Hey i looked around the forums for the answer to this but didn't find this anywhere so sorry if this is a repeated question. if you're tired of answering the same thing over and over than don't bother and let someone else answer. anyway my question is what spec is the best for leveling a mage? i'm thinking like up to level 40 at which point i'll probably respec to try out something new. I may want to pvp a bit on my way so if you guys have any suggestions that are at least a little pvp friendly while still good for soloing that would be great. Thanks.

Well the two main leveling specs i would chose would be Fire, or Frost

Now they are both good in their own ways, but it really depends on how you want to level, now i know you mentioned pvp and they both have their own place in pvp (fire is more loved tho)

Frost is good for either solo mob grinding, and groups

Fire is good for AoE grinding and more solo'ing than groups (although you are still wanted)

so that is what i have to say to help you make your decision

I'd say you have that kind of backwards. From my experience, FROST is good for AoE grinding because of Blizzard, CoC, and FN. Those are all great tools to use for AoE grinding IMO. Frost is also good for single target soloing but requires more movement than fire in this area.

IMO FIRE is great for single target grinding because you can burn down your target before it gets to you in most cases. The downside to fire is that it burns up your mana pool faster than frost. Some argue that at the cost of drinking more you get more kills faster. IMO go with whichever spec appeals to you. Frost for control and killing and fire for destroying one target at a time and drinking every few fights.

here are a couple builds I think you will like:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=RZZVVGukbxooo

that is for 40 frost (just threw some talents together there)

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=kZxgMzf0Iohz

is for 40 fire. Again, I am sure there many be a better build by throwing a couple points around here or there, but I think that should be the gist of it.

question about flame throwing. I'm ready to take those talents now, but how do you use them? Right now I use frostbolt to slow them down to kill them before they get to me. But with flame throwing, my fire spells will greatly outreach my frostbolt. So do you just not use frostbolt anymore?

I recently respecced my 25 mage to fire spec, and i find the best thing to start the fight off with is a pyroblast, then 1-2 fireballs depending how fast they move, fireblast, then FN if necessary, Blink and fireball

yeah I got pyroblast now. such a long cast time, I'm not sure if it's slowing down my grinding. Seems like 2 fireballs will do just as much damage. But it's not all at once. Allowing me to start off with it, then cast a fireball after, then frost nova, and another fireball. That usually kills everything.

I think you can do both. Yes Fireball has greater range, so you can go Fire, frost then fire again (either ball or blast) (should be dead at equal levels). Or move closer and go frost, then 2 fire, should be close to same if they did not resist the frost bolt. But in the same cases, I do not find I can get off 3 fireballs from Max range. Like people have said, even the frost 1 will slow them down.

Was going to recommend the same thing. I would use a pyroblast then maybe a fireball if it is still not in range of your frostbolt (if it is, use a rank1 to snare them) then go back to using firespells.

I have lvled frost and fire, and neither is faster if you know what you are doing.

Frost: AOE, maybe 5-6 enemies, use all mana, drink.

Fire: Solo, kill one enemy, then another, then another, till you get 5-6 (each kill takes about 10 seconds usually, where frost the mob takes about a minute.)
Then drink. It's all the same.

thrashering, as for your question, if you are speccing fire, then no, you really don't need frost bolt. however, it has its uses, not in leveling but in pvp sometimes. sometimes.
