I dedicate this story to those who requested it from me. For those of you not familiar with the "OB", you are about to get a crash course. This group of ladies are chronically overworked, underpaid, and that is mostly because they tend to mess things up even when getting the desired restult. ^^;;

This story is the first in an ongoing series about the Opaline Brigade. Please enjoy it and if you see any of the ladies around, say hello to them. All three are wonderful people with whom I am happy to work.

ROCKIN' IT, OPALINE BRIGADE STYLE

CRITERIA:
Requested by: Yekan
Subject(s): The Opaline Brigade (Yekan, Awias, Eleusynia)
Genre: Comedy/Action
Setting: Valkurm Dunes & Selbina (chosen by me)

*****

Sand flew up with each step. Six feet were running through the sand, kicking up pufts of grit.

"Heels are so not meant for this," protested Awias. She stopped to empty a white boot. As she did, her body was pummeled with water. Following in hot pursuit was what seemed to be an animated piece of black cloth, a bedsheet floating consciously on the wind. A really pissed off bedsheet.

Yekan turned around and murmured a few words. Awias was encased in purple light and sparkles that healed her wounds. Next up would be a spell attempting to banish the bogy back to the lands of the dead. As she did, Eleusynia summoned raw elemental magic to her fingertips.

"Burn," she said and engufed the floating figure in flames. Magic bursts volleyed back and forth. Sand either was blown away or melted to glass under the intense castings. Using the last of her strength, Eleusynia let a stone spell fly. With a groan, the bogy relented and collapsed.

"You're fired," said the black mage smugly.

"Uh, Ele," started Yekan, "that was earth magic you just used."

"Oh. Um...'I guess that's what happens when you get stoned'?"

Yekan rolled her eyes. With the grace and tact any woman should possess, Awias had already started picking through the remains of the damned soul that attacked them. "Hey guys, think this would look good on me?" She draped a lumincloth around her body. Yekan and Eleusynia looked at each other and sighed dejectedly.

"C'mon, we need to reach Selbina by sunrise or we'll bake alive out here!" The two blonde ponytails nodded to the black's suggestion.

"Opaline Brigade, move out!" With her first step, Awias tripped over herself and caught a face full of sand.

Later, in Selbina...

"Where in Promathia's Realm are those girls?" The Mayor was fuming, "They should of been here hours ago! Humph, 'professionals' indeed."

The Mayor of Selbina motioned angrily to the map he always looks at for comfort. Almost on cue he heard the Galkan guard outside give protest then a small yelp. He turned around to see three women confidently stride in...behind them his guard was rubbing his shin in pain.

In order, Yekan started the intro followed by Eleusyina and Awias.

"Here we are!"

"Here we be!"

"Here for you are the Mage-nificent Three!"

"We'll fix your problems."

"Or break your heart."

"All for a small sum of gil from which you must part."

"We'll do a mundane task."

"Or plan a cunning raid."

"Let's all hear it for the..."

"OPALINE BRIGADE!"

All three women cheered after saying their name in an unnecessarily joyous fashion. The mayor in response to the introduction simply sighed and doubleguessed his judgement.

"Ladies, please, I'm an old man and I don't have patience for stuff like this any more. You are here because a reliable source told me you all do a good job at, he took out a piece of paper, 'mundane tasks and cunning raids...'," his voice trailed off at the realization. All three women nodded in unison. He slapped his own face, but the mayor continued on, "Ladies, I have for you a request."

"What is it, Mr. Mayor," Awias questioned, "Is there fun and danger involved?"

Eleusynia chuckled at Awias, "There always is, silly! Where the Opaline Brigade goes, fun and danger follow!" The black-haired black mage saluted.

"What do you need us to do," inquired Yekan.

"I need you ladies to finish up a quest I sent another person on but failed to complete. I sent a man named Shard to collect monument impressions for me, but he skipped out of completing them after I gave him a map to the Crawler's Nest in gratitude. All's that's left is one more clay impression that I need made to complete my collection."

"Sounds easy enough," replied Yekan, "Where do you need us to go?"

"It is right here in the Dunes. Somewhere."

Awias had since been distracted by watching motes of dust float around the room, but Eleusynia spoke up.

"This is a pretty big place to just go prancing about looking to press some clay into a piece of rock!"

"Oh? So the 'Mage-nificent Three' can't do it? And here you came highly recommended." It felt good to dump some of the grief he received from the women back on them.

Awias snapped out of her daze and shouted, "We'll do it! Wait, what now?"

The mayor walked over and shook her hand. "Good, thank you girls. I will pay you some money when you get back after doing the job."

"Okies," the blonder of the two blondes unquestioningly accepted.

After three days of roaming the desert and beach, being shot at by goblins, being stung by Damselflies, being chased by undead, and pinched by crabs, the Opaline Brigade finds a cave after negotiating their way though a clump of mangrove trees. For the three this would of been hard enough during the day, but at night it took extra precaution (and heal spells) to navigate the otherwise harmless fauna.

- - - - -

"Look," yelped Yekan, "is that it?!" The three women rushed to the back of the cave and found a monument inside.

"I think it is," said Eleusynia.

"'Bout damn time too," humphed Awias, "now let's smush this clay against the stone and let's go!" As Awias was mashing the clay into the ancient scripture a bat divebombed the group. A communal "Eek!" issued from the mouth of the cave. In a panic over the small avian mammal, the three women began unloading all they had. Fire spells, holy magic, and Shiva herself all were implimented to rid themselves of the vermin.

As the near-hapless bat lay twitching on the ground, the Opaline Brigade surrounded it and looked down with proud smiles. "Ha! Take THAT, bat!" Eleusyina's boast was interrupted by some pebbles falling on her head. "Hey, what the...?"

Yekan shouted, "Cave in, get out now!"

As rocks started tumbling Awias reached in and grabbed the clay. The Mage-nificent Three ran as fast as they could to escape what may become their earthen tomb. As they emerged a final rumble and whoosh of dust was exhaled out the mouth of the cave. Panting and shaken, they nervously laughed at the completion of their assignment. They all burst out laughing after a minute. Awias was the first to stop and turned pale, even for being in moonlight. "Uh guys..."

"Yea?"

Awias pointed to the bogy that had materialized behind them. "RUUUUUUN!"

Exhausted, the women staggered into the mayor's house and threw the clay on the table. "Ah wonderful," the mayor rejoiced, "my collection is complete! Here's some money for your efforts." The mayor gave the three a total of one thousand gil. Too bruised to complain, the white armor-clad women snatched up the coin purse and left the dunes for what they hope would be forever.

A few days later, back at the Opaline Brigade Mercenary & Temp Services headquarters in Jeuno...

- - - - -

Yekan sat reclined in her chair and began reading the latest edition of the Tarutaru Times. The headlines read "Massive Quake Levels Darogaroga's Spine: Collapse of Millenia Old Historic Landmark Attributed to Mystery Cave-In in the Dunes".

Yekan quietly folded the paper, threw it in the fire, and went to bed.
