Is it Ask an Admin Day 2013? I think it is!Follow

1. How much wood could a wood chipper chip if a wood chipper couldn't chip wood?
2. Realistically, how many "work hours" per week does being an admin result in?

Also, will I ever make sage?

Didn't call it ahead of time, doesn't count.

Cell phone posting still, so looking to see if something was asked isn't an option. Most interesting act of admining for the year, full story, go. That's kind of a question.

Are you considering allowing users to rate a user a different direction if, at a later time, they say something that clarifies their previous post and you realize you just rated them down for nothing?

Will you be doing away with the archaic karma system's up vote/down vote in favor of a likes/dislikes system where anonymity isn't an issue? Even SE's main forum does it now. Once someone is at sub-default or excellent, you have no idea if they are still getting rated up or down. In fact, when I see excellent posts, I just leave them alone because, barring new posters, they aren't going to see a visible change in my rate up so why would I waste the time rating them up?

Do you plan on merging the class and job forums in the FF14 section like many of us have suggested/asked for? There is little to no activity on almost all of them anyways: discussion largely takes place in General.

Do you plan on adding any other perks to premium? Right now, all I'd gain is the ability to change my avatar to a custom image (something most forums offer for free)? Everything else is superfluous. Would love to contribute because I spend a lot of time here but paying money for a pretty picture doesn't cut it for many.

Nope
Nuh-uh
That could potentially happen, but we're seeing if traffic picks up again after christmas break and then see which direction things go.
If someone comes up with a good one, sure!

You could.. I dunno.. enable karma numbers for premium users.

But only do that if you want to see an abnormal spike in premium memberships or something silly like that.

None, because it's apperently broken? but is it still a wood chipper at that point? I doubt it would be very happy to be broken, even if it was made of wood to begin with. Not really chipper anyways.

It varies. It's a part time job to begin with, and hours got cut by about 60%. Probably around 15-20 hours a week for the forum stuff. Probably more for the content managers I would imagine. Thats on top of the full time jobs most of us work elsewhere. Then there are some idiots like me that run a computer repair buisiness on the side too.

At this point, it would probably take admin intervention, or another 10,000 rate ups to move your karma to sage or above.

Most fun one this year was when gourdraiden came back briefly, but then decided to take the fight to a different forum. Outside the forum, outside the rules. and the restrictions. So the gloves got to come off. Then a bunch of other admins from all the other FFXI forums joined in with their own grudges. it was hilarious!

I was never the one that wanted the numbers gone in the first place. Illia and Pikko were the ones that wanted them gone the most origionally. I argued against it. Did they cause drama? sure. Did people complain about karma more? absaolutly. was there more ratebots? no doubt. but, the karma system gave people that excuse they needed to come back and see how their posts and their account overall was doing, and increased posting. We started losing people right after they took the numbers away, but there is still a persistant fear that if we put the numbers back everythign will decend into anarchy and doom all mankind or something.

I don't think adding the numbers back would be a magic "instantly get thousands more people to post" button, but it wouldn't hurt.

If there's one constant among internet forums everywhere, it's that they feed on drama. It's a forum's "dark energy".

Also, do Varus or Proof ever still make socks and just get banned before being able to post?

What's the likelihood of an OOT/Asylum merger in the near future?

Also, how much drama exactly would that cause?

Not sure if this was ever asked, but...

Will Zam ever break into other content venues across the board? I know there were a few false starts on video series that, well, I don't even know what happened to them. And I know you post some video content. What I mean is producing interactive content. For instance, there was the Extra Life charity drive recently. I know there was nothing official for FFXIV, but was there anything done for another of the forum groups? Will Zam ever field a group for it? What about live streaming events? I know one of the admins in the FFXIV boards did one for the game when they were able to.

If not, would Zam ever consider partnering with someone already in the video-producing market (some place like Machinima, for example)? I ask because I think that's one very important reason Zam's traffic is falling off. Forums by themselves are great, but having personalities like Syndicate made Machinima the juggernaut it is today, even if upper management is effectively killing it off right now. Look at Pikko. She hasn't been an active admin for a couple years now, and yet people still ask after her. Having a face to the site really helps make it more appealing to stick around.

I know we did have a fairly good podcast going for a bit in FFXI, just wondering if Zam will hop onboard for the video/streaming video culture now in gaming.

Don't get me wrong, it's very popular, but is it a MMO? there aren't really quests or a set database, so it's hard to tie it into the main archatexture as well as the others are. That and it never really got much traffic so its not been a priority.

Its not really an MMO, no. I feel that if it weren't buried the way it is and had more of a chance it could generate more traffic.

I notice quite a few people manage to find the forum through search engines, but do not see anything to stick around for. I look at sites like Planet Minecraft, which pull massive amounts of traffic-- often more than they can handle, and wonder why Zam can't do the same kind of thing. It might be slow at first, but I can definitely see a small section dedicated to Minecraft eventually becoming a hit if it is played out right. I'd be more than willing to help, if needed.

I don't play minecraft, but my brother and his wife (in early thirties) both do. So do most of the grade 4-8 kids at the school I work at. The game is bigger than the other games I come to Zam to read about. I'm really starting to think minecraft is going to:

1. grow a splinter population that is an mmo
2. evolve outright into an mmo
3. spew a sequel "World Of Minecraft"... that takes over the gaming universe... unless things like EQnextlandmark (and whatever Blizzard is working on) beat it to the punch. (course, if I was blizzard I would have merged up with them already).

Which is my roundabout way of saying: promote the minecraft forum to real status. From a sight management perspective I'd see it as a penny stock that might just pay out huge.

This may only apply to the really old forums...

Really old posts in the EQ forums (going back to the anon days) you can still rate up/down.

Recent posts you can (of course) rate

There is this window of time, that if a post falls into... you can't rate it.

1. What is that window?

2. Are the reasons it was implemented still necessary?

We already did merge a bunch of them. More of them will probably be done whenever the FXIV ones also get looked at. It isn't an easy process the way the forum is set up.

Varus yes, Proof no, and you had around 11 sockpuppets. I still don't know how you didn't get permabanned.

I still toy with it from time to time, but most of the OOTers already are posting in Asylum.

I don't have a good answer for that. They have tried things along those lines in the pst that for whatever reason have not worked out well. The main focus at the moment seems to be growing the social media integration for everything. once that is done I suspect alternatives will be looked at, but I really don't know.

The window was supposed to be basically any post older than around 3 months. the reason really really old posts are still sometimes rateable is that those posts actually used a different karma table and method to calculate. Admins don't have the time limiter so I'm not sure of the exact range.

The reason it was implemented was ratebots. People would make a sockpuppet, get it above scholar, then go find all of their really old posts and rate every single one of them up. They would make additional ratebots as needed. Not realizing that the rates on account and by account tools don't show rates on posts, but just a linear history of who rated when. By going with the older posts though they were less likely to be discovered. So, we made the older ones inaccessable. It still happens from time to time, and it is still necessary.

No. By the time i got them moved by a dev you would have posted that many times anyways. and if I can't have them, you can't either!
I regret Nothing! Eh, but seriously most of my regrets in hindsight are not removing certain individuals sooner than I did. That or certain things that played out during the China purchae. Forum splits overall haven't been my decision, and alot of them made sense at the time. Besides the TV and book forum predates almost everything except the origional everquest forum itself. The TV part was added to it later. Overall though I don't have many things I regret from the forum. I know some people would disagree on that point, but I also know what the alternatives to some of the bans would have been, and you don't want to post in a forum where the mods have lost all authority. Things escalate quickly.
