yes, you'll be wanted...there might be a couple whm's looking for party at the same time, if you don't mind making your own party it will go even smoother. you'll get invites and asked to help when just minding your own business. the only fall off is around 41+ when RDM gets convert and refresh...and people seem to think they are better healers.

i'd go as BLM first, get used to the controls and the gameplay, they are always wanted...then by the time you can have a subjob and switch to whm/blm, you'll understand more and be able to support an entire party of people, plus you'll have more abilities and mp at your disposal.

You'll end up solo'ing to level 10-12-ish. A white mage will be the optimum healer, until level 14, when a rdm catches up on the healing spells for a bit. Red mage also gets fast cast at 15, but white mage gets Divine Seal, which can be a life saver at times. At 16, it is important to mention that white mage gets curaga, an area of effect cure. Red mage does not naturally receive the curaga line of spells. At level 21, whm pulls ahead again with cure III. At 25, white mage gets the raise spell. Red mage gets Cure III at 26, so they've kind of caught up again, but with a lack of raise. At 32, red mage gets the dispel spell, and at 38, they get raise. At 40, red mage gets convert, and at 41, they get refresh.

Throughout the red mage career, they will never have as much mp as a white mage, and they will never get any spells that cure status effects, such as poisona, paralyna, and the sort. They will never get curaga spells, or the higher level of cure spells or regen spells. But they can sub white mage to halfway fix this problem. So, white mage has higher healing potential, but red mage has the ability to keep mp for longer, therefore, keeping the experience chain rolling, and getting more experience.

Each healing job is wanted in different situations, and I think it is important to mention that there are a few other jobs that can do a decent job of healing if they sub white mage.

What does this have to do with the OP's question?

Priests in WoW are a little different then those in FFXI. The are the main healers, yes, but Priests have the Shadow line of spells are have more damage/solo capabilities then the FFXI WHM.

Still, I would say that WHM are one of the most wanted/needed classes in the game, for party play. Which is good, because as a WHM you won't be doing much of anything past lvl 12 solo. WHM are not only practically essential in lower parties (and certain high end parties depending on situation), but they are masters of travel: WHM get Sneak/Invis, Teleport Spells, and if they sub /BLM, Warp. WHM can be pretty much anywhere in the world of Vana'diel in a matter of minutes. This is very handy to get around for quests/missions and gathering materials for crafting, etc.

If you are planning on playing WHM, I would suggest you actually start out as a BLM. The reason being they have an easier time soloing to party levels, and most low level parties in the Valkurm Dunes will snatch up a BLM quickly, regardless if they have a subjob. Take that to 18 when you can get a subjob, then start levelling WHM with the /BLM sub. This will make your life much easier, believe me. Levelling as a WHM in low level parties is hell, even more so without a subjob.
