How?

It seems like the spammer is testing the waters, first creating some hello posts and finding out they didn't get banned/nuked, now a hello post with a non threatening link in the sig. I'm guessing the next step is a hello post with a spam link in the sig.

And it might be that. but given some of the hoops they went through on the signup and the proxy, etc. it might be something else. We'll see. They always slip up in the end.

Google? They're trying to steal your information so they can bombard you with personalized and deliciously tempting spam. It doesn't get much worse than that.

Not for long! At least here, hopefully, maybe. The way Google collects data from it's users is illegal in the Netherlands (and possibly more and larger European countries) and since Google producs are almost impossible to avoid the Dutch government is looking into what they can do about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the EU forces Google to change it's ways in a few years.

Should force them all to wear the funny looking glasses as punishment.

But barring that hopefully you all can get them to do something different with the data coming from your country at least.

In the event that they are forced to change their practices in the EU; they'll probably create a cluster of servers specifically for that region, and it's rules and block connection access to the standard servers.

Possibly, I think at least Microsoft changed the way they handled internet explorer on windows for the entire world in one go after they got the €500,000,000 fine by the EU. Google might do the same if they expect other places to follow suit when and if they get fined by the EU.

Nope, they created a version of Windows specifically for the EU with Internet Explorer not installed by default. The US and main worldwide versions of the software still has IE installed by default, and you can disable it but not uninstall it.

Huh, I figured they'd just change it everywhere (or at least in the US) before other countries would get all fine-happy and they'd have to pay up another few hundred million.

Think about this.

Would anyone ever make their first legitimate post on a zam forum in the OoT?

Maybe. I'm not sure how busy the game forums are now since I never go to them, but the OOT is somewhat busy. Someone who has used the database services and finds the forums might make their first post here, where there is actually a community. Plus, it is not necessarily clear to new users that the OOT is a global OOT forum, and not just a game-specific OOT forum.

I mean, it's not likely, but with the ZAM network being what it is right now, I could see it happening.

I doubt that they'd be saying it's nice to meet us all though, and hope we'll get in touch. If anything you'd think they'd start with a string of swear words and we'd spend most of the next year assuming they were someone's sock.

I wonder if it's a new defense with sigs on low-count posters? Links just turn to google?

Because I'd be 100% on board with that.

I'm pretty sure the link to google is just the spammer testing what they can get away with/if there's any anti spam systems and what triggers them.

There are some location based anti link things that kick in for certain new posters. but they trigger only under specific circumstances
