OK, I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong here. I read the guides, I was going to watch the video but the site was down.

I had:

Blink Band
Noble Ribbon.
Bird Whistle
Opo-Opo Necklace
Cerment Sword +1
Elegant Sheild
Earth Staff
Life Belt
Gleeman's Belt
Melody Earringsx2
Moon Ringsx2
BRD AF in other slots
Hamelin Flute
Harp +1
Horn +1

Basically a Melee set and a usual BRD set.

Forgot to use my Tavnazian Taco. AH only had two sleeping potions, so I bought them and the Icarus wing. What a waste of 20k the wing was, only 50 TP from it.

Anyway, when I got in, Maat was etuding himself. I put on the necklace and slept up to 100, then popped the Icarus Wing for a disappointing 50 TP and then the Blink band. I cast put on my Paeon III and IV then used a Selbina Milk.

Go in with a Finale to drop the first Etude (Dextrous) and he starts rocking me for 100+ a hit, the busts out Soul Voice Even match my ***. I melee a little, Requiem VI and he whiffs a few, I tried to Elegy but was "unable to see" him when I was looking RIGHT AT HIM.

After popping the Hi-potions I have, I try to sleep him after requiem wears off, but he resists. Yeah, great.

Where did I go wtong here?

Well, I guess I was a little excited and I suppose forgetting to two hour myself was a rather big oversight on my part, particularly where Paeons and Requiem were concerned. Dunno if I need a better sword than what I have, but I probably should have waited til I had a few more sleep potions for the opo-neclace too so my one change to Spirits Within would have made a real imapact.

Probably should have started with my two hour after all item buffs were on, then play Paeons, use the milk, lullabye Maat, Elegy, and Requiem VI him before engaging for melee I think I just got too excited and panicked.

earth staff is your friend, I dont know why people try to melee him and give them such headaches lol, you are giving Maat TP, which he can use WS alot more often....i keep on telling young Bards to not go in and melee, dont need to buy opo necklaces and all those sleeping potions, but neways ^_^

Yeah big over sight, you must 2 hour. Also you might want to invest in some Darksteel equipment, after all the AC is better and the - Damage % is good too. The other suggestion is this, use the blink band when you have gotten 100% TP through hitting, this means he's probably about to use his WS on you. Make sure your soul voice hits with both Elegy, and Requim, (And both Paeons) and make sure you renew both just before Soul Voice times out, you've gotten this far so you should have a good sense of when that'll happen.

nope just stood there and had the earth staff out attacking him, but since my staff skill was low, i wasent hitting him alot, just kept up my Mambo and Paeon IV, kept my life up when it dropped to yellow, kept up his Elegy and Requiem and it was over, of course all of my songs were 2hred at the beginning

Hamelins Flute has Evasion Bonus on it and the Requiem +2 (essential for extra Requiem VI damage), Earth Staff had -20% Physical Damage on it, Mambo another Evasion Boost, Paeon IV life up, and since my life rarely dropped below the yellow due to me using Hi Pots, the latent effects on the Carprice (sp) gear werent required, so I didnt need any of that gear... treat this Maat fight like a waterd down WHM Maat fight keep your life up. And Maat gives up at 30% so didnt have to kill him ^_^ I dont see why any Bard needs to kill him, nor why people stress the importance of all this extra crap, dagger and sword skills, and all that other jazz, really not necessary if played right :)

Your way may work for you, but other people have other methods. There's a video of a Bard (Cerus) that went in with double Mambo, and only got hit ONCE. That's right, 1 time! And THAT was only when his Mambos went down lol. He did double Mambo, had a bunch of evasion + gear (easily borrowed from NIN friend) and basically just stood there not getting hit while he chipped away at maat's HP.

Others have gone the double Paeon, wait him out approach, and that works too.

I know a couple that have double Minuet and wore gear that their WAR or DRK friends would wear, and beat the **** outta Maat.

Everyone claims their own way is the best, but there's so many ways to do this fight compared to other job's G5s.

WAR has 2 ways, the Axe way, or the Great Axe way (easier).
SMN has 1 way.
WHM has 1 logical way (trying to kill maat is too hard for WHMs)
SAM has one of the easiest ways...their 2HR is just too damn awesome.
NIN is perhaps one of the harder ones.
RDM is by far the hardest from what I've seen (videos) and read. Took a guy in my LS 4 tries.

Anywho, for BRD there is no one, end-all-be-all strategy. When I try it, well...if I try it, I'm trying the full out offensive way first. That sounds like a blast!

well what if you cant borrow any WAR/DRK/or NIN gear?
what if you dont have alot of money to buy the best weapons? what if you skill is not high enough?

I see your points, but some people dont have access to what you mentioned above. Bards arent melee, so either you have to do alot of skill up parties before you fight Maat, or like myself, want to get past the last Genki and just save money on the side and hurry up and beat him. Meh some folk wanna melee which is fine, but the way I did it was not to bug others for items of use, or spend tons of cash on items that can boost att, just to beat Maat and save on gil which I didnt have much off and save me the headache of getting another test ^_^

Then it sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. I'm 67 right now. I don't have all the gear I need for Maat, nor the sword skill (currently 134). I'm joining every coffer key party I see. I'm farming when I'm not in a coffer party. I'm cooking up everything I can possibly hope to profit on in order to make some cash. It's just another step you have to work at, like anything else in the game.

0/2 now. Time to get another test. This really wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to go back and get a test every damned time. Such a damn chore.

The whole Opo Necklace angle just doesn't seem to be worth the time wasted during the fight unless you're a straight melee, Blink Band doesn't seem all that helpful, either. He still cuts through blink for a crit right off the bat.

Went in same as before, this time I twohoured Peaon, Elegy and Requiem. Except since I had deleted a line from the shellbuster macro, elegy never took off, so I macroed from my usual list and /sigh macroed in shellbuster (I'm leaving it next time) for elegy, losing all TP I gained.

The Tavnazian Taco helped quite a bit and Selbina milk is a very nice Finale-blocker. Two-houred Paeons worked very well, kept me going for good while.

Got him to half HP, tho. Better than last time. tried X-pots rather than Hi-pots this time. 150 HP helped a little.

His *** will be mine next time, but hopefully some will be learning from my mistakes ^^

Third times was a charm. No *****-ups this time.

Maat Mashed.

Used all the seven remaining sleeping potions I had, ate my Tavnazian Taco. popped the blink band again, two hour, Paeonx2, Elegy, Requiem and then just meleed him and popped potions as needed. He whiffed a lot and Elegy really slowed him down under the two hour.

At the end of 10 Mins, I whittled him down to very low HP and won. I was always under the impression I just had to beat the ******* senseless, but apparently you just have to stand up to everything the guy throws at you and put him at low HP.

Anyway 71 now and very excited.
