Aside from the setup, Log Horizon has very little in common with SAO. It'd be equivalent to throw Ixion Saga or .hack at him.

SAO takes place in an MMORPG that is entirely indistinguishable from a generic fantasy setting, and log horizon takes place in a fantasy setting that is indistinguishable from a generic MMORPG. I think that's basically what seals it for me. Log Horizon is the only one of the four that makes significant use of the MMORPG plot device. The other three are merely fantasy worlds painted up as a game. ...Also SAO is pretty terribly written, in the realm of katekayo hitman reborn levels of bad writing and not nearly as entertaining. It's been said before, but it really can't be said enough.

And now I'm remembering how peeved I am that Ixion Saga wasn't entirely about collecting phat loots. Rocket sword, gator boots, that show was going places! But instead it went creepy, weird places.

Such... lateral potential.

I'm fine with where it went, but he really should have kept the dragon pimp boots.

Question for you two: have you read any of the manhwa "The Gamer"? It's pretty entertaining, and very much about leveling up and collecting loot so far. New releases each Friday! Smiley: grin

If we're talking about manhwas, then you need to read "Tower of God".

God damn it. Thanks to you I just spent the past couple of hours reading that...

It's pretty good though. Jee-Han's powers are crazily OP but it never really feels cheap because it's mostly about the grinding and leveling.

This just in: I've discovered that there's actually a sequel series to Aquarion. This must be what it's like for tweeny-boppers when a new Twilight movie comes out.

AQUARIOOOOOOONNNNNN!!

Fall. New Chaika. Shocking Truth!

Looks like there is a Ghibli series(?) too.

Various clearly fetish related shows.

KLK special, Attack on Titan Prequel.

Full list out? Time for a new thread? Also, add Log Horizon. Supposed to be the next season starting up.

Parasyte could be great if they keep it as violent and gory as the manga. Still can't believe it took this long to get an anime. The series is 20 years old.

Also, Log Horizon!

If it's anything like Tokyo Ghoul there'll be convenient black shadows everywhere.

But it's so corny and bad, it's amazing. Like Scandal or Vin Diesel movies.

I've finally gotten around to watching Log Horizon. 6 eps in and it's pretty good, but so far I'm not seeing what makes it "better than SAO in every way" like most people seem to claim. I'm assuming I'll get around to that in time.

People assume that if it's an anime based on MMOs it's going to be the "if you die in the game you die in real life" song and dance. Log Horizon sort of subverts that trope by making the main characters nigh-immortal. The source of tension is from the fact that 1) they are currently trapped in the game/world with no way to escape and 2) if they die they lose memories of the original world, most likely leading to their complete assimilation into the game/world.

IMO the whole appeal to the show is the thought "What would you do if the game/world is now your permanent home".

What was losing me in the beginning was the whole "MUAHAHAHA THE BAD PLAYERS ARE TERRORIZING THE POPULACE!"

I mean, people already knew that dying didn't mean anything, and they didn't yet know the thing about memories.

I get the stress of suddenly being in this new world. But that part lost me. Particularly because they used it to drive the first mini arc, by sending the group to that foreign city.

They had to show that while death wasn't an absolute, torture and forced imprisonment was still a problem. The Mini-Arc was just a character build-up for Shiro, and set the story foundation for the creation of Log Horizon and the Round Table Conference.

They even go as far as to make kidnapping a crime worse than murder, since the latter isn't permanent.
