenance are needed. This does not, however, mean that S-E is just gonna give everyone a dollar every time they fix the game for us. That is like calling the electric company to fix a powerline and them handing you 10 bucks for the inconvenience, it just doesn't make any sense. And on the "just be glad they care" thing, anyone who has played EQ will know what I mean when I say he is DEAD ON about that. SOE very rarely fixes problems unless people threaten to quit the game. While this reduces down time, it also greatly reduces how good the game is. If you were in a party, and you kept dying, yet you just barely got enough exp after each death that you were very slowly gaining exp overall, would you be unwilling to sit down for a few minutes to fix whatever the problem is that keeps killing you in order to stop the repeated deaths and speed up the exp gain? The answer is no, similiarly, saying it is bad that they update is like saying it is bad to stop you from dying just because it would create more downtime than dying would.

Interesting that you would use a power company as an example for Square Enix. Perhaps your reference is coincidental and then perhaps it reflects how you think about the companies who run MMPOGs. Power companies are very special types of businesses called utilities that often have an agreement with the local government to provide the power for that area. While this information seems obvious, these power companies are subject to governmental oversight - which I might add MMPOG companies are not subject to. But in a more realistic light power companies are legal monopolies that are guarenteed revenues and pay hikes because they hold their customers hostage in the sense that the customers must deal with them for their power needs unless they have their own power production facilities to sell power back to the power grid. Due to the nature of a guarenteed income, utilities often have very high debt and no assets - a very unique situation. These utilities are constantly pulling out their embarrasing profits to pay investors and salaries. In the long run utilities tend to be empires unto themselves and are very unresponsive to complaints or requests for better service. Was this connection mere coincidence or subconcious recognition of similarities between utilities and MMPOG companies? Murathek, you make a very interesting comparison.
