Talking Project Lore: Alex Albrecht

Screen Savers. Diggnation. Totally Rad Show. Project Lore? Alex Albrecht has been in the entertainment business for quite some time but his newest project, a niche World of Warcraft show for the web, is likely the most interesting. At least it is for us! The Project was setup to bring five guys, four camera men and one World, of Warcraft, together to create the best multimedia MMORPG game guides. Project Lore successfully captivates their audience on a weekly basis with their awesome chemistry, entertaining rapport, and coming together to show the progress of a group of level 70 players who love beer and pizza and loathe Fel Orcs.

In the coming weeks I'll be sitting down with all five of the guys to talk about their characters, opinions and lives, in and outside the World of Warcraft. Enjoy the interview and if you haven't already been watching, make sure to visit the Project Lore website to see what you've been missing!

Tamat : Thanks for taking a break from your busy life to sit down and talk with us about your latest show “Project Lore”. How is everything going?

Alex :  No problem! Glad to do it.  Everything’s going great.  We’ve been blown away by the response to the show and to the site.

Tamat : Now you’ve helped create some of the most successful internet series which include: Diggnation, Ctrl+Alt+Chicken and The Totally Rad Show. What inspired you to create something so different with Project Lore?

Alex : Well to be honest I was trying to figure out a project to do with the guys over at DECA.  We couldn’t really lock into anything that didn’t seem like a retread of the things I’d done before.  But I really liked the DECA guys and they were really interested in doing something with me.  Literally I was at lunch and Michael Wayne said “Ok, well, what do you like??”  I immediately said “Well World of Warcraft.”  Then it hit me, I’d had an idea for a webshow/site about WoW about two years ago.  We started the process of creating the show and site that day.

Tamat : How did you meet Zand, Jerry, Josh and Brandon? Were you all friends before you decided to start the show or was there an audition process?

Alex : Yeah, the boys are all old friends of mine.  Actually, all old friends of mine that I play WoW with.  I met Joshua when I was hosting The Screen Savers on G4TechTV.  He was the series producer and he’s the one that got me hooked on the whole MMO thing.  He dragged me into Star Wars Galaxies, my first love.  Joshua and I both met Brandon in SWG.  As we hopped from one MMO to the next Brandon always hopped with us so we stayed friends even though at the time he was living in Arizona.  I met Jerry and Zand through my other pal Jeff (co-host of TRS, and guest player on PL).  So when I was setting up the show I had been playing with Joshua, Jerry, Zand, and Brandon already.  It was an easy decision.

Tamat : What does the ‘end game’ look like for Project Lore? Obviously, it’s entirely likely that you’ll go through all the Wrath of the Lich King content before another expansion is released. What then?

Alex :  Well, that's a really exciting question. Truthfully, it's one that we're figuring out. Obviously, we are fans of the game, and there's never a lack of great stuff to show and discuss about WoW. Will the show be the same "five guys playing through an instance?" I'm sure there will be some of that, but I think we're going to increase the scope of the videos that we supply. For instance, our Death Knight quest series hosted by Zand, the Ten Days of Knight, has been hugely popular.

Tamat : Let’s rewind back to your time with TechTV. You still have quite a following from your stint on The Screen Savers. Do you think your fans are receptive to this new project?

Alex : Oh yeah… Most of the people that watch my other stuff and play World of Warcraft enjoy Project Lore.  Also it’s clear that we have a lot of people watching and enjoying Project Lore that have never seen anything else I’ve done.  That to me is the measure of the projects success.  I love getting e-mails from people who love the Totally Rad Show and say “hey I didn’t know you did another show called Diggnation!  Crazy.”  That to me is a win.

Tamat : What excites you the most about Wrath of the Lich King?

Alex : For me it’s that all the end game raids have a 10 man mode.  I loved doing the 25 man raids in BC but it was always so much harder to get scheduled.  The 10 mans were great because you could hop on and just say “Hey anyone want to do a ZA run?” and within a few minutes enough guildies would be ready to head over.  Super excited for that.

Tamat : Are you excited about the Rogue changes that went in 3.0 as well as the expansion? Which of those changes are you most excited about?

Alex : You know to be honest I’m glad that Blizzard is making (or trying to make, we’ll see how it goes) Dagger specs more viable in raids.  As a raiding Rogue I was stuck in the combat swords, sin strike, slice and dice, lather rinse repeat setting.  To me Rogues should be stabbing people in the back and then vanishing.  So I love some of the new talent abilities like Shadow Dance.  Again, we’ll see how viable it is in the raiding content in WotLK.

Tamat : Well, congratulations on all of your success. Do you have any words of advice for those of our readers who want to pursue a life in the entertainment business?

Alex : Make your own magic happen.  No one’s going to do it for you.  Get a camera, point it at stuff, and put it online.

Tamat : Thanks again for sitting down to talk with us. It’s been a real pleasure!

Alex : Hey thanks for having me.
