why are you comparing the absolute best the AH has to offer thief to the standard for other jobs? you can make a modest (but still functionally good) gear set for roughly the same cost as any other job. just for giggles, lets see if i can make a respectible newbie build entirely from the ah for less than 5m.

tp set:
blau dolch ~2200k
misercorde +1 ~280k
bombcore ~40k
war beret ~20k
spectacles ~24k
spike earring ~25k
spike earring ~25k
scorpion harness ~160k
taresque mitts ~60k
woodsman ring ~150k
woodsman ring ~150k
ammement mantle +1 ~230k
life belt ~30k
dusk trousers ~450k
war boots ~20k

SA & TA swaps:
emperor hairpin ~500k
dragon harness ~100k
spike necklace ~10k
drone earring ~20k
drone earring ~20k
spinel ring ~45k
spinel ring ~45k
emerald ring ~30k
emerald ring ~30k
warwolf belt ~5k
dragon subligar ~40k
dragon leggings ~15k

total cost: ~4,724,000

what do you know, i even have some change. this is using prices from my server via ffxiah.com. there is alot of room for emprovement in this build yes, but it is also using gear completely from the AH and has several nice items that will be good for a long time. over half the total cost is in the weapons alone, i could have gone much more conservative here.

a person wearing this gear wont be topping any parsers, but they are far from what i would call gimp, and would be able to hold their own in most settings. once you start adding r/x gear the prices start getting cheaper as well as results start getting dramatically better, until you get to the point where the upgrades are expensive for small returns. this is something all jobs go through, not just thief.
Quote:
Someone said that there is not a difference. Take Thf and War. For war to outdamage the thf, war would have to be avg gear and the thf would have to good gear if not great gear. If both are geared on the same level a thf will not outdamage a war. There is a clear differnce.
the thing is, you cannot directly compare the two. if there is a seperate tank in the party, while the thief might not do as much damage as the warrior, the thief allows the warrior to take hate less often, which in turn allows the warrior to do more damage. the same can be said about feint. if the warrior is tanking as well, they do less damage, making them what i defined earlier as a utility DD, ie they sacrifce some damage in order to contribute more to the party. if you look at the total of what a job offers rather than strictly its DD output, the difference isnt as clear as you make it out to be.

edit: hey look, my hypathetical newbie thief build cost the same as shacka's dragoon and dancer, and cheaper than his ninja and monk.

Skill, aka not being lazy, plays more into who does the most damage than gear.

At first, My main goal for THF was for TH, I never planned in taking it pass 25(TH1 and Flee), let alone taking it pass 37. Then I started actually getting into the job, actually enjoying the job for more than just TH. Getting through Crawler's Nest, I began soloing T-VT Flies and started having a blast, while at the same time thinking, if i can solo T+ mobs, what could I solo at higher lvls. Ose was my first victim, tho I became the victim lol. at the time, not enough Eva, and Blaster along with it's additional para effect if it hits you was my major downfall, but I got him eventually... still no drop tho lol. Then I wanted to go for something stronger, something that drops an awesome weapon most THF's wish to own but refuses to camp. I eventually solo'd Kruetzet after 4 attempts with my forth being a successful kill and drop(long time ago).

Brutal in place of Ethereal depending on enemy.
Sirocco in place of Tatami depending on enemy.
Mirke Wardecors: Evasion+10 Ranged Accuracy+10

Still a growing THF but a THF I am proud to be. Though my initial intent was TH only, my motives have changed =)

but in the end you still get to play the job you enjoy.

Going to X event for this reason doesn't count as "playing the job i enjoy" when the end result a majority of the time of for "last 5% HP's for teh TH zomg"

I aint playing jack, im just the "TH *****" at that point"

im sure any bst, pup, blu, dnc or any other job that doesnt get picked for anything in endgame would gladly take your TH ability if they had the option.

...and I would gladly give it to them

If I could give some form of TH on THF like SAM can give their extra tp over 100 to a friend I would gladly do so.

It's not like a properly geared THF would be a waste for climbing floors. Even Flee can be useful for hauling *** back to the rune to hit next floor. It's not likely that anyone else is gonna be subbing /THF for it.

I know it's not a waste for climbing floors, i wasnt implying MYSELF was the waste when i said this, I guess i should've clarified it a bit more. I have max Feint, capped crits, evasion merited + gear and skill+ for it, capped triple, Nyzul WS for shiggles, TP/WS/r.acc/and evasion gear sets/acros for it. About all im missing really is a Love Torque and some key skadi pieces and I would have my THF exactly where I want it: ready to start the journey for a Mandau.

I usually go COR to nyzul with my static, but on my free days in the middle of the week when im sitting on tags collecting dust, i find myself a healer and support so i can bring THF, because it's just that much more fun.

I co-led a sky ls for a few months and I pretty much wanted a THF there for TH at almost everything. Occasionally, I pretty much assumed every THF had TH3 (and a few made me cringe, because quite frankly that was all they were good for). A few other's with more useful jobs asked if they could come THF my response was only if you max merit Feint.

You would love my THF then, only TH2 but i have the max feint merits you are looking for ^ ^

mmmm, I love getting turned down for a Nyzul boss run b/c I only have TH3

I have TH4 (not me, other member, i go COR remember XD) for every boss floor with my static. After realizing drops were still crap, said member went back to SAM and it works just fine for us.

The last thing I consider myself in this game is a TH-*****, period. I'd rather solo 30,000xp than be invited to an XP because TH2 was cool to have around. I've spent far too much time doing my best to become adept at playing/gearing THF only to be pigeon-holed by a passive trait that's often used as a scapegoat when random luck screws other players out of what they think the game owes them. :/

This is a great post! Speaking as someone who was a pure auction house THF for a long time I can say without a doubt that most people I partied with thought I was better than most THFs they partied with. No my gear wasnt the best but I knew how to play the job for the most part. I actually used some of the jaridah stuff in my TP set when leveling and first hitting 75 til i finally got a rapp harness. and i used war beret til i got an ohat. i still use dragon gear cuz i dont have anything but hecca body etc. i mainhanded a harpe i think and offhand misericode til i got my blau and before that i think i was using behemoth +1 or some crap. whatever i could get on the AH that gave decent stats and i could afford i got.

i dont think anyone expects you to hit 75 and be awesomely geared but i mean if you show up to a merit party in a war beret, dex rings, a SH, AF hands, AF pants and a spike necklace you are just looking to get kicked and shouldnt be meriting. you should be farming so you could get rid of that atrocious gear

also if you already have nin, mnk, dnc and drg at 75 why arent you in a limbus shell, get homam and not even ever worry about dusk? i still have dusk trousers and ledelsens that i cant wait to dump.

dont be so quick to unload dusk trousers, they make a great DE piece until you can get something better.

Got half way down and saw the "PLD stands at maximum distance post." I too, had this problem today with a level 65 PLD. Makes my blood boil. Sure, it happens from time to time, but if you tell them, and they straight up ignore you.. It gets annoying. Upside is, if it begins to happen.. You can start to show off a little. PLDs that can't even stand in range to assist generally arnt the best PLDs knocking around. So SA~DE is nice for stealing hate on that ungreatful so and so. [/rant]
