Verant Institutes a Character Transfer Service

Verant has introduced a new service where, for a fee, they will transfer your characters over to a different server or from one account to another. It should be noted that characters will not be allowed to transfer items and coins with them to the new server, and further noted that this service will not come cheap. Check out the rates and rules at this link.

I do not think that Verant was trying to make money. They don't want you to transfer from your server (except under /movelog) unless absolutely necessary. They made it so you would lose all items & cash on transfer BECAUSE...
EXAMPLE:
Let's say you have 10 manastones. If you go to a server that has no manastones, guess what? You would be able to adjust the price how you wanted it. Nobody could do jack about it if you were the only holder of Manastones on the server. You'd become rich, and BAM... The economy is thrown out of wack..

From the official boards:

Quote:

Hi all,

I just wanted to add some info about the new character transfer service. Some people have posted/asked 'Hey, you were always against this before! Why are you changing this now?'

Well, there have been three major reasons we've not accomodated server moves before:

1. We were concerned that it would upset the economies on the destination server

2. We lacked the manpower to accomdate the moves.

3. We were afraid one server might be perceived as 'better' or more 'popular' and that players would flock there, leaving one server undercrowded and the other overcrowded.

We've now addressed these three issues:

1. You move without items, and the cost is someone prohibitive. In other words, players will hopefully move for the right reasons now, and being sans items shouldn't measurably disturb the destination server's economy.

2. We've updated our billing system and automated much of the task, such that the manpower hit is minimal.

3. We're pretty sure we have enough servers now (which wasn't the case in the past) such that this won't happen. That said, if it does happen (or if anything 'bad' happens because of this), I assure you it will be turned off ASAP.

Also, the page of rules and details regarding the move will be amended very soon, to include the following:

1. Transfers from servers to servers with disparate rule sets (for example, from a PvP server to a non-PvP server) will not be allowed.

2. Only one request for a move will be allowed per account per 6 months (this number is subject to change, but is what we're leaning towards now). So, in other words, you have one chance to move between 1 and 8 characters to another account/server every six months.

Um...

VI didn't offer this to make money. If they really wanted to make some more money they'd offer it at a lower price and let you move with coin/items. ALOT more people would be inclinded to use the service.

Brad even stated, (contrary to popular belief) that he isn't interested in ruining the game in the long run for a quick penny now.
Nice move Verant

Yet another example of Verant's desire to make money over offering good customer service. With the profits they've made, you'd think they might do this for a lot less. When you have AO breathing down your neck, a move like this isn't necessarily a good one.
