A rant about THF in pts - When SATA goes badlyFollow

Hello all.

I play THF on one of my mules and have recently got it up to 40 (5 more lvls to go for TH2 ; ; ).

Anywho, I won't claim to be the greatest THF to ever walk my server or assume I know it all, but lately... well, actually since lvl 30, I've been having trouble getting PTs to work with me for SATA.

Its maddening!! I might not be the best, but I try. I use a full Noct +1 set, a Feathered Collar +1 and RACC rings when I fight and swap out for DEX gears for SATA. I play THF/WAR, so I tend to rely on my crossbow for keeping up in TP gain and to help out the pt with various status bolts (I usually have about 1 of every kind I can equip and 6 stacks of acid bolts). I really feel I am trying, but its so frustrating.

Tanks won't stay still, First voker just stands there for 10-15 seconds when I get to camp, Tanks won't line line up, Tanks turn the mob so its back is to a wall, someone overnukes at the start of the fight or overcures the first voker when he takes a hit or two..

Seriously, its disheartening. My best SATA partner since I left the jungle was a BST/NIN who had built the pt I was in. I had one WAR/NIN who came to my pt to skill up his Axe... and he was using a sword in his offhand. ><; And he was rank 10!

My mule is only rank 2, so in a way, I'm sure people don't expect that I know much when I'm playing her, but I see Rank 4-10 without any knowledge of how SATA works. How is that possible? And then I sound unreasonable and grumpy (which I am, but this point) when I have to repeat myself to get the pt (or at least the melees) to work with me for this. I've given up trying to SC. I just try to land SATA+VB on the tank at the start of the fight, and even that feels like pulling out my teeth with my toes.

How do you guys do it? How do you stay sane? And are there any possible tips that I could try to make a pt more agreeable? I want to contribute to my pts as much as I can, and I enjoy the challenge of this job, but dealing with idiots is taking the fun out of it. ; ;

and in closing...

/salutes all THFs - its not an easy job.

People are silly... it's a lot more annoying when they do it at level 50 too. Just try and explain it, ask them to listen, and if they dont; just sata whatever is standing behind until they die. ^^ But usually explaining, and continous explaining, is the best way to go.

If not, try and get on at JP hours, they're (generally) much more thf-friendly, both in terms of invites and know-how.

I've had a few problem parties like that, too. My usual solution is to make sure the party stops fighting, stops talking, everything and listen and explain EXACTLY what they need to do. You should be able to do that because you'll usually be the puller. Just don't pull until everyone's clear on what they're supposed to do. If after you explain everything no one does their job, kindly re-explain what they're supposed to do. If they still don't do it, leave the party because having someone THAT incompitent in your party reeks of death and/or really, really slow exp.

But sometimes it's just so satisfying in parties like that (especially in low-mid levels where your name really doesn't count for much) to SATAWS someone that's not supposed to have hate (i.e. someone that likes to set up camp behind the mob) to teach them exactly how useful SATA really is. Do that once or twice in a party and you'll be surprised how quickly people listen to you...or kick you from the party. ;)

If the first voker has to take a hit or two, that means the SATA is too slow - either from you not precharging or the tank not moving. In such circumstances have the main tank voke then start off the battle with a skillchain. You can then split up TA and SA without hate issues.

As to the WAR/NIN offhanding a sword - in the 30-40 range there are no good one hand axes so a sword is the best offhand weapon for a WAR/NIN even though the rating is 'B'.

Thanks all.

First I've heard of 'precharging'. What is that?

As for the war/nin, his axe had a dmg of 30-something, his sword was 19, I believe. I figured, even there aren't any good axes at his lvl, he could at least double up with the best available, rather than gimping himself and the pt. I believe I also mentioned he was skilling up axe. Said he was 30 lvls under cap (was 38 at the time). Now, I believe, after skill lvl 100, a weapon gains 3 lvls/xp lvl. Which, judging by my WS lvl at the time left his weapon skill the equivalent of a WAR at 30.

No offense, but he should be doing that sort of thing on his own time. At least, that's what I hear if I ever ask to use a sword with THF to get that back up close to cap (which isn't gonna happen now, since its so far behind).

It just seem like proper courtesy that if you're going to an xp pt, you come set already at your best. Not show up with ineffecient gear and lacking skills. Or maybe that's just me.

I wish it was this simple. In more than half the parties I've been in as BRD where the song setup is a little more complex than just "mages here, melee there" I've explicitly told everyone where I need them to stand, repeated myself, and asked for confirmation that they understand, and that they repeat my instructions back to me- then when the very first fight starts they don't even pretend to get into formation, it's just all random. I've worked with children with learning disabilities, and from playing BRD it seriously feels like par for FFXI player intelligence is right around "3rd grader in a special-ed class". I'd imagine this is a pretty similar experience to that.

I personally feel it's better to leave a party like that than allow them to give you a headache, but that's not always an option when invites are few and far between. Just keep trying to explain it as best you can until someone listens to you. The higher level you go the more likely people will be to understand and listen to you.

'Precharging' means firing off SA and TA before you pull, then get into position for SATA before engaging. It takes 1-2 second off the time requires for SATA to go off, and makes your timer available for a second SATA sooner. It's a common tactic between 30-60.

Yeah, 30 to 60 is a mess with that. What people have listed already is your best bet; Just try explaining it multiple times. If it still doesn't work; leave. Invites are slow, but +Exp is better than -Exp, and parties like that reek of -Exp. And, on a side note:

Plain and simple,

People are stupid no mater what their level or rank. After leveling MNK to 75 and now starting on THF to 75 you would be amazed at people who know nothing.

You would think by observing other jobs for hours you would atleast know the basic responsibility and attributes of each job. . . However you will still get those level 75 rank 10 people who don't know anything about Assassin or about what DoT is (BTW Damage over Time >.>).

Just grind your teeth and say "LOOK! Unless you line up and do **** right people will die!". I guess after that once the mages die a few times maybe they will get the hint.

Good Luck.

I asked that same question at your level. plvls make it even worse because even if you do get your party to stand right where you want them, now you have one more person to worry about yanking hate JUST before you start to swing and you "SATA" for an unimpressive 50-70.

And of course, try to convince the party to kick the plvl and keep you. That always goes over well. I actually got lucky and was in a party in Garlaige where the NIN and WHM were both friends of mine and the SAM/WAR was getting sick of the plvl yanking hate too. I asked the plvler several times, politely at first and then gradually more angrily, to stand behind the SAM... he just stood as far from the party as possible at all times. Finally, the DRK (plvler's friend) said that "If you don't like it, we're leaving!" and did. And we got a DRG and did quite well.

I can say I'm both happy and lucky to have a good NIN to static lfp or form a party with, as that covers at least half of the equation.

In my experience, the higher you get, the more likely it is that you can get people who are good first vokes and SATA buddies. Remember these people and invite them over and over and over again. My NIN friend and I have been keeping a running list of the good melees and good mages we party with (melees moreso than mages) and inviting the same ones over and over again if we can get them; sometimes even asking them when they aren't even lfp.

Inviting people you know are good players not only saves you from having to make a "/p STAND BEHIND THE GODDAMN MOB SO I CAN SATA YOU, IT'S NOT THAT @#%^ING HARD!!!!!" macro, but it gets you friends in the process as well. They'll make your job that much easier and that much more fun ^^

Not always. I partied with a DRK/THF who seemed to want to hit SA and jump behind the mob right before SATA, every fight. No matter how many times he ended up tanking, he still didn't get it until we told him not to even engage at all until after first SATA and voke from primary tank.

Everyone I've seen with a tendancy to stand behind the mob once, THF sub or not, seems to keep standing behind it no matter how many times I SATA them; mistake or not.

Not until they're lv50 and don't know how to use SATA. A THF30 without real knowledge of how SATA works isn't so uncommon, because they probably haven't take the time to research their job. Something that is, unfortunantly, very common.

I dont see how any1 can play thier job without looking it up and at least learning the basics of how to be a good Thief or any other job. It drives me crazy now that sumtimes i have to explain to people how to do thier own jobs while im attempting to do SATA. pull and get every1 in the right place for SATA... It seems to me like common courtesy would get people to just read up on it at least a lil bit

LOL,

From 1-30 thf can be quite frustrating, but from 30 onwards I have CHEERED, SHOUTED, SWORE(lots), CRIED, LAUGHED, STARED AT THE TV WITH WIDE EYES and MOUTH OPEN.........etc. I have just reached 49THF/24NIN and the last 19 levels have been great fun!
Reading the above threads is quite funny as I have gone through the same myself, (especially : /p STAND BEHIND MOB PLEASE!!!!! )macro ..lol
I think all the above advice is good, and sometimes you just have to be patient. I try to stick with a certain group who know how to play as SATA buddies. Everyone is differnt i guess and some genuinely just don't know.
It took me about level 40 to become good at SATA and I am not ashamed of that. (it takes practice, and I learnt loads from other party members who helped me if I was making a mess of things). Sometimes, everytime I pulled there was a POP or LINK and I died 3 or 4 times and made a complete mess of SATA for 3hours, and just looked crap.......but sometimes it all comes together and the party works a dream.
Anyway, I love playing a THF, The THF in my opinion is a job which keeps you on your toes to do it properly, If you constantly make no effort to learn how to be effective in this role or cannot grasp what is required then try a WAR or something and just stand there with your weapon and take it, but personally i would just stick with it and hopefully you can have as much fun as i am, after all it IS only a game! ISN'T IT??????

I had a lvl 51 noob nin that wouldn't SATA at all. I asked him to get into SATA pos but he wouldn't.

I asked him if he even knew what SATA was and he didn't answer. After like half an hour he told me to SATA myself @.@; when I kept asking him to get into SATA pos. He also told off the war everytime he first voke and voked off him everytime.

Then he 2 houred in the middle of a fight. He came back as his lvl 70 something war and tried to MPK us.

*****
Also, I hate it when tanks are not directly behind the mob. They're a bit left or right, but never truely lined up. Why is that? It's not like the mob's behind goes into hiding when the action becomes to much. What is wrong with finding Front and Center?

Don't get me started about the Floating melee rdm or blu that gets SATA on and owned >.>; It's not murder if they walked into it on their own. It's like jumping on to thf train tracks!

OP, if you are still checking this thread, the above quote is EXACTLY how i lvl'd thf. I had one horrendous pt in the early 60's and from then on i just ganked whoever repeatedly got between the mob and the tank.

And when i just couldn't take it anymore, i would just wait for JP primetime and put my flag-up then. Yeah there were a few JP who didn't know SATA setup(even in the 60's.....), but there was 1 major difference. They seemed much more open to the idea of learning how to setup with a thf than their NA counterparts.

Just keep with it OP, patience will win the day for you in the end.

Qouted for truth. And my answer, I macro two things in a palette I don't use.

1. /p Do you know basic SATA setup?

If they answer yes, and all goes well, then good.

2. Make another macro for when they answer no, calling them noobs and explaining SATA. /end*sorta*rant.

Even at level 69 where I'm at now it can get bad. Today I was in a party where everyone but the tank insisted I SATA at the start. Thats fine, the War said he was ok with first voking.

Unfortunatly he had a bad habit of voking as I pulled, waiting about 3 seconds (as I and the tank are getting into place) and then moving around into what he though was a better position. Alot of this is because of player lag, and seeing people in the place they were a few seconds ago.

Thus being said, its still the THF that gets the heat from the party when hate is flying around because the tank is still waiting to voke. Fortunatly after 60, TA can still hit, but again, if the mob has run off, that doesn't mean anything.

If you get a frustrating party, you can do 3 things it seems. 1, try to explain whats going wrong, and if they listen, you should do better. 2, keep trying to cope with with the difficulties, or 3, leave the party.

So we end up taking control of parties, which many times frustrates the other members with us. Its a troubling situation. You don't want to be demanding of everyone, but you can't do your job without a little order in the party.

THF's need a delicate balance of hate to succesfully use SATA. Good luck. You'll love TA with assassin.

To stay sane.. um.. still working on that.

Warrior's axe @32 is nice to have.

Centurion's Sword @30 has some nice stats but I stil prefer either 2x warrior axe or Bastokan Greataxe.

dont sweat it... Im a THF (and brd) and then again i have people lvling with my COR (71 now) but back when I was lvl 50... you think people would finally get the idea on how to fkkn position for ballads (Evokers) and melee songs/dice after lvl 40

(i consider anything under 39 to be a SJ, even though SJ caps at 37... and 40+ means you give a damn about the job to lvl it further)

but then again people still decide to bunch up in a little ball and im forced to Evokers and Fighters Roll on the entire PT back when I was lvl 50... it wasnt till around lvl 55+ when a majority of your PT's are in Aht Urghan areas when people get the picture...

It almost led me to believe that people with more than one job lvl'd high actually know how to PT with a BRD... THF or a Corsair seeing as how they will always line up right... always separate... and the exp just rolls in.

my advice for you is just make the most of it... As a BRD and COR i've had to say in PT chat "You think after XX lvl people would know how to position for my job..." and that usually get some interesting remarks from PT members XD

Well too bad and im sorry if I come off as an ***... but if your past lvl 40... when a job is no longer considered a Support job... you should know how to do your fkkn job right... and position so others can do theirs...

Unless... you Mr. DD... WANTS ballad on you instead of 2 melee songs or Melee dice... then be my guest... as a COR i can just stop spamming bullets and as a BRD I see no reason to even waste even one of my HYPER EXPENSIVE pamamas for a PT that doesnt know how to PT with a support job that deals with AOE type buffs.

The best answer that i can give as a lvl 61thf and 62sam is to be the party leader.

1. you dont wait for hours for a invite. ( "/sea all 28-32 inv" is your friend)

2. replace people that will not do there job without warning. gimp along with the exp until the replacement gets there then boot the non player for the good of the party. once booted /s then about why they got booted and to stop being a noob.

3. build the party that is best for thf... keeping in mind what skillchain you want to create based on the mobs you are going to fight.

4. see reason two again

I feel your pain. I was in a party in Garliage Citadel some time ago there was another THF besides me too. How it worked, PLD would first voke, I would SATA onto our WAR, other THF SATA onto PLD. And yet, I could only get this to work once a fight. Everytime i would go for 2 SATA in a fight the WAR would move out of the way or provoke... Don't even let me start about VB... The last like 5 or so times i tried to SATA Viper Bite the mob this WAR would provoke the second before I WSed so i couldn't do anything. I know it wasn't my fault, the other THF had an awesome partner who knew what SATA was. It really got me mad, I ended up just leaving after a little while. Stick with it though, thats just unlucky.

Heh, it is a pain when they wont set up right, I've given up trying to explain when they dont line up. I just do as I please and when they complain then I explain why i'm doing it.

Sata'ing a Mage is always fun when they wont f'king listen when you say to get out the way. I've even Sata'd a tank while weakened because he wouldnt listen to what I was telling him. Sata is a fun way to get people's attention.

Just hang in there n it'll get better (I hope). I'm currently lvl 48 Thf and loving every second of it ^^ Its by far the most fun job to play!

If anyone on Asura wants to party with a Thf that knows what he's doing then please /tell me for a party ^^

I had some minor problems in this regard last night leveling 34-36 in Garlaige Citadel.

A basic SATA to start the fight wasn't TOO much of a problem once the drk started setting up initial SATA. He wanted the nin tank to have as much hate as possible so he could use Souleater, I think. But setting up any subsequent SATA were kind of a pain, I'd generally wait til SATA VB would take the mob down to 1-2 hits from death and SATA on the Drk. We eventually wound up with Nin, Thf, Sam, Blm, Blm, Whm. No one seemed interested in skillchains, which is definitely not optimal with 2 MB and a distortion SC avail.

Some questions gave me the impression that the Sam didn't see many SC opportunities to this point, for some reason hardly anyone uses SC in any organized manner before 30 anymore. A quick explanation of keeping the pt informed about your tp (Not really that big an issue, even a mediocre Sam always has TP 30+), and a request to use Third Eye, voke, then open with Tachi: Enpi to yank hate of the tank and watch what happens next. The result was about 70% of the bat in question's health vanishing like a snowflake in a woodstove, and suddenly everyone couldn't wait to help the SATA go smoothly. One of the blm was actually leveling a sub for Rdm, so had a little experience with MB, explaining how it worked to the other blm and with some work on timing, we added two Water II MBs to the fun. Now, we'd spend one fight building TP with normal SATA's as opportunities would arise, and I'd spam acid bolts to build tp (2 marksmanship merits). The next mob, even if it was a beetle would generally die in about 30 seconds. I'd make a point of pulling at close range to stick an acid bolt for debuff, we'd open with the Sam voking and using Tachi: Enpi and I'd SATA VB on the nin. Quite a few times, no one even lost a shadow, Third eye is handy. Bats dropped instantly, sometimes the second MB would abort because the mob was dead. Some careful timing gave us quite a few chain 5's. I've played war at 75 for a long time, and was kind of disappointed to find that very few parties below 40 experience chain 5 without a PL.

The trick to getting a party to participate is not to lecture, or explain what they're doing wrong. Try saying, you want to see something cool, do this. Everyone loves participating in laying down big numbers. When the big numbers also guarantee that the tank can hold hate through anything, and the blm get to show they're uber without fear of death, and even bigger numbers than normal, and you get total enthusiasm. Yeah, it's frustrating to miss a SATA VB because the tank wanders, or the blms throw in early nukes, but giving them a reason to help you is most effective. Everyone had a great time, those without higher level jobs commenting that it was the best party they'd ever had. The 2 of us who were used to endgame parties have had parties with better xp rates, we were running about 5k/hr. But I don't know that I've ever had one that was more fun.

Well the trick to landing a consistant SATA(WS) is to just land one. Once they see 20-25% of a mob's HP drop off the DRK will somehow think it is his doing and be a good first voke. True he won't shut the hell up about how well he vokes first, but he tries. Sadly, he is still a DRK.

Really though, once people see the 400-700 numbers go up for hate onto the tank they learn pretty darn quick. The first SATA is your make-or-break move, if they don't get it then odds are they won't get it, ever. Or for at least half an hour of hard explaining and cursing at the lack of vocabulary in the auto-translate.
