first: i'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, and if so please provide a link? thanks.

second: yes i've read petopia, but what i'm looking for is your personal experience/opinion regarding gorillas as pets.

are they good? reliable? viable in PvP? yes, there are probably better pets out there... i.e. cats for DPS, and boars/bears for tanks. i'll probably end up getting an ape, even if it's just for show/fun. but i wanted to have my fellow hunters' opinions on how good they are in game, both PvP and PvE (more so PvP however). thanks. :)

Apes are not actually bad at all. Decent dmg + armor and that aoe tanking can be quite useful, but the fact that you have little to no variety in good pet food in the higher levels make Apes a choice that people pass on.

Excellent alternative = Carrion Bird

Heya,

So, I've had an Ape since I hit 32 and tamed him in STV. I've been nothing but pleased with him all this time. (28 levels) As a warning though, if you have awesome gear or are more of a MM build, it can get really easy to pull aggro if you are not careful.

In mind with family stats, personally I've trained mine to have the max Great Stamina rank I can, then Thunderstomp Rank 3, Bite Rank ? (don'r remember, I do know that I have to get it updated though) and Growl max rank. This left me just enough TP's to get some Resistances (think I did Shadow and Frost cause those spells suck) and a little bit of an Armor boost.

Your mileage might vary due to differences in build and all that, but the best advice I can give you in regards to the Apes is make sure that you can stand their sounds, actions, and attacks. Nothing is worse then having a pet that you spent a lot of time in when you really don't like the pet itself. Other than that, have fun and hope this helps.

Wow...we need more replies like this one. I mean...it's gotta be the best response I've ever seen. I'm serious, if I could rate-up, I'd rate you up for that, and then create another account, get my rating up there, just so I could rate this up again. NICE work shaunshaun. I bow down to you. I can't believe someone could come up with a response that brilliant. My hat's off to you. Congratulations. Seriously...this response deserves an award for "best post ever." This is sticky material, I mean it. Lets put this up as a sticky. Let's even make you the ruler of the forums, for that brilliant piece of intellegence you have given us.

I've thought about getting an ape for AoE tanking and multishot grinding but, to be honest, their diet is far too fussy to suit me. I mean, I'm sure you can get it if you're pressed but the only place I know of that sells fruit is STV Imports in Org..and having to go there everytime you need pet food gets cumbersome.

To answer the OP tho, I think that they are excellent for general tanking..I have not used apes in PvP but I think that they would be as good as any other pet, IMO.

Here's a trick I've seen mentioned, buy a TON of fruit, mail it to an alt, and have the alt mail it back. Now, mailbox = uber storage space. Go to the inn, you got fruit!

For AoE, keep in mind you got a few other options, maybe not better than a gorilla - just a different play style.
1. Dragonhawk - wouldn't recommend these until you get to the uber high levels for the non-casters.
2. Bat/Carrion Bird/Owl - I prefer bats, some prefer CB's, some prefer owls, screech is sworn by by some hunters.
3. Wolf - great for groups, or if you fight at the 8-15 yard level (I fight at 41 yards so I dont use a wolf very often).
4. Gorilla - uh, the thread topic.

IMO the best aggro-holder is the bat. It's got bite and screech, and higher DPS than the other bird that can learn bite (I'm thinking CB but it might be owl). But, I have no experience with a gorilla, and as long as you start fights with TS, it should be good. The only drawback to them is the 1-minute CD, although if you're using an AoE then the fight duration + the down time might work out to be about that.

Seeing as you seem to take particular interest in PvP, I have to add that in my (admittedly limited) experience, a flying pet is superb for PvP. They get right up in your opponent's face, they're a ***** to target past. They also come with a nice AoE melee debuff, which doubles up as an AoE taunt when PvE-ing. Their diet is also a lot easier to cater for.

If you like apes, and it sounds like you're gonna get one anyway. Go ahead, the best pet is the one you have most fun with.

I've had a gorilla for some time now and I speak about my experiences in PvE. , I'd say thunderstom is excellent skill to have. I can use volley/multishot and then thunderstomp and won't get the aggro. However, be very carefull with this skill.

The trick skribs mentioned above is handy. However I havent used it. I normally carry some 40 pumpkins in my bag. You could say I waste 2 slots but I've normally plenty of room since I regurally sent stuff worth of selling/saving to my bank alt.

However, I havent been SO pleased with my gorilla, his a bit Sir Diesalot. With thunderstomp he normally has more people chopping him than what my wolf used to have though. And my skill placement somewhat sucks.

If you've room in your stable I'd say you should try them out. Especially the brown ones. Personally I wan't to have one around but I think I'll use my wolf more for now on.

Hope this helps a bit

yes, this is true... and i know it's been spammed in this forum a LOT. and i do have my "main" pet that i LOVE... humar :D. he's definitely the one i use the most, and probably always will be.

i did try the ape, and honestly didn't like him so much. may be i'm just used to the DPS i get from the cat. so i have my beloved humar and am just training others for the new skills. eventually i might add another, but for now i'm more than happy with what i have. :)

Ok,

Food. Save yourself a ton of hassle and keep in mind that gorillas eat fungus too. There are Mushroom Vendors both in Ogrimmar and Undercity. The gorilla will eat these til at least 60 since I'm still feeding mine Dried King Bolete for the full +35 Happiness.

If you are going for multiple aggro holds to use multi shot then an Ape is a great pet, as long as you do not mind the food hassle potential. Personally, for single PvE and PvP I prefer scorpions. They can hold great amounts of aggro and are fairly heavy dps'ers for long battles thanks to scorpid poison. At rank 2 you are adding 10+ (not sure of the exact dps) dps to their base attacks with a 5 stack of poison which puts at the same level as any other pet out there for single dps. Add in Growl and I have to TRY to gain aggro from my pet... Basically only way is to get a couple of multiple crit strings together. Anyways, that is my opinion as I tried a Gorilla and did not really like it, and with regards to Cats I did not see much damage improvement over my Scorpid, so I went back to the Scorpid as there was significant difference in my need to heal / feed my pet.

As a boar enthusiast (if you've never tried one, you should - hey, take advantage of the stables and try lots of pets), I used to bang the "apes are among the tricky diet pets, hard to feed - beware" gong.

I don't any more. It's pretty easy to have plenty of fruit. Just overbuy stacks of it, mail it to an alt or friend, mail them back to your hunter. Anyplace you can find a mailbox you can get fruit for your pet. Mailboxes are everywhere, fruit venders adn banks aren't. Stuff stays in mailbox 30 days (or 29).

Feeding the monkey isn't the real problem: his slow land speed is.

Apes do not get Dash. The fastest you can make him go in combat is +30%.

The real problem w/ apes is that they are slow. Birds get AoE. And Dive.

yeah i have a boar for my BG hunter twink, and i like the charge feature for it... great for WSG in catching the flag carrier :)

but on my main hunter i have always had a cat... and humar, i just can't seem to leave him in the stable lol.

i'll probably end up with a cat for my twink as well, but will keep the boar for BGs, etc.
