The short preliminary tests i did and another pld i spoke with did, we find that sentinel recudes damage 60-70%.

I took a 120 damage crit, and 60-70 damage normal hits, with 20 on shield blocks

with sentinal up
i got crit'd for 35, 17-25 for normal hits, and all my shield blocks were single digits.

i dont know about enmity yet. but so far this is like a mini-invincible. it grabs hate, protects you a LOT, and lets you generate MORE enmity with subsequent actions.

edit:
with valor boots on, its near 100% damage reduction. hawt

Lets make the best of it. Havnt been home yet to try it and may be tomorrow I get to play with it. Just hope S/E doesnt see it being to much and try to do like a mini-nerf on it. So far it looks really cool but something that really makes both sentinel and rampart usefull. I just used them in past for straight hate grabbers and that was it. Will be looking foward to spaming these now.

Oh my fu.cking god

That's some serious damage reduction power

Edited, Dec 18th 2006 6:20pm by Valrath

ooops, thought was *with* v. boots on. With them, it's 100% damage reduction. This is just beyond godly. Thank you SE!

The Effects they added are great, however, can they really be all that useful? I mean its a 30 second effect with a 5 minute recast... That doesn't seem all that useful. Any thoughts?

well think of this. your tanking an HNM or just anything.
your getting mauled.

throw up sentinal. now your taking next to nothing for damage, and now you have some enmity boost.

now a cure4....
which is an enmity boosted cure4....

wheres the hate now? lol.

i could see this being invaluable on HNMs and other things. its great for PT situations too.

You are looking at it half empty...

The half full version looks like this:

1) The ability to generate more hate in 30 seconds than was possible before.

2) Merited you can get it close to 4:10 recast.

3) Situations may come where you can reset the timer instantly (COR, Beseiged).

Edit: kinda added my thoughts on Rampart not realizing we haven't started a Rampart discussion in here yet...

rampart is complete magic damage shielding

I thought Rampart was a magic stoneskin.

omg! did they just make valor boots useful?

The best part of Final Fantasy XI is its rich storyline. It separates this game from other MMORPGs. I chose to give my character a storyline that goes along with the game's storyline. I find that this is a more fun way to play the game. Playing the game just to fight in the endgame and collect elite equipment is very boring and is totally missing the main objective of the game, which is to guide your character through the storyline which is to save the world.

So if you're saying with Valor boots it's 100% reduction; that -kinda- gives you a 30 second Invincible every 5 minutes, with a slightly reduced hate spike?

Thanks a lot SE!! Now we have a USELESS 2-hour!! God, SE sucks!!

(For those without sarcasm-detectors: Kidding! Congratulations, those of you still PLD-ing it up! Looks like PLD really is getting the love it deserves again!! Take tons of 100 or 0 damage 1000 Needles alone for me! ^^)

I would just like to add that the improved Sentinel does stack with damage reduction gear, but by multiplication. I borrowed a friend's Earth Staff to test it. See this screenshot. Not really worth stacking damage reduction gear with it in EXP.

That's right, without Valor Boots. Unless Dreizehn was lying in that KI thread, it seems Valor Boots really do bump up Sentinel to 100% damage reduction. And really, I don't see why he would lie; I can confirm myself that his report of it being 90% damage reduction is true (the first thing I did when I got online was go look for a Sabotender.)

I've only done a few small tests so far but from what i noticed:

The damage mitigation does grow weaker as time passes. On Hpemde i was seeing things like 1>4>9>11>13 etc. damage taken.

Valor Boots do boost the effect noticeably, but it is not always 100%. Tanking Zilart mission 4 for a friend, as well as a few mobs in sea, the 1st hit after sentinel did 1 damage. I haven't been able to teel yet if the boots reduce the rate at which the effect weakens.

Of course it is much more noticeable on mobs that will hit harder than others. Try this out on Lesser Colibri, and you'll probably be disappointed. Use it on something that will hit for 50+ and it is much more noticeable.

Haven't been able to prove or disprove this, but rumor has it Sentinel no longer spikes hate alone, only enhances anything you do to generate hate while it is in effect.

As for Rampart:

Valor Coronet does enhance it of course. I can't get a very good idea on just how much Stoneskin-ish it gives, but i have heard 100 without coronet, and 150 with. From what i can tell, the Stoneskin applies to anyone who is hit with Rampart's effect. Tested this, again on Zilart 4. Used Rampart right before Astral Flow, and no one took any more that 120 damage. Take that for what you will, Astral Flow doesn't do much in that BCNM to begin with.

Also, the shield Mastery kicks ***. Timing your cures-utsusemi-/RDM buffs is a bit easier now if you feel confident in your shield skill. The Spell Inerruption down does seem to be 100% when you do block. I have yet to be interrupted during a shield block.

I'm only a lvl 35 PLD but I found the new sentinal to be useful in the EXP party I was in tonight. I never had a problem getting aggro the moment I used it even if provoke has having trouble to do so, which was great when we ran into a bit of trouble and I had to get the mob off of other party members. I can't wait to see how it will work when I reach higher lvls.

Sounds like PLD+SMN could be a fun exp party (sentinel + phalanx + stoneskin). Though I guess the PLD wouldn't get much hate from cures with so little damage taken.

If you wanna go this route, you are better off with /RDM. Stoneskin, Phalanx, Enspells, Blaze Spikes. Its true however you wont be able to spam cure yourself for hate because of a huge damage reduction, the way to hold hate with /RDM is spamming flash, blind, and bind or the occasional sleep for spike hate and most importantly your JAs.

Putting up Stoneskin in mid-battle is no longer an issue, with PLDs A+ in shield skill, bloking hits means no spell interruption at all. I was soloing Heraldic Imps all day yesterday (earned 4 merits ^^), I must say I am really impress with this update. Putting up Rampart when the Imp does a tier 3 nuke or a tier 2 ga nuke, if Rampart is not ready, Shield Bash or Flat Blade to stun it. Worst case scenario if the Imp just happened to do the Amnesia move on you >.< just put up the corresponding Bar<element> spell, chances are you will get your Bar<element> spell up before his nukes goes off.

-Azn

edit- Sorry I'm at work lol, damn graveyard shift, I just reread your post and it says PLD+SMN not PLD/SMN doh. sorry about that ^^;

So playing around last night I fell in love w/ sentinel....mobs normally hitting me for 120...try 30-40 now, crits were still below 100!

On the other hand, I wasn't so impressed w/ rampart. Took a Flood to the face, asked blm before hand to let a big spell through, and was still hit for 650ish. While this is better than getting hit in the 800s or higher it still is a big hit to take. I was wearing my jelly ring so that obviously didnt help.

Can someone confirm whether AF2 needs to remain equipped for the bonus to remain active, or can it be macro swapped in/out as Drg do with their AF2 Head, or is it like Mnk AF2 Feet which need to remain on for improved Counterstance?

I'm sorry... are you seriously complaining about what amounts to using Invincible every 5 minutes?

A data point from the low levels, last night at PLD47->48. That KI thread pretty much confirms exactly what I was seeing, 90% damage reduction.

No information about the hate enhancement, as although I certainly timed Sentinel and the other tools to match up, I was just instinctively managing hate like I usually do. In retrospect I might have set hate more readily with the new Sentinel, but that's just an anecdotal feeling, not a data point.
