Speaking as a non-comics person, the characters are boring and the elastic man thing works in The Incredibles where it's animated but just looks silly when actualized as "reality".
Well, they made a dude that shrinks and talks to ants work, so I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. And The Incredibles basically is Fantastic Four so we know it's not impossible to make storywise.

If the deal goes through and the MCU gets the rights to Fantastic Four, X-Men, and pretty much the entire roster of villains I can't really imagine we'll even see much of either until like Phase 5. They really go out of their way when it comes to planning this stuff out, and I can't imagine they'll just plunk these characters into the movies without strategy.

Deadline is reporting that Ian Chen will play Eugene Choi, while Jovan Armand will play Pedro Peña in DC's Shazam. Another pair of kids that Voltron into Flashpoint Paradox's version of Captain Marvel with Billy Baston.

Eh, the Incredibles is superficially the Fantastic Four but The Incredibles has the family element with a parent-child component that F4 lacks, you've got that whole "midlife crisis" and "hidden hero" thing going on, genre subversion, etc. Plus you can't discount the extra flexibility animation gives you both in effects and audience expectations.

For "We're a family who bickers but comes together when the chips are down" flavoring, Guardians of the Galaxy did it better than any of the Fantastic Four movies. I just don't really see what a new F4 movie brings to the table that isn't being better done elsewhere, especially after the bad taste the last couple of movies left. Maybe I'm wrong but the idea of a new F4 film generates zero interest from me.

Finished Gifted: Blondie's betrayal was expected, but I thought she'd end up being one of the Sentinel Services' Hypno-Mutants. Didn't see her being part of a Powerful Mutant Triplet.

And another step toward understanding from Mr. Sentinel Services ruined...

Netflix Punisher gets a second season. First season was good, so definitely looking forward to that.

Well, technically Johnny and Ben take the place of the children with how they act, and seeing as how we're this far into the MCU they can also do the "hidden hero" thing, but otherwise I agree. F4 isn't an easy project to realize.

As far as The Gifted goes, I'm a bit miffed that they killed the red head. Her character wasn't particularly interesting, but she was good eye candy.

Lucifer more or less was exactly what I expected. I called the new guy as the villain the first time he showed up on screen, and they just made it painfully more obvious as it went on.

I'll be seeing Star Wars on Friday. I'll probably post some thought after.

21st Century Fox has sold a ton of their stuff to Disney for $53mb. According to the LA Times, some of those assets are Fox's movie and television studios, 22 regional sports channels, two major cable TV brands (FX and National Geographic), as well as Fox's network of international media operations.
Disney CEO Bob Iger wrote:
[Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what's coming, we think we can manage that fine.
That's a bit reassuring.

Botnik is, for all intense porpoises, something of an artificial intelligence program that writes books. I bring that up because it was recently programmed to write a Harry Potter book and it's first page alone is amazing. Here's a passage from the story.
Botnik's Harry Potter & The Portrait of What Looked Like A Large Pile of Ash wrote:
Harry could tell that Voldemort was standing right behind him. He felt a great overreaction. Harry tore his eyes from his head and threw them into the forest. Voldemort raised his eyebrows at Harry, who could not see anything at the moment.
Truly magnificent.

Erm ... yeah. I have no excuse for that mistake. Still refreshing a dozen sites trying to find new information. Short of a truly spectacular tweet I'm pretty sure Disney is going to dominate the news cycle this weekend, with this news and Star Wars.

Christopher Meloni is definitely great and has pretty impressive range as an actor.

Titans costumes have been revealed. Brenton Thwaites as Robin, and Alan Ritchson & Minka Kelly Hawk & Dove.

According to sources, Bob Iger confirmed that the Marvel properties will be handled by the Marvel studio so it'll thankfully supervised by Kevin Feige. Also according to them all the details and crossing of i's and dotting of t's will take about a year, so presumably that means that Fox's current slate of movies will be finished and released before the MCU takes over.

For Fantastic 4, I think the best thing to do on that, is to make them cameos or helpers in someone else's movie. You can have Beast, from the X-Men, looking for help with a situation, and have him contact Reed Richards. Then, in the next battle sequence, the other 3 members of the team come to help, and you have an X-Men story with some Fantastic 4 assistance. No backstory on them, no character development. They just help out. If you do that enough, there may be an interest from the Marvel fan base to see a Fantastic 4 movie, as long as it isn't another origin story.

Alright, I've seen "The Last Jedi". Spoiler free version, It was pretty good, but had some problems. "Star Wars" fans should be pretty happy. SciFi fans in general should be too. Action fans will probably find quite a bit to like as well. If you're going in just to clear up the unanswered questions from "The Force Awakens", you'll be a disappointed. It's not that some of the answers aren't there, it's just the by the time you get them, they're pretty underwhelming. It definitely feels like JJ and Johnson had different priorities when telling their stories. JJ set up several mysteries in his movie, and then Johnson was like, here's the answers, let's move on.

Now, the spoilery version.

The story mainly focuses on two separate battles. There is an extended space battle between a fleet of First Order ships and a smaller group of Resistance ships. Most of the story revolves around this extended battle. The problem that I have with it is that the physics of the whole thing don't make a lot of sense. Basically, the Resistance ships can stay far enough ahead of the First Order ships that the First Order can shoot them, but at that distance they're weapons can't get through the shields. Now, I could buy this if they were using weapons that depended on physical impact to do damage. These are energy weapons though, they do damage by being a concentrated ball of energy that then transfers that energy to the target. The speed of the impact would be the least of the damage delivered. It moving a relatively short distance through space really shouldn't weaken their effect at all. You could call this nitpicking, but since most of the story depends on this extended battle taking so long, it's a fairly big issue.

The other battle is a battle of wills between Kylo Ren and Rey. It's surprisingly well done, even if the outcome is hardly surprising. Though, I did find the way that Kylo took out Snoke fairly well done.

The other major problem I had was the completely wasted use of Finn and Rose. They get together, go on a side quest that fails, eating up a good twenty minutes of screen time, and then get back to the fleet for the end of the movie. If they were left out of the movie completely, it wouldn't have affected the story at all.

As far as the story that was circulating a few months back about how Mark Hamil wasn't happy with the direction that Luke's story went. Now that I know what happens in the movie, I agree with him. At the end of the "Return of the Jedi" Luke was ready to die rather than turn to the dark side. He believed so strongly that there was still good in Vader that he left himself completely open to attack from the the Emperor. In this movie, Luke senses the darkness in Kylo Ren and it scares him so much that he briefly pulls his lightsaber on Kylo while he's is sleeping, which is the push that turns Kylo to the dark side. I just don't buy it. Someone that could go through what happened in "Return" wouldn't scare so easily, and he certainly wouldn't have made such a huge mistake.

The last bit I'll mention, I really don't know how they're going to not include Leia's character in the third movie. When Carrie Fisher died, the execs over at Disney claimed that they wouldn't be using CGI to keep her character around, but this movie ends with the clear intent that Leia would still be around for the next movie. Considering how they went and killed off Luke at the end, the only real tie left to the old movies would have been Leia, which doesn't seem possible now. They can go full force ghost and bring Luke back, but I don't see them being able to have his character around very much doing that without feeling cheap. It would seriously take away from the end of this movie to just bring him back like that.

I know it seems like I'm complaining a lot, but I really did like the movie. It was more than worth the price of admission. The piles of money that it's going to pull in I feel is well earned. I just can't look past some of the bigger issues.

Last Jedi: Enjoyed it. But a few places called it "best out of all of them" which... I think is stretching it a bit.

Agree with Turin on the whole "Finn and Asian Girl" thing.

Luke's appearance in the final battle ended pretty obviously. They focused a lot on the disturbed salt flats showing red, and then zooming in on Kylo and Luke's feet during the battle. It was suspected during his meeting with Leia and confirmed during the battle before the reveal.

Also, if Chewie already killed and cooked a bunch of the birds, why would he then have a problem eating them as the others watched? And it's all better that he didn't eat them, now they are all buddies, even though he's holding the cooked corpses the whole time. Smiley: lol

Annoying woman next to me kept talking the whole time. When Luke was saying to Rey, "Who are you?" she kept saying, loudly, "You're daughter!". And when Kylo was making his "rule with me" proposal to Rey after killing Snoke, she kept saying, very loudly, "Marry me!". And annoyingly saying "AWWWWWW!" every time one of the birds and ice foxes appeared on screen. I wanted to punch her in the face.

I too don't know how they'll successfully write Fisher out of the film. I thought when she "died" at the very beginning it was "really? That's how? Kind of lame..." But then she Forces herself back to safety. And I kept expecting her to fade away with Luke in the end, but she never did. If her fate is handled off screen between 8 and 9 that will be disappointing.

Notable trailers:
Avengers Infinity War (of course). Nothing actually new there.

Annihilation: Natalie Portman as some sort of biologist exploring a mysterious region appearing on earth that makes everything inside of it all weird, alien-like, and crazy evolution-wise. Looks like FX Movie fodder to me.

Mortal Engines: A series of books I have never read. Really high production values, Peter Jackson's next LotR attempt it looks like. What bit I've read/seen about the series sounds good. Mad Max, but with giant steampunk cities roaming a wasteland instead of just convoys.

Ready Player One trailer seems to have revealed the full story. Previous trailers just showed the world. This trailer (first time I've seen it, some extended one) has shown the ultimate goal of the movie being a competition to inherit the creator's fortune and creation.

Will Smith's movie, Bright, on Netflix got shit on pretty bad today as it was released. "Worst Movie of 2017" was used quite frequently.

But, I don't really understand where that is coming from (Actually, I kind of do. It's cool to hate on Will Smith and Scientology.). It was a good movie. As long as you don't mind cliche fantasy themes being applied in a modern setting. Personally I don't think it's done enough, and enjoyed it mostly due to that. It's part of the reason why I really liked Terry Brooks' Shannara and Word/Void books.

There were some obvious modern social equivalencies made. But not nearly as bad as CW shows can be. And his character was well played.

And I realized this week that I never watched Season 2 of Ash vs Evil Dead (for some reason). After a coworker started talking to me about Season 2 (which I thought I had watched) and I couldn't remember anything about the scenes he was describing. So now I'm on Episode 9 of Season 2 and enjoying this season more than the first. (Almost done). But I did point that same coworker to Happy! on SciFi. And I'm pretty sure he was hooked after watching the Trailer.

Cliche fantasy themes, cliche action movie themes, and cliche buddy cop movie themes. The whole movie feels like a tvtropes checklist. Alien Nation with d20. I mean, I enjoyed it, but there really was zero twists in the movie so no real tension or surprise.

X-Files returns Wednesday. Last season was pretty good, so no real reason to believe this one won't be as well.

X-Files: I had hoped that they would do the "creature of the week" thing a bit before going 100% story progress... the episode seemed to be throwing a lot at you for the start.

Wanted a little more fun before they got super cereal on us.

And... the 9-1-1 show starts with the "Called 9-1-1 cause I didn't get my Chicken Nuggets." I'm not a plumber, but I'm pretty sure a baby that size isn't fitting thru a p-trap on a toilet, considering it was stuck in a 4" pipe.

I'm not a huge fan of the serious episodes, so I kept fading in and out. Something about their disappeared child and her brain sending SOS signals. So ... everything that happened during the last episode of last season was all just a hallucination? Also apparently this is Gillian Anderson's last season on X-Files.

Also on Fox, The Gifted has been renewed for a second season. I like the show, but I'm not sure if it's because it's a good show or because it's Easter Egg game is on point. I enjoy the absolute hell out of all the little references.

We've known for some time that there was a shake up coming over at WB with their DCEU movies, and we're starting to find out what some of them are. According to Variety, The Conjuring and IT executive producer Walter Hamada will now be named the president of DC Film Production. He'll be working with Geoff Jones, who will remain president and chief creative officer of DC Entertainment. Personally, just looking at Hamada's imdb producer credits shows he's about hit or miss. I mean, sure he has IT, but he also did the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. Also it doesn't look like he has much experience with big budget films.

Mulder and Scully's Super Special Star Child is not actually Mulder's. Smoking man drugged and raped Alien-Scienced his Seed into Scully.

Extended Mulder car chase action get away scene seemed very out of place in my mind.

I know it's the X-Files but ... damn that's out there.

Captain Marvel's supporting cast grows by one as they bring Netflix's She's Gotta Have It DeWanda Wise aboard. No word who the character is, but speculating based purely on looks would suggest Monica Rambeau, a previous Captain Marvel herself and star of the much better comic series Nextwave.

Also, anyone in the Burbank, California area feel like watching people make fools of themselves? Apparently there's going to be a peaceful protest to force WB to spend millions of dollars to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League. I'm betting that goes well. Apparently the petition didn't work, and the forsnydercut webpage is still four days from completion or some junk. It's on Saturday, a day when no one will really be there.

Honestly, the idea that energy based weapons become weaker over distance in a vacuum makes a lot more sense to me than say physical weapons (which would not at all). The concept of being "out of <effective> range" in a space battle is a pretty standard thing in Sci Fi. My much bigger issue is that the whole issue with the Rebel cruiser being faster (presumably higher acceleration rather than some kind of top speed issue) than the Order's Star Destroyers (which is why they were able to move out of effective range in the first place). Um... But then shouldn't they have continued to increase the distance? I get the visual of the destroyers plinking away at the cruisers shield from long distance from a drama point of view, but it was very very annoying from anything remotely resembling a science pov.

Not remotely enough to make me not enjoy the film though.

Actually, worse than nothing. If they had not embarked on that entire side quest, and had just trusted the admiral chick, hundreds of rebels would not have died. They directly caused their deaths because the *only* result of their actions was to hand over the cloaking codes being used to mask their escape to the Order. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure how they went from "we're hacking the Order's ship to make them lose their tack on our cruiser" to "we got caught, and now they can somehow see and target our escaping ships". That whole bit was quite hazy to me when watching it. But it was made clear that because they had been captured, the Order figured out what the Rebels were doing and could target their ships.

Of course, if those rebels had lived, then it would have created an additional problem in that there would not have been enough room on the Falcon to transport all of them off the planet, presumably leading to some kind of lottery to see who got left behind. Or a death match. Or something.

Yeah. It was out of character for him. But I think that was part of the point. I think there's a theme going on with regard to the Jedi and how it relates to the Skywalker family itself (very much in the background though). I could be totally reading into things, but here's my theory:

The problem, which has been the guiding background to all of the Star Wars films, is that the Skywalkers are "broken" in terms of how the force is traditionally used/balanced. For "a thousand generations", the Jedi managed to exist, balancing their use of the force (for good) against the Sith's use of it (for evil). Very black and white. The problem with Luke (and Anakin, and presumably Ben as well), is that they are "balanced" themselves (ties into the whole prophecy thing). They have both light and dark in them, and can see it in others as well. It's why Luke sees the good in Vader, and why Anakin both fails to see the evil in Palpatine and also is willing to follow his teachings (to save those he cares about, of course).

Everyone else who has force powers is portrayed in a very black/white manner *except* the Skywalkers. They seem to be flexible with the force. And the result is a whole lot of collateral damage. I think Luke realized this at some point. I think that the whole bit about drawing his lightsaber on Ben, while "out of character", is actually a reflection of this fact. He doesn't "feel" good or evil. He has to consciously think "I'm good" to behave "good". His natural instinct, just like Anakin's, is to use his powers for whatever purpose he's set his mind to. So yeah, he's trying to create a new crop of Jedi, so he's going to protect them. He see's into Ben's mind (ironically a reflection of his own mind), and reacts. Then has to stop himself. Just as he had to consciously choose to do so every other time we've seen him in a situation like that.

I suspect that's why Rey is so important. It's why it's significant that she's *not* connected to the family in any way. She's the path to restore the Jedi to what they naturally are, not Luke, not Ben. They have to die and be removed for the force to return to its natural state (well, or at least the whole Jedi/Sith thing). Rey doesn't feel the same conflict that they do. And I suspect that *none* of the other Jedi (or Sith for that matter) had the same sorts of inner conflicts.

Dunno. Just my pet theory. Seems to fit what's happening though. Bit radical on the "but he/they are heroes!" angle I suppose.

Yeah. No clue on that. I assumed they were going to kill her character off, and it sure looked like that's exactly what they were doing, but then... Nope. Maybe they didn't want to show her dying, thinking that might make fans even more upset. Dunno.

And I'll also say that I really really liked the film. I might even go out on a limb and say that this is the best SW film to date. It was very much like Empire, but IMO was much more deep in terms of meaning, specifically with the bits about Luke and Rey (and not the whole theory thing from me btw). And I really really loved the appearance of Luke at the end. Thought that was just about perfect.

Thirteen people showed up to loiter around across the street from the closed studio's gate. That'll convince them. Smiley: thumbsup

Agents of SHIELD: You know, when comparing DC and Marvel live action products people keep referring to DC as the darker, more adult product. I find that hard to believe when Tess was killed and left floating in the hallways as a literal message to all the other space-age surfs to stay in line.

Apparently the new Star Trek Discovery had the first male-on-male kiss the other day. I only know this because a bunch of pages I read were making a big deal over the same-sex kiss being the first in franchise history, and all I could think was that didn't a couple of chicks do it in Deep Space 9?

My enjoyment of the new Star Wars films is deeply undercut by the fact that Adam Driver just doesn't work for me as an actor. Well, maybe he would in some other role (I've only seen him in the SW flicks) but he fails to convey any menace or threat as an antagonist when I'm watching him.
Quote:

I'll take your word on it but it still sounds significant. F/F stuff gets less push back ('cause chicks doing it are hot and I can jerk off to it) than M/M stuff (cause guys doing it are gross and a threat to my masculinity). I don't think the two pairings are socially equivalent.

Hulu's The Runaways has been renewed for a second season. I haven't watched it yet, because I've been waiting for the last episode (which is today) and was going to binge it, but I've heard good things about it and the reactions to the news seem to be that it deserves another season.

Zachary Levi says DC's Shazam is going to be "Superman meets Big," which is what it should be. I mean, ultimately it's just lip service until the movie is out, but it's the right words. He also says he'd like to have Wonder Woman show up because he feels it'd be funny for this supermanchild being awkward around the Amazonian beauty would be funny. All I can think was "That scene wasn't really that funny in Justice League."

Jumanji has made more domestically than both Logan and Justice League. I get Logan, since it's R rated and Americans seem to have a problem with swearing and blood, though less people actually died in Logan than several PG-13 movies like Thor, but whatever. Feel bad about Justice League though.

ABC President Channing Dungey is trying to make it sound like The Inhumans has a chance in hell of being renewed for a second season. There's some elements that didn't work, but with some effort could make the show better, but the elements that simply didn't work were bad enough that I don't think it deserves that chance. Better to start over, or just wait the 18 months and use the X-Men.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies trailer. It's exactly what one would expect.
