Hi,

Im not a hunter yet and I just ordered wow from ebay.

I want to be a hunter because it looks cool, and I just left ffxi, I was a drg.

I want to know a few things:

1. Are hunters a really expensive class to play because of the cost of arrows?

2. Do most of you fletch and is that hard?

3. Is this a good class to start with?

4. Can you have a good hunter build without a pet? I mean without concentrating too much on the pet at all?

5. I want to be a hunter for the cool factor, so I dont want to use guns. . . will that make me gimped?

Thanks for any replies!

let me be the first to happly awnser you questions

1. Are hunters a really expensive class to play because of the cost of arrows? No, arrows are not expensive especialy at the lower levels and they come in stacks of 200 so you dont find that runnign out is a issue unless you are careless

2. Do most of you fletch and is that hard? No, currently their is no way to fletch arrows, they must all be purchased from vendors

3. Is this a good class to start with? Yes,Hunters are affordable chars, since the pet takes most of the dammage(idealy) you are not stuck with huge repair bills, and hunters are one of the best solo folks in the game... so you have time to make freinds and connections

4. Can you have a good hunter build without a pet? I mean without concentrating too much on the pet at all? realisticly ..No, the min range on guns/bows makes not having a pet almost impossible(they are so intatgrated to the char)you pet is fun i cant immigin not wanting it... you can dismiss it and walk arround without it..but in a fight it would be silly to not have it.

5. I want to be a hunter for the cool factor, so I dont want to use guns. . . will that make me gimped? Well i use guns and i am super cool but you dont have to,guns/xbows/bows have close to the same Dammage so not using one or the other wont kill ya or make ya godly. Note you asked about Fletching and brought up guns, you cannot fletch but you can make bullets so guns have alittle advantage that curretnly a hunter or freind that has engenering can make bullets better than any vendor in the game can sell, before long (according to a bliz post) their will be a vendor that will trade the gun users wonderfull super shot in for a comprable arrow.

Yes join the hunter ranks and enjoy... bows do look cool and make less noise, but i love my guns(looks cool to be a NE with a gun)

I'm not sure to what exactly you refer. What Capitolg explained is one way of interpreting the question. However, I'm not sure if you are referring to the talent speccing of Hunters.

We can invest talent points in three different trees. Namely: 1)Beastmastery, 2)Marksmanship, and 3)Survival. Like the name implies Beastmastery talents are all about improving your pet stats. Marksmanship is related to your damage output, and Survival to your ability to live longer through harder fights.

If you do not want to invest talent points on your pet, you don't have to. You can definitely invest your points in the Marksmanship or Survival trees.

However, take note that certain speccs are better suited for the type of server you are playing in. For example, it is commonly accepted that a Beastmaster specced Hunter is best suited for a PvE server. (I play in a PvE server and I'm Marksman specced, just because I like to drool at my damage output ^.~)

So to answer your question. Yes, you can make a good build for your Hunter that does not consider the pet. Nonetheless, it will depend greatly on your playstyle and what you want your Hunter to be at end-game.

One thing to be added:

You can respec anytime, just go to a hunter trainer and for a payment you can get back all talentpoints and redistribute. But with each time you do that the cost for it goes up.

The only thing I'd add/clarify (my comrades above did marvelous ^_^ ) is in regards to your pet and talent points I'd recomend putting points in hp's at least. The 10% hp increase may not seem much but when they have 1500 hps its very helpful =)

lol, so funny, i was a lvl 55 DRG on ffxi too, and the only reason i quit is cause my cousin played WoW. I am so glad i did. ffxi took FOREVER to do anything. So annoying. I ended up giving some guy my dual sniper rings, my valk mask, my leaping boots, and 48,000 gil haha. Lucky him.

Yeah I haven't had any troubles w/ money on my 49 hunter... is nice, considering that I as well played a drg up to 52 on FFXI... and than a rng up to 51 before I got tired of the hours of repetitive grinding. It's nice to actually have a choice to grind or not ^^

Skilling up is soooooo easy, in the beginning of training a new weapon you basically get a skillup every shot (or miss actually). So basically you see this.

Your auto-shot misses big-***-mob.
Your skill in Bows has increased to 2.
Your auto-shot misses big-***-mob.
Your skill in Bows has increased to 3.
Your auto-shot misses big-***-mob.
Your skill in Bows has increased to 4.
Your auto-shot misses big-***-mob.
Your skill in Bows has increased to 5.
Etc......

Untill you're getting close to the cap, then it slows down a little. Skilling up is fun :)

K IMO I personally think that you should go with a different class atm. Sure hunters are a great class to play and easy at fact, they dont cost as much as you would think but atm there are so many bugs with Hunters. Also hunters are not a needed class in End Game areas we will always be passed on over another class from my experiances.

Heres a Thread i think you should check out before you jump into the Hunter class ATM I'm a 60 hunter and I love playing my hunter but if i could i would glady trade my char for a Priest or Mage or something more usefull in End Game Instances.

Ive found that hunters are extremely thrifty.

Your archery is your bread and butter, so you should always buy the bext bow/arrows you can afford. But other than that, you dont get beat on (or rather you SHOULDNT be getting beat on) so you dont realy need to buy food/hp potions and you can skip First Aid and cooking. the only food youll need is petfood which youll be getting while hunting. Learning how mana regeneration works makes needing to buy drink/mana potions obsolete.

A hunter is alsop not dependant on gear like tank classes or casters who need larger mana pools/regen.

A hunter with nothing but their pet, a bow, quiver and arrows can take down the same xp_mob_01 as a hunter in full top-end gear. It will just take him a little longer/more arrows.

Hunters are a very good class to start with because the mechanics are simple and its easy to escape bad situations.

This has an inherent drawback: Overpopulation/undesirablility.

Theres no difference between guns and bows except the noise. Use what you like.

Ok there is one difference. Some guns and ammo can be made by the engineering tradeksill. There is no way to make a bow/arrows yet in the game.

But if you are looking for cool factor, make a Priest, and be a good one. Everyone will be your friend, and you will be very popular. =)
