sounds like a weird one, only advice i can give, is make sure you have all the latest drivers for you graphics and sound cards, and that directx is up to date. if you have something like norton av, then you might want to disable that too, for information on router configurations you can check the official website, which should explain which ports need to be open etc. failing that, make sure there are no programs running in the background that might be interfering, like limewire etc.

If you are not using a router when connecting this issue is more than likely being caused by NIC drivers or the NIC itself.NIC(Network Interface Card)If you are using broadband this is what the PC uses to connect to the internet or the USB drivers of the modem. Either way....that is more than likely your issue. Norton would block you and keep you blocked not letting the connection through at all until you disable it or even when you disable it it doesn't completely turn off, and at that point the only thing you can do is uninstall and then reinstall it if so desired. If you are running XP just go into the "Device manager" find your "Network Adapters" find the ethnernet card or modem drivers...highlight and right click and uninstall and then reboot.....XP will reinstall the drivers automaticlly. If Vista...you are on your own....Vista still does not have all the drivers for the new high end gear let alone old stuff. If you are running older version of windows keep the driver disk handy it will ask for it when it's ready and you feed it to the PC. Mac....dude call Mac...it could be anything on the Mac becaues it usually doesn't get the junk windows does or is even compatible at all. I'm not even sure if they have SWG for Mac but I'd thought I would metion it. If you use a dial up for whatever reason....wouldn't think you try this with this type of game, but if you are...delete and recreate your dial up connection. Clouddancer hit on a very important point though.....Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa ect......these are the bane of all connections in existance. They caues more intermittent connectivity issue than any other problem encoutered....from spyware to downloads sucking up the bandwithe....sharing kills you the most...uploads never match the downloads speeds. Well....thats all I can think of sitting here at work. I will think of more when I get home as usual.....I hope this helps.
