A day of days. Grilled cheese. 10k and you.Follow

#1 Jan 21 2014 at 6:25 PM Rating: Excellent
Hey frens,

Some of you remember me, most don't. (Reminder, way too much Lebowski and a race to 10k with Thumbalina that ended with her winning, some 2(?) years ago). And much like Barkingturtle, I'm really only here for that insufferable title and to spam you for some damn cash.

Starting in April, come hell or high water, I'm launching a premium grilled cheese cart here in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. It's kind of a thing that's grwing in popularity, despite the city's objections. So here's what we're up to:

Over at Melts Without Borders we have our full (but tentative) menu up. We also, depending on capital, plan to offer soups and homemade sodas (or pops for you weird *****) and we've got jobs lined up already. We plan to hit farmer's markets, local breweries, area festivals, and the mother of al summer events, Ragbrai, which is a state wide bicycle ride. Should be intense.

Naturally, this is where the pitch comes in. We need your help. Every dollar counts for us and I've already sunk a considerable amount in. We're almost there and you can get us closer than ever. Help a poor ole cheese slinger out.

And if you can't donate, that's cool too. Don't wheeze the cheese, share the link.

And yes, despite what my post count says, this IS my 10,000 post. So get with the title, friend-o.

Gratz on your nine thousand nine hundred and ninety fourth post.

Also, will you play Primus' Sailing The Seas Of Cheese album to announce your arrival like an icecream van plays it's bells or whatever.

Get someone that vaguely looks like Elmer Fudd. His grilled cheese song is the stuff of legends.

The picture of the ham or bacon or whatever it is on the grimy cooking sheet isn't very appetizing.

Good luck with the cart. Seems like a good, less risky, way to go for a restaurant if you can get it all permitted. A cart in Iowa should sell corn stuff though - I'd put arepas on the menu - the ones with mozzarella cheese in them. They're just like a grilled cheese, only tastier.

Happy birthday or congrats on post ding...Smiley: confused

I'm confident you thoroughly researched the grilled cheese market in Iowa.

I only saw three grilled cheese sandwiches on that menu, and I was being generous. Anything other than cheese between the breads invalidates it. That said, most of those sound like really good sandwiches.

I had never thought of a King's Hawaiian grilled cheese, but now it's something I'm going to have to make here at home.

I wish you the best of luck. The grilled cheese food truck here in Nashville is by far my favorite food truck and one of the most popular in the city, so there's definitely precedent for a successful grilled cheese-based business!

How did I not know of this. Next time I'm in nashville I'm definitely checking this out. I was there all the time last year.

That's uncooked, home-cured canadian bacon.

Hence our name being "Melts Without Borders". Emphasis on the Melt.

Never understood those pure cheese sandwiches. Like a hot dog without the sausage.

Grats on the ding and the cheese cart, though.
