I'm curious where this line that Puerto Rico is being ignored is coming from? Disaster has been declared, thousands of people there working, helicopters and various vertical takeoff/land cargo planes moving supplies, Army Corps of Engineers there working to restore power.

Mainly that 45 isn't planning on asking Congress for increased emergency relief funding for PR until "the first or second week of October". I don't know if he thinks delaying that will help repeal the ACA or what.

I don't know about ignoring, but he's certainly made it a point to talk about Puerto Rico's debt. Which, I guess the right time to talk about is right after two hurricanes cripple a territory. You know, when you find time in between using your government podium to tell people what they can, and cannot, say and do.

Trump says it's hard because Puerto Rico is "in the middle of a very big ocean" which leads me to suspect that he may be accidentally sending aid efforts to Hawaii.

Canada is thinking of aligning with NK since USA won't launch a nuke in its backyard at us, but NK might and USA won't defend us with their missile defense. You know, the missile defense that Canada was offered to help finance but refused to? That one.

If on the off-chance anyone did launch a nuke at Canada it's only because they were launched at every target in the world so missile defense would be useless.

I would think the big danger would be a misfire, since NK can't hit the ocean about half the time.

If you're a Puerto Rican, I hope you like it there or have your own boat, cause getting off the devastated island is gonna cost ya.
The Hill wrote:
The Trump administration is reportedly forcing evacuees from Puerto Rico to sign promissory notes ensuring full repayment for transportation costs and is keeping evacuees' passports as collateral.

MarketWatch reported on Thursday that the State Department is using a longstanding but discretionary policy to ensure that evacuees pay transportation costs, which are based on “the price of the last commercial one-way, full-fare (not discounted) economy ticket prior to the crisis.”

Passports won't be returned to evacuees until payment is received, according to the news outlet, which cited the State Department's website.

Honestly, I would think that "Helping American citizens evacuate from disaster zones" would be something most people would say "Yeah, that's a legitimate role that our government should be spending tax money on". Especially when said zone is an island so it's not as though you can just drive or hop a bus to get away.

I guess that'd be one way to make them pay for the "billions of dollars" in debt to "Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with."

Also of note: We have a president who has spent more time and energy condemning people who peacefully protest by kneeling during a song than he has Alt-Right terrorist who murdered a woman.

If someone was murdering a woman every week on national TV, you'd have a better comparison. One time event gets a one time condemnation. Something happening every week, by the same people, for the same reason? Different response.

Quote:
But, you know, the problem is REALLY all about how people aren't protesting the "right way".

Honestly, the whole "display of protest during the national anthem" bit isn't so much about protest as it is about speech. I have no problem with someone choosing to do that, on their own time, and with their own microphone (so to speak). The issue here is that the moment they put on those uniforms, they aren't just speaking for themselves, but for their teams, and the NFL, and every sponsor, and the networks, and every advertiser, every merchandiser of their gear, every retailer of said merchandise, etc, etc, etc.

Obviously, they're doing so for exactly that reason (greater visibility and all that). But it's also for that reason that it falls to the league, networks, teams, etc to police the actions of their representatives (which is what the team members are when they're doing this). I don't think that calling on those organizations to do something about it is out of line. Every team member signs contracts that have clauses about how they represent the team, league, etc, and can be fined, suspended, and fired for taking an action which portrays those organizations badly. And no matter what your feelings on the cause they are protesting about, disrespecting the flag of the nation they are playing in, definitely qualifies. It isn't about how they personally feel about the US, it's laws, etc. It's about respect for the nation you are playing in. When US players play in Canada, or the UK, despite not being citizens of those nations, you still stand and be respectful when those nations anthems are played at the start of a sporting event.

You aren't required to salute, but you should at least be respectful. These actions they are taking are designed to be specifically disrespectful. That's the whole point. But it's also why they are wrong to do so. And yeah, I happen to be of the mindset that every player who does this should be suspended by the league. Period. Playing in the NFL is a privilege. There's a dozen players who'd gladly step into every one of those players shoes and play if they had the opportunity. At the end of the day, it'll come down to how upset the fans/viewers are about this, but if the current mood I've seen is any indication, there are a lot of fans who are fed up with the players doing this. I don't know if it's reached the point of "boycotting the games, cancelling season tickets, refusing to buy merchandise" level, but I would not be surprised if it reaches that point pretty soon.

Trump's nothing if not consistent. He's ratcheting up the rhetoric in an "us versus them" way. Not sure if that's the right approach (it's basically a page out of the liberal playbook, but as I've pointed out many times before, Trump is basically using liberal tactics to push a conservative agenda), but I think that the players who are protesting are thinking that as long as they keep things to a dull roar, they get their protest and they get to keep playing. Trump is upping the ante. And I think that if you make the fight about "players who want to protest" versus "fans who don't want to pay to see players who protest", and eliminate the middle ground, the players will lose. Big time. At the end of the day, it's the fans who fund the game, not the players. They get to say what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

I think what he is saying is we need to murder a football team every week for awareness. 2 teams enter, one team leaves.

This is the only way to stop the systemic violence.

Which pretty much everyone in that line agrees and stands with the players, but let's not let details get in the way of repeating what you read on a blog.Â

If they're speaking for their teams then let their teams deal with it. The NFL doesn't need you having conniption fits on their behalf. They're all big boys who can handle their own companies.

I do love the whole "There's lots of other guys who'd take their job!" bit though. Sure there are. But that doesn't mean that the teams want those guys in the job which is why they pay their current guys millions and millions of dollars to work for them. If they were easily replaceable with people of equivalent skill then they'd be paying them like fast food managers.

I hate how it seems that the media helps legitimize the whole "Fake News" narrative from Trump.

"Trump denies water shipments to Puerto Rico". Cause at the time of the headline, someone in the administration questioned whether or not waiving this "Jones Act" would actually help, since the problem wasn't lack of ships, it was lack of ports able to unload and move the supplies. The next day the same news sources publish articles about how there are 9500 shipping containers at Puerto Rico ports waiting to be unloaded and distributed. Purposefully misleading click bait article titles because they know people won't read articles, they'll just read headlines. Corrections later mean nothing because everyone runs with the first thing they read and want to believe.

The articles about Clinton's response to Trump's response to Puerto Rico, which leave the reader with the impression that nothing was being done, users here claiming "ignored". When things were being done for the week before Clinton made her remarks.

Then there was the "Trump repeats lies about Senator hospitalized". He's not hospitalized, he's out now and stuck at home recovering.

There seems to be a more subtle "Fake News" when compared to these Russian fueled lies. Ones that are just sensationalized headlines that they know will be the only things read that lead people in a purposeful direction that is not nearly as "bad" as the headline would suggestion. Maybe more likely done in an effort to be the first and foremost to get the bad guy in that next big mistake, than in an effort to actually mislead. But they mislead none the less as real info in articles are never actually read and later corrected headlines or articles are ignored.

Well, it really shouldn't have been a question. If anyone in the administration were even an average businessman they'd recognize that waiving the Jones Act, even as just a token gesture, would be nothing but beneficial to their public image.

"We're not waiving the Jones Act because of damaged ports" and "We're waiving the Jones Act, but the damaged ports make delivery difficult" are pretty much the exact same thing, but one looks better than the other.

I was working off the idea that the guidance system just sucked and came at us by mistake. The only thing here worthwhile invading for is natural resources and you can't pillage them when they're radioactive.

During some Trump stuff about why healthcare bill failed.

Thad Cochran, R-Miss. (according to Google).
Who says he's returning to DC on Oct 16 (also according to that same Google hit).

I'm not going to pretend to care about the man. Or know anything about him or his voting habits (But, R-Miss, probably no surprises to be had if you look him up). Nor do I care whether he was or was not able to vote while he was out of office for his recovery. Nor do I think if he wasn't able to vote (which, I kind of doubt it, people vote absentee in Congress right? I remember hearing about how people vote for other senators all the time on the floor) that somehow that was the reason why the bill failed.

The point is about the choice in headlines and such for news outlets making it easy for this "Fake News" narrative to exist.

I dunno, Cochran tweeted that he was NOT in the hospital, but was at home. So maybe Trump meant "out sick", and maybe he should learn to be a little more specific.

The fake news narrative exists because 45 wants it to exist. He fears and hates the media, and his first instinct is to foment chaos and profit from the result. None of this is mysterious in the least.
