Shadows of Luclin

I finally got the chance to talk to Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler about Luclin... theres really not that much to be said about it this soon, but some tidbits nonetheless. The new race, the Kerran-like-people look more like tigers and panthers than they do the Kerrans from Kerra Isle on Odus. They're slated as a primitive race, so they'll tentatively be able to play Shamen, Warriors, Rogues, Bards and Beastlords. The new class, Beastlord, will tentativelybe playable by the current races that can play shamen. I'd suspect personally that the two classes (Shaman and beastlord) will share some similarities. The new graphics look good. They've added more polygons to most models I saw, the new creatures are rather *ahem* interesting, and the new models for characters look pretty good. The trolls look like they've become a health conscious race, and they've lost a wee bit of weight. Their standing animations look quite fearsome though. One big thing both Brad and Jeff spoke of was that the level of customization of your character goes up a fair amount. When creating a new character, you can pick the body the character has, the hairstyle the character has and the facial hair. This should go along ways to reduce the cookie cutter look of lower level characters at least. I don't believe they've finalized how to import the existing characters. The content is going to cover the full scope of the current level range. With no plans to allow leveling over 60 (big shocker eh?), the content is going to be mostly non-raid focused. Jeff was saying that as velious provided alot of high level options for the groups of 36+ people, Luclin will be provinging content aimed at the typical group of 6. High level characters will have "ways to advance their character", though they have not yet finalized what it will be in. My guess is that nothing will make you that much more powerful, and Jeff was saying that the advancements will also not be the sort of thing that takes 1000 hours of playing to do. With new content, and the complete face lift of the graphical engine, it seems that luclin is a worthy expansion. The new class will give the old EQ player something really new to do, as well as new takes on old classes with the introduction of the new race. I'll post more later on Luclin and a few other games I've been impressed with here, but for now I need a beer... this press center is hot and crowded... ;) --Illia

Wden again, and yes, if you turn enhanced ogre grphics on, they are very skinny, as are the trolls.

Well, I have Luclin, and I think it is very good. The graphics on my computer are like the Trilogy speed when no one is in my line of sight, and when a PC or multiple NPCs are in my sight, it becomes a little choppy. The graphics on Norrath, however, are the same as they ussually are, exept the enhanced graphics, but they are NEVER choppy down there. I am very pleased at how my Wood Elf looks in Chain Mail, and continue to look forward to good graphics.
Wden on Brell Serilis, send a tell some time.

HORSES!
# Oct 30 2001 at 3:08 PM Rating: Decent
Today I read in my catalogue that horses will be released in the eq upgrade of "The shadows of Luclin". I thought this was cool but what I found tottaly awesome is that they will be purchase able- although I cannot say how much I can only assume them to be expensive. I know that they will be unable to swim butI have no idea how to prtotect this investiment should u have to leave it. There are also going to be different breeds and i assume that different breeds will be faster and toughfer than others. I also know that the horses themselves will be faster than/or equal to dru 50th lvl speed/trvl spell. the horses will also incres the amount of weight you can carry draically (i.e. you set your stuff on its back)

This will no doubt be an awesome expierence for everyone!
o btw they will also be unable to enter dungeond so dru should go very well whis these guys indeed :p

thats it and if u one of my buddies (me Jaccob on morrel-thule)... WASSSSSAAAAABBBBBBBIIIIIEEEEE :p

I still haven't decided if I want to continue playing EQ after SoL comes out, or move on to DAoC next month. My hang up is simply with the graphics engine. What do these new models look like? I've seen a few, the gnomes and the trolls (or ogres) and well, um.. The trolls or ogres look ok, the gnomes are pretty sad imo. I love the way my half elf warrior looks in plate; how much better, or worse, is he going to look after SoL? Also, what will those new graphics cost in performance. My system is fast, and plays EQ in its current state very nicely. I am already dreading the thought of playing EQ at 800x640 and 20fps with all spell effects off, etc.

I've seen alot of talk about the new SoL. What I haven't seen is what exactly is a Beastlord going to consist of? I'm sure it will be a hybrid, but of what? A warrior and a shaman?

Its seems like to me they sound like a warrior/shaman hybrid i've heard that they will get special bonuses fighting unarmed like monks animal like attacks they will get pets

Max Levels
# May 23 2001 at 12:36 PM Rating: Default
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the max lvl for your characters was raised, would that not mean that there may have to be some signifigant remapping of exp tables? Then classes mihgt get nerfed or whathaveyou. Things like lower lvls gaining a little more exp per kill, to get them up to the median lvl, you know what I mean. That seems like an awful amount of work, so possibly it should wait until the next expansion.

I wanna know what the system req. is gonna be? If I know before hand I can upgrade my PC BEFORE the release (instead of crying in the isle at Wal-mart with a copy of it in my hand because it exeeds my system specs...)

missed points

Ok look at it this way all that was mainly said in the interview was "blah blah blah graphics blah" this is the same crummy game there just changeing the graphics to make it hold a candle to the new starwars game. by uping the graphics they have uped the lag in the game especialy after there making cloths move?? has anyone been on kunark since they made the wind blow the trees?? it was ungodly laggey. the game is still the same you still have to sit on your butt and med and heal for 30 min. there are still no good quests for newbes added and corpse recovery is still annoying.
RE: missed points
# Sep 04 2001 at 2:30 PM Rating: Default
If what you say about Starwars is correct( superior graphics and the such) and saying that a higher polygon count causes "lag" shouldnt Starwars have much more lag than EQ- correct me if im wrong
RE: missed points
# Aug 24 2001 at 2:07 AM Rating: Default
Your complaining about things that need to be, my friend. I hate lag, and yes, it will probably get worse, but if you didn't have to med or if corpse recovery was easy, then the game would be stupid. Star Wars will be great for all those wierdo fans that the movies have pulled from the freaky depths of humanity but to someone like me, SWs is just another Pokemon. EQ will always grow in levels achievable, items available, and all those other little goodies that I love. Some people will stick with EQ some people will get into another game that will just dead-end like Pokemon did. Oh yeah, and FYI, I think that the best way to make enemies is to say that a game is "crummy" (I think you mean crumby) on the biggest site devoted to that game. Have fun playing with Chewy and all that SWs crap :).
monks need love too!
# May 21 2001 at 9:37 AM Rating: Default
Oh please!! let them add monk to the kerrans! it sucks when you create a monk, you have to choose to be either a blind in the dark or a hated race!
after all, monks are people too! um... unless theyre lizards. or (hopefully) catpeople.

Eq Vs. Star Wars..?
# May 21 2001 at 1:48 AM Rating: Default
I have been looking at the new Star Wars game that they are working on, and after comparing the handful of Staw Wars screenshots to the handful of "New" Eq screen shots i must say that by the Obvious difference in quality, I will most likely never play EQ again once Star Wars comes out.

Just looking at the Star Wars game makes me want to play it, looking at the new EQ shots makes me want play Star Wars too =p

What is the big deal with SWs? It's just another friggin Pokemon... that lasted a little longer then Pokemon. EQ is going to be FAR better than the SWs game. EQ is NOT a graphics game (even though the graphics are pretty nice)! IMHO EQ is about 20 different games slapped into one. There's the RPing, the hunting/lvling, the buying/selling/trading, the guilds, the exploring, the strategy, the..... I could go for a long time, but I'll stop there for my fingers' sake. SWs will just be another one of those games that the fans (scary people, they are) will enjoy until the next movie/game comes out while EQ will continue for a LOOOOONG time.

Now ppl lets please have consideration of other gamers feeling before we start calling them freaks or Scary(well i happen to like bot titles myself). I can tell you the first time i ever saw SW and i have avidly followed it ever since(almost 22yrs). But i am also an avid RPGer and EverQuester. I still Play D&D regularly to have RL interaction with friends. I thoughrly(SP) enjoy EQ and i will in all probability at least give SW a try, possibly will play both.!
Screenshots
# May 21 2001 at 1:18 AM Rating: Default
Well i feel that thge screenshots were indeed a little boring.

The one thing that seemed nice was that the armor seems to exist independantly from the character model, so it is not just pasted textures over the existing models.

The weapons as well look nice, and it said somewhere in one of the interviews that they were adding flowing cloaks to the game.A cloak that is animated would be a big visual upgrade in my eyes.

If they are going to add cloaks, maybe they will add more hinged weapons like flails and etc. just a thought.

I did like the 3 bladed axe on the troll screenshot that i saw, the weapons and armor look better, the new characters look a little boring =(

maybe they might also add some better emote animations, who knows.

ok i'm done.

After seeing the new character models shown so far i hope they give us the option of whether to display the old or new character models(except kerrans of course) cause the gnome/troll/human shots released so far look butt ugly...tho i suppose the High elves/ogres can't look worse then they do now...but the best looking wood elves/dark elves/iksars/half elves hopefully won't be botched as bad as the current characters they've shown...they need to hire some real artists over at verant and should be embarrassed to release these ugly characters as their 'new and improved' characters after 2 years.
"Lag"
# May 20 2001 at 3:12 PM Rating: Good
Lag is a term referring to your internet connection sucking at sending packets. When you talk about problems with more surfaces in the models in the new engine, you mean "a drop in framerate", not lag.

Also, to the one guy, it's spelled Bertoxxulous. ;)

the new 3d engine doesnt make the characters all that great though it does make them equal to what ive seen of the anarchy characters. but the thing is this will cause tremendous lag compared to the old characters

The characters look kinda cruddy, though more advanced. The biggest difference is that they have completely lost all charm.

The troll mentioned here is the worst. It looks more like a more vanilla style of warcraft orc than the exaggerated fat long nosed EQ troll.

The human male in a screenshot looks about as vanilla as the ones now, the only cool thing is like all the other models the armor graphic now looks like a seperate graphic and gives the char more of a realistic plate armor barrel-chested appearance than the current slapped on texture super form fitting appearance.

The val shir male was almost like the human one. It looks far too humanoid shaped almost like they just stuck cat textures on the new human model, although it has cat ears and a more stuck out face.

Hopefully the shots are of real preliminary art and they will do more work later. One nice thing though is the armor looking totally seperate and it really looks troll like on the troll. The weapons look pretty cool also.

I forget now which site had the screenshots of the new characters, but it was next to an interview like this.

Oh, found it:

I don't think the new chars are that bad. They are deffinately a change though. What we see as a troll now is a big, fat, ugly, dumb.... you get my point and the thought of something different just doesn't click with our EQ heads just yet. Give the expansion a few weeks after you get it, then look at what you used to look like. I think you'll prefer the new ones WAY over the old ones.
