The true test is .. will you remember the film in a few years time?
The problem I have had with so many series to film converts or spin offs is the insta-forgettability of them.

Now this may be a silly question considering its Star Trek and many people grew up with it. Would someone unfamiliar with the genre be able to leap in and understand the story?

Also, Spock is hot, thats why I'm off to see it Smiley: nod
One of my friends who had went to the movie with me didn't know the difference between the Bord and a Vulcan, and he still enjoyed the movie. I also went with a ditsy 20 year old alcoholic who enjoyed the movie. I went to the movie with a 49 year old welder who enjoyed the movie. I went to the movie with a 47 year old software engineer who enjoyed the movie. I went to the movie with my 12 year old sister, she also enjoyed the movie.

Two questions.

1)What is a Bord?

2)Assuming the ditzy 20 year old alcoholic who enjoyed the movie wasn't related to you, did you enjoy the ditsy 20 year old alcoholic after the movie?

Smiley: laugh YOUR MOM IS A BORD.

She's my friend, and she's out of my league. I've also known her boyfriend for well over a year.

Alternate timeline, so the past storyline has been discarded to make room for a bunch of new movies and crappy Enterprise-like TV series.

I think I've seen all her films...

Star Trek was pretty good. In a "new action flick" kinda way. It is *not* a traditional Trek film though. I'm not sure I was thrilled with the visuals, but then I've never been one for the current technique of putting blur and absurd action movement combined with camera motions (even when CGI!) in order to make things look "fast". You end up not being able to see anything. Unfortunately, that's the trend, so I guess I'll deal with it (harumph!).

The plot was "OK". As a couple people mentioned, this is essentially an alternate timeline, so while the broad events and people are the same, the events surrounding them are different. That way they could write stuff and not worry about the fanbase pulling out obscure references and quibbling about continuity. Of course, that also means that nothing is "real" in the sense of the history of Trek, so if you were looking for a story detailing the early events of the original crew, you're not getting it in this film.

Dunno. It was worth the price of admission, especially since I went with a group of friends. But I wouldn't qualify it as the "best" Trek film, or even in the top 4 or 5.

I had a mini-guillotine surgically placed in my sphincter just in case I was ever sent to prison; I'm currently saving up for stainless steel teeth.

Insurection and Nemesis could have just been regular episodes. Really, just not that good. My favorite ST movie is VI (Undiscovered Country). having said that, the best quotes come fron II and IV.
