A question for the computer builders out there...Follow

Hey all. I'm trying to build a new computer using a next-gen video card (GeForce 6800). None of my existing computers had an available AGP slot so I've had to purchase a new motherboard (...and processor, and power supply, and tower, etc. I don't look forward to the credit card bill.) Well, I've got it all hooked up now and can't seem to get it to work. It's weird, I turned it on and nothing happened but while troubleshooting I noticed that if I unplugged the main power supply to the motherboard and then plugged it back in, all the LEDs and fans kick on for a second. My first impression is that there is a short in the system, but I'm curious if anyone else has experienced a similar problem before, and if so, what the remedy was. Any help would be appreciated.

AMD Athlon 3500 64-bit Processor
K8 Motherboard for a 939 socket
500-Watt Power Supply in an ATX Form Tower
BFG nVidia GeForce 6800-GT 256 MB Video Card
Assorted Drives and Hard Disks that are pretty irrelevant to the issue

I'm gonna post this on a couple of different forums to broaden my chances of finding someone who knows the answer before I gotta pay someone to keep me from throwing this sucker out the window.

Ok, you'll prolly get more responses in the tech support forum, but I'll toss out a few possibilities:

1. The power switch isn't hooked up to the motherboard properly (or at all).

2. Faulty motherboard, power switch, or power supply.

3. Power cord not plugged up to PC properly. A loose power cord can look like it's plugged up good until you touch it and it falls to the floor. Sounds dumb, but check it.

Usually if you don't ground a motherboard properly, it still works, but just acts quirky (resets bios, reboots randomly, etc.) I found that out the hard way the first time I built a PC.

Be 100% sure you've got your heat sink and cooling fan mounted properly on your CPU as well. These days you can fry a processor in literal seconds if you don't have your cooling in place and operational when you fire off a PC.

Look at the above possibilities first. It sounds like you may not be the most experienced builder in the world, but it's not that bad once you've got the routine down.

I uh... don't see any RAM in that list. maybe?

K, cool, good possibilities. Looks like I've got a long day of troubleshooting ahead of me. Oh, and,

1.028 GB Ram

Thanx all. Any more suggestions, keep 'em coming.

i'm more surprised by how long you've been running PCs without AGP slots.

unless you meant, the PCs you have don't have a free AGP slot bc of course, you're already using it for another AGP vid card that you were wanting to replace. but if that's the case, you could have just removed it for the new one..so i have to go with the first option that none of your PCs had AGP.

My guess is you have a short that affected only parts of mother boards.

Friend of mine has a mother board that works fine, unless you need to do a clean install on the hardrive. The bios won't work without a working copy of windows or linux already on a hard drive.

I had a mother board that worked fine, except one ram slot, acted as if anything I put in there didn't exist.

Assuming everything is connected properly, no grounding problems, etc --

Faulty power supply, mobo, or CPU.

I had a similar problem when I built my pc. If it turns on then off right away, it may very well be a powersupply issue. I blew my crappy powersupply before my computer could POST. Also, being a 64-bit processor, it requires ECC ram. Do you have it? I am running the FX-51 and after a good month or so of trouble shooting, I took it to a comp store only to find out I had the wrong RAM type. I felt like a tool. Are you able to get it to run longer than just a second? Do you get any bios error beeps from your motherboard? Building a compatible PC is an art. Something I learned the hard way.
