I having been playing about a year. My first toon was a human mage. Played a lot learning the game, but I guess I never learned to be a mage. Other toons level much faster. Since I was a mage with no healing, I run to the graveyard more than to the bank. Do any of you Mage experts have advice to return me from the darkside(melee)

Remember to use frost nova and stuff.
As a mage you don't get much hp, but you get a pretty huge bag of tricks to prevent taking damage altogether. Just check out your abilities and remember to keep moving. Mage pve is harder in the sense that you have to have a bit of strategy for every kill you make, whereas hunters just send in the pet, autoshoot and wait it out.

This much is obvious.

Explain to us a little about your build and playstyle and we can try to help you.

That is a couple good points. I was using fire for everything, hardly ever froze someone, and still move like an old lady (Why I suck at Duels). I wish I did not delete the first Alcattle, so I could looked at the hours I put on him.

That sounds like your main problem. You have to learn to kite if you really want to play a mage. Doing it at all is actually pretty simple. Doing it well takes some practice.

ok, so letting them run to you and then you pull out a sword means I am really bad. As silly as it sounds, I did it that way, years of Ultima (not online)

Your sword should almost never have a drop of blood on it.

After hunters the best soloists ingame imo.

OK, Thanks, I will try again and play like you said. I think it will help me in most of my characters, including hunter.

Mages pve and pvp by killing the enemies before they reach them and can drink and eat. They are excellent soloist. Those mages let say around lvl 10~ who cant kill a normal levelled mob without getting the hurt(full mp there) is a newb. Any higher is a noob

I have a fire spec mage and I hardly need to use frost nova with him. By the time my target gets within 10 yards of me it's dead.

Pyroblast - Fireball - Fireball - Fireblast = Dead mob.

IF one is resisted, just frostnova the mob when it gets to you, move a tad out of reach and toss a fireball and, if needed, a fireblast.

IMO mages are the class that kill the quickest in PvE... Downside to them? Having to sit & drink a little more often than other classes.

I just started a mage alt after leveling a hunter to 70. So far I am having a blast. I went frost because I solo a lot and feel like I can have more control over the enemy. Whether you go frost or fire with FN and Blink you shouldn't have too many problems. If you try to take on too many enemies with any class you are going to have some corpse walks.

If you go frost and don't plan on AoE grinding having Frostbite is a nice little extra. Saves a little mana by not having to use FN when it hits. However, don't put points into it if you plan do AoE.

Go level a pally or warrior and talk about worst solo'ist

I've leveled a mage, they're an amazing solo class. Hint: Without the melee ;)

As a holy spec.

I think things just die of boredom when I'm soloing them. I really do.

lol I have a holy spec pally. I want to be a healer, but don't want to be a priest. :). priests are hard for me. pallies mode of attack is just better for me. I generally only play her with rest bonus, levelling as holy isn't as hard as I thought it would be.

Can't comment much on soloing, never got a mage past 17 now. But I have a high level main, and many, many alts I have tried.

A lot of it depends on playstyle. rogues were very difficult for me. Took too much damage. If a fight went wrong, it went very wrong. Granted I didn't have vanish at the time... Of course, that can be true for mages as well, but at least I'm at range. Hunters are the most forgiving. If fights go wrong, usually just the pet dies, the hunter can run away. I just switched my warlock over to affliction for drain tanking. mana consumption can be a bit scary at times as I don't have dark pact yet. but with life draining, I feel like I can survive alot. Though demonology was "safer", it wasn't as fun or satisfying.

For me (differes with others I know)

best solo
warlock
hunter

so-so
paladin
mage
shaman
warrior

hard
priest
rogue
druid

druid is probably one of the easiest classes to solo with - just specc feral. I'll admit that until lvl 20 it's boring as hell but from that point things drop fast and you got 0 downtime at all.

Any version of the below will work:

Try to get target at long range.

Cast a frostbolt (this slows it).

Cast a fireball as it charges you.

Cast fireblast.

Frost Nova and move away.

Fireball and fireblast or wand til it's dead.

----

That's just one way. Many combinations of the above work very well. Mages are often called "glass cannons" - you dont' want meleers to get on you. You want to be at range blasting your enemies. That's how mages do it. GL.

I think that your order is a bit wrong.

I would order it like this:

Easiest to Hardest:
Hunter
Warlock
Mage
Druid
Rogue
Shadow Priest
Shaman
Paladin
Warrior

I just don't understand why the guy titled the thread "Mages are worst solo'ist" instead of "I suck at mage". It might have been more accurate.

Not trying to be a jerk... but think before you post.

Druid levelling is actually very easy.

I agree with Anobix's list.

After playing a beta warrior and then leveling another warrior to 70, plus having an alt of every kind... I'd say no. With a mage you rarely should be in melee range of anything and any range mobs you can out dps. Yeah you have to stop and drink now and then, but since you make your own water, this is also not a big issue. The only time I'm near a town with my mage is to vendor and turn in.

Having played all but a rogue (got him up to 19 but found feral druid satisfies my rogue appetite :) ) up to reasonable levels 90%+ solo I agree with the list by Anobix.

It is all about style for each class and spec. Once you learn how to use the skills that come with class/spec then soloing turns out to be pretty easy. My shadow priest soloed (barely) a level 43 elite at level 40 which I would expect my hunter or warlock or mage or feral druid to do as well with differing levels of success. I understand how to level a paladin but ZZZZZZZZZ. Warrior is the toughest right now but I am trying. No escape nor special helps (like druid heals).

Learn the strengths and weaknesses of your class. mage fire pulls from a long distance (41 yards) with pyroblast (6 second cast doesn't matter before the pull) and gets in 2 fireballs before the mob can close, 1 fireblast, then frost shock/blink, frostbolt/fireball if not dead yet. Mage frost is different (frostbolt, ....) but just as effective. Concentrate on humanoid and beast mobs as your CC (sheep) works on them. There are lots of quests and camps for humanoids/beasts pretty much the entire way (though Hellfire is full of daemons and that is tougher for mages -> easy for warlocks though).

as for druid it was my first char, I was very noob, so I did struggle. things did get easier after 20. I ended up deleting my char at 30 though as I switched to a hunter as my main. I recently created a tauren druid (I have fallen in love with the horde- I only have one ally now on another server). but he's only 17 now. It just sucks until 20.

I'd probably put rogues a little higher. Druids a little lower.

(1) Hunter
(2) Rogue, Warlock
(3) Mage
(4) Shaman, Druid, Shadow Priest
(5) Paladin
(6) Warrior

Thats been my experience at least.
