I am a veteran Eve Online player who stopped playing that game and sold my two accounts after the game went poo to get into something different - THIS - I love SWG and have few gripes with it - but ALL of my gripes are to do with the fact that I not on a suitable server.
Unfortunately for me, I am in the UK, and one night when I was having a sleepless night last December, I downloaded and installed SWG, then registered on the server that was at the top of the list - Tarquinas (recommended) I didn't even notice the Europe-Chimera server on the list, in fact I recently created a second character purely as a test, again at 4.30am GMT, and yes, the Euro servers were at the bottom of the list and were deemed to be population = scarce!
I feel like a bit of a noob now, because I enjoyed playing alone for the 4 months it took me to wind my way up to being a lvl 90 commando, and never really interacted with anyone around me and consequently didn't notice a problem. It was only when I became lvl 90 and I started needing to play with other users (mainly in Restuss battles) I realised I was one of the few UK players on the server. I have been in three guilds up to now, the first two I left because there was never anyone on when I was on, the one I am in now has about 10 members but when I get to 11pm GMT (my time), the other guys are usually just getting in from work/school and I have problems playing with them.
I have searched high and low on Tarquinas server for a Euro guild, to no avail. I have used the web forums that are out there and even set up an advertising macro recently in Mos Eisley asking anyone in a UK/Euro guild to mail me so I could join up - no one replied despite the macro running for 6 hours.
I sent an email to the admin explaining that I had mistakenly started my character up on the wrong server, to be told that I would have to pay $50 (?25GBP) to transfer my character (that's one character at a time for $50 btw) which I feel a little bitter about. Mainly because they can see from my account information that I am in the UK and that I am on a server populated mostly by people in the US.
I stopped playing Eve Online after I spent two years building up a 2 billion isk fortune all on my own, to lose it all in the blink of an eye when I foolishly tried to move my assets (4 x 500 mil isk BPOs) through 0.0 space and was blown up. I always swore that if anything like that ever happened it would not have been worth continuing to play, and I did indeed stop playing. One of the problems with Eve Online is that the game became so ridiculously unfair. You spent what seemed like a lifetime trying to make your mark in the universe, and then CCP went and introduced Interdictors and warp disruptor probes into the game making it a doddle for other players to take everything from you with no comeback. Eve is a stressful and unenjoyable experience to play seriously, whether you played solo or in a group. So, I stopped giving CCP my $30 a month because they made the game crap, and took it elsewhere. I like SWG because it's relatively risk free in relation to assets and credits, but it still takes a lot of time to work your way up and earn credits if you are a serious player. (entertainers aside)
But that said , if I am seriously expected by the admin to put $50 into their already fat real life wallet so they can inconvenience themselves by pushing a button to have my character and his Crusader armour transferred to Chimaera, just because I pushed the WRONG button when I set up a monthly direct debit to them, well, that's not right in my view. If I had upset a lot of people on Tarquinas or had a bad reputation due to mischief and wanted to move servers to get away from them I wouldn't feel so aggrieved.
I will not spend another four months (or probably more now since chap 6) grinding another character on Chimaera - it is not worth it, and I may leave soon. I started playing WarRock a couple of weeks ago - full of hackers but still fun, and hopefully Star Trek Online may be released sometime before 2010!
DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK $50 IS A RIP OFF OR SHOULD I SHUT UP AND GO AND PLAY SOMETHING ELSE IF I DON'T LIKE HOW THINGS ARE? Please let me know
Also if anyone knows of a Euro corp/guild on Tarquinas I'd be grateful for the info :)
