Hi,
I'm fairly new to the game... Installed it and created my character fine... loads up fine... but as soon as I go to leave the area you start in it just crashes on me... I am using Vista ... any ideas would be handy please as i really just want to start playing the game but have had no luck as of yet!

Not a clue myself, but it might be best if you also add your computer specs. Processor, RAM and vid card are pretty important parts.
Apart from my vid card acting up once and not after a single reboot, I've found that the game itself no longer seems to crash after 1hour and a half of playing (as it used to), so I'm guessing that the game itself is pretty stable these days.
Still, plenty of computer savvy posters here, perhaps with a bit more info, they might be able to help you out.

What version of Vista are you running? Also, what error messages do you get (if any) when it crashes?

How are you logged in? As administrator type account or standard user? What programs are running in the background? For example - Norton, Roxio, IE, Firefox, Quickbooks etc.
With the enhanced security on Vista, it is possible that the crash is due to a security setting. Vista does not allow some applications to write to the hard drive without permission so that may be part of the problem. Ran into this on a user machine running Paradox not too long ago.

nVidia cards and Vista don't like each other much currently, and apparently nVidia has been a little slow to address the issue by updating their drivers. I'm certainly not bashing nVidia, as they were the maker of every video card I've ever owned up until a month ago, and this problem with their drivers may have been resolved by now, because the article I read about the problem in was in the latest issue of Games For Windows.
