Live News from Fan Festival 2007

The opening ceremony has totally floored us, to say the least. Not only did they go through the history of Vana'Diel (which was breathtaking) they also revealed some extra goodies...

FFXI WILL BE WINDOWABLE NEXT TUESDAY!!!

The window will be fully resizable WHILE you play!

You heard it here first!

On top of that, they also briefed on Scholar and Dancer and are allowing people to test out the new jobs. From what they said, Dancer is meant to be a Healer/Enfeebler/Buffer using their TP to form combos which build up points for Finishing Moves in their dances.

Scholar is not just a support job, but a job that is fully capable of hitting the front line using their job abilities. Unlike other jobs, their job abilities don't have a recast timer; they use points. That also allows you to combine job abilities to fully maximize a white or black magic spell. As you level up, you will gain the max of 3 points to use job abilities at your whim. Points generate by 1 every 4 minutes.

Stay tuned for more as we get 'em!

The only concern I see here for PC users wanting to look stuff up while playing is this little gem SE stuck in there:

You may lose your connection and be returned to PlayOnline when performing the following actions while FINAL FANTASY XI is running:
Activating certain screen savers
Starting other applications

Still cool though...

Well i dunno about everyone else but i kinda think SE did this for 2 reasons.
1. duh ppl are gonna use windower anyways might as well give them a legal verson.

2. this is why I think they did it. Ppl can play at work! i know plenty of ppl who quit because they couldn't play at work. they had the option but without windower they were screwed. Se can make cash offa this. Everyone knows SE is a business like any other. that warning messege when you log on is just there to look good. They want you to play when ever you can. If you ran a online game wouldn't you think the same way?

I know i sound like a conspericy theorist.. but seriously.. i think thats the main reason why.
Also i really don't care why they did it. its a nice feature to have. it'll save my wife from logging off if we need to check something ^^

just my opinion though.

I hope people understand why SE is doing this.

1) Because every other MMO allows it, consumers expect it, and there aren't really good arguments not to allow it.

2) Because an overwhelming number of people are using windower right now, so if they ban all of those people, they'd lose a ton of customers. On the other hand, they can't allow people to use ANY 3rd party programs without jeopardizing the integrity of the game

So here's the point:

Starting next tuesday, you better not be using a windower or any of the plugins that go with it, because SE is going to suspend/ban your butt. Now that you can use your PC the way it is legitimately meant to be used without using a 3rd party app, you have no excuse to use a 3rd party app.

On the subject of SCH: Having a single charge every 4 minutes is a bit weak, TBH. Granted, the effects are quite strong, but most of your casting is going to be done without the benefit of the Strategems.

Actually unless the official windower allows you to input Japanese text theres still a perfectly good reason to be using the unofficial windower.

So... sort of how you can simply turn on your TV too? Keep the issue logical. I still can't use my PS2 to do other things while I'm playing ffxi. Windowed mode is a luxary that SE shouldn't have broken down and given you all. :)

I have to disagree, if you think about it logically the PS2 and 360 are game systems that are made to play games. A computer is a lot more than just a game system, and where you can easily log onto your computer to look up information, unless we want to log out every 10 minutes we can not.

I believe that making FFXI windowed for PC users was a very smart move and has made everything fair, because now like PS2 users and 360 users we can look up information online without disrupting game play.

Thank you SE.

Ummm...... What exactly is a PS2 used for? Playing games. What is FFXI? A game.

What would you possibly window into on a friggin PS2? The all powerful PS2 browser?

PC and PS2 are two totally different animals.

Atleast on PS2 you can look things up on a PC while you play. PC players would be forced to logout of the game to do the same thing, since FFXI took control of the whole computer, and would crash if the game window lost focus.

Please try to keep it real.

well
# Nov 16 2007 at 11:15 AM Rating: Default
To be frank, anyone that wanted to run the game in a window already is (despite it probably being against the "no 3rd party software" rule). However, it's nice to finally see some official flexibility on the issue.

They didn't get hacked because the used Windower. They got hacked because they weren't smart and gave out their account info to "friends" or got hacked because they downloaded some other 3rd party apps that contained key loggers. There was another instance where people visited a website that installed a trojan automatically on their PC and stole account info.

Don't post fictitious info.

so what it makes it sound like your saying is when you first get scholar, you can only use 1 job ability every four minutes? and the max points you will be able to get is 3? which means you still need to use them extremely sparingly :/

Dancer sounds fun though.

From what I saw, each step you do takes up 10 TP to use while you are fighting. You get status icons at the top that shows how many dance points you have to use them for a finishing move.

Scholar has -alot- of job abilities. It has it's basic "White Mode" and "Black Mode", but it has additional goodies to stack up along with the mode.

I'm ridiculously anxy to level up Scholar! I'll let you know more when I get to test drive it here.

there is no need for another tank. There is already 3 (Pld, Nin, War), and I think with the right configuration, a Blu can tank. The window thing is interesting though

# Nov 19 2007 at 10:08 AM Rating: Decent
From what I've heard so far, DNC might be able to Tank. Please note the use of the word "might." Check out the DNC forums job threads. From what I read they seem like they will make a good Sub for tanks too, having some form of Provoke (?).

Unfortunately, I have not played or seen much of the new jobs, I'm just going by what I have read.
