I've never met a member of PETA. Even at college the activists were boring. The only thing ever done was gay pride stuff.
At my college I dressed up like a pirate and preached to students walking by. They seemed to enjoy learning about the Flying Spaghetti Monster more than being told they were burning in hell for the previous weekend, as the pro-Christ preacher on the other corner yelled at them.

I support peta. Happier, properly fed cows produce better milk and steaks.
I support proper treatment for animals, even ones we eat. But I would NEVER support PETA, because they are badsh*t crazy in a lot of their activities, and hypocritical in most of their actions. I remember reading that something like 90% of the dogs that PETA "saves" were actually just killed and dumped into the garbage by the organization.
Let me find a link... ah, here we go:

The Center for Consumer Freedom, which represents the food industry, a frequent target of PETA campaigns, released data filed by PETA with the state of Virginia that shows PETA has killed more than 10,000 animals from 1998 to 2003. "In 2003, PETA euthanized over 85 percent of the animals it took in," said a press release from the lobby, "finding adoptive homes for just 14 percent. By comparison, the Norfolk (Va.) SPCA found adoptive homes for 73 percent of its animals and Virginia Beach SPCA adopted out 66 percent."
