What's this game got going for it?

You probably won't get many replies seeing how this forum isn't showing up on the site list yet, but if you're really interested then I'd go look at some of the affiliate sites: http://www.vanguardsoh.com/fansite.php
- particularly silky venom or ten ton hammer unless you're a crafter or roleplayer or have a particular class bias. Both SV and TTH have good FAQs/wiki/guides to Vanguard.

I'm sure most posters here will have their own opinions - and you can take as much notice as you wish. The most simplistic synopsis is it's more a sequel to EQ than a WOW clone. However since the game is due for release around 30th Jan you don't have to wait much longer to see reviews popping up in all the usual places. Personally I'll be installing it as soon as the pre-ordered disk arrives on the doormat.

I wouldn't post about Vanguard here anyway, as they are giving it no attention.

Allah seem to be more prone to adding LOTR. But to be honest, they could just copy all the WoW content and just re-name a couple of things....lol

Not that it matters much, but I am dropping WoW and moving to Vanguard. If Allakhazam doesn't want to host an online community for it then I guess my $$ wont be going to this site anymore. I am soooooo bored with that game I can't even bring myself to log on a give my stuff away (and I have a full stack of arcanite crystals as well as many arcanite bars). My wife just cancelled her account.

I started on beta 4 (now 5). I see a lot of good stuff from EQ and WoW in the game. As with any beta there are lots of bugs to be worked out (heck, every time you turn on your computer and boot to Windows, your beta testing the OS). With in this past week, they have worked out stability issues and have been stress-testing the servers. The only thing that sucks is that I will not be able to transfer my beta toons to the live servers at the end of this month.

It is a shame that Allakhazam is dragging their butts on adding Vanguard to their site. I have depended on them since the weee early days of EQ.

As soon as it will be clear, whether Vanguard will be a success or a flop, Alla should react to the market.

At the moment there seems to be a great intrest in this game specially on old-school players. If Alla waits to long - and Vanguard performs well - there are a lot of other sites, that deliver the service Alla do (very ewell) for EQ, WoW and the other MMO covered here.

I have canceled my WoW account because of Vanguard, nerfing my Broken Tooth pet 3 weeks after I was lucky enough to solo capture it was just enough to push me over the edge. I have been running Vanguard since Beta 3 and although it is still a work in progress I am very happy with it. I will be keeping my EQ accounts so I can keep raiding with my guild though.

They have a community for Everquest online adventures. Even if vanguard flops there will probably be one for it too.

On gamestop website they said they will give you 30-days of premium membership if you order Vanguard from them. As seeing it being released on the 30th and "up to 3 days" in advance if you pre-order, Alla really doesn't have much info on it. And my guess is if players already don't have premium access here, then a 30-day premium access that comes with buying Vanguard will be useless to them since they won't find any info about the game here.

Hoping if an Admin can shed some light on that. Been premium member for many years since EQ1, even tho i haven't used it for a while but I'm still paying for it hoping one day I'll be able to use it again. And hoping the day I use it is for Vanguard and Warhammer online.

Ummm, why is there virtually no coverage here about Vanguard. Over the years I've left EQ and returned, left and returned....but always kept my subscription to Alla. The dependability, stability, reliable information, and overall great service kept me coming back. Sadly, I may have to consider dropping my subscription as I'm going to spend all my game time in Vanguard. I wish that someone would step up to the plate and offer to take on the role of VSOH correspondent.

Hopefully they'll get going soon. I can't wait to get started on the game. After spending a lot of time in the beta I'm thrilled that it delivers everything I hoped for and then some. If kazaam doesn't add VG to their list of games I'll be mighty grumpy. =P

I'll try to explain the reasoning behind this being our only Vanguard presence for the moment.

1. While we have expanded a lot over the past couple years, we are still a small staff. We only have four full time programmers. It's my job to decide what is the best way to utilize them. Vanguard is coming out 2 weeks after the game that sold more copies in 24 hours than any game in history. Clearly, from a business standpoing, our first priority was to make sure our WoW site was ready for their expansion.

2. Lord of the Rings Online comes out in a couple months as well. For the resources we have not devoted to WoW, we had to decide whether to do one site or both. We ultimately decided to put our resources into LOTRO instead of Vanguard. This was due to several factors. First, I played both and simply think LOTRO is better. When games like Horizons and Shadowbane came out there were threads begging us to do sites for them too and after playing them I decided it would be a waste of time on our part. Second, Turbine has given us plenty of access to their game to get all our programers into it and enough other staff members that we can have a lot of people working on it to make a top notch site. They also will help promote the site as one of their fan sites. I refuse to make a site that is not excellent. Sigil on the other hand has actually kicked some of our staff members out of their beta, leaving us with only 2 actual beta accounts amongst our entire staff. One was mine, and I had to share my access with our programmers just to give them a look at it. We are all gamers and love playing MMOs, and we develop the sites for ourselves with the idea that if we like it so will the other players. For every game we cover, we have several people who have played it to a high level. It is hard to develop a site for a game you don't play, and we were just not able to play much of Vanguard. Add to that Sigil's insistance that they will not link us from their site and will delete forum posts mentioning us, and it makes it that much harder to develop a site for Vanguard, and makes less business sense for us to devote precious resources to it.

Sigil's position on us is wrong. Anyone who uses our site knows that we have no ads or promotions of any kind for gold selling and in fact ban all forum posters who promote gold selling. While we don't require the cooperation of the game developer to make a site for a game (old EQ vets will recall that Brad McQuaid absolutely hated our site when it was first launched and SOE at first wanted nothing to do with us), the active opposition of a developer makes it harder for us to do so and thus more likely to just skip past a mediocre game. Frankly, if Vanguard kicked *** we would have done whatever we needed to do to develop a site, but given what it actually is, it was just not worth the hassle.

When the game comes out, I will re-evaluate our position. Hopefully for the players sake, someone will step up and build the type of site we normally build. Then we can just refer you all to them. While I hate to lose you while you play Vanguard, I hope you will understand and check back with us for your next game. Of course, you can always use this forum to talk about the game.

Thanks for the explanation Alla.

I'm happy to report that my NEW DE Disciple is up to level 4 and I've experienced no performance issues. The real live game is running beautifully. Of course I haven't yet left the newb yard and the what will happen with the masses that start after the pre-order days are over is still an unknown.

I'd like to be able to come here for Vg info, but will likely still be nosing around anyways. Smiley: tongue

Alla, I want to thank you for your response. I am so used to the EQ Player forums where people post wondering about this that and the other thing, and Sony just acts like the posts don't exist. Your response was very refreshing.

My wife and I have pretty much left EQ. Our accounts have not been cancelled, but we have not played in quite a while, and most likely its just a matter of time before that fateful day.

But I now have a reason to continuing being a member here. If nothing else the price is low enough that its worthwhile checking in here just to keep up on gaming news. I'll just have to find the links to all the different games you cover.

Alla's is currently my home page. Looks like it will stay that way :)

Well, I certainly appreciate your response explaining your position. I caved in an bough the WoW expansion pack, but the boredom is still there...that and my guild, which WAS full of adults, is recruiting every 17 year old there is in the game.

I hope Vanguard takes off. You say LOTR is better than Vanguard? Maybe I should take a peak at their web site.

Looks like they may be doing the site themselfs. No idea if it will be as good as Allakhazms has been for me on Everquest.

#18Lipzipper, Posted: Jan 31 2007 at 9:00 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) sounds to me that alla is just mad for not being treated like gods. I remember when this site actually was a small staff that tried really hard. Now it's a MUCH bigger staff that tries half as hard as it used to.. I for one hope they [alla] don't do anything with Vanguard and someone else does. Dont belive me? Go look at the EQ1 side of alla, then check out WoW... nuff said

aye, vanguard is more like EQ2 than WoW. crafting for instance takes on a whole new meaning to the 6 step program. first you have to get skills up in harvesting "2" items. then, you have to get skills up in refinning "2" skills, then you have to get skills up in crafting "2" types of items.

and like EQ2, there are several things that can happen. make an item, fail on an item, have problems you have to correct while making the item.

then you can get/buy thingies to increase whatever skills you have.

then you can get thingies to increase stats at various stages of the crafting.

THEN, when you get whatever skill up to "100"......you can now move on to the second tier harvesting/refinning/crafting levels. you get to increase every 100 points of whatever skill.

sooo, to basicaly take your primary and secondary skill to the second tier, you need a good 600 skill points in various things to advance so you can now make "level 10" items...........

coarse, if you kill one monster per skill point......you would be level 30 by the time you can make level 10 items.....

wooohoooo, evergrind coming to a town near you.........

needless to say, i probably wont be a crafter. nor a diplomat for that matter. would rather play mariao brothers on my kids netendo ds.

the rest of the game? as good as any other game i guess. places to go, monsters to kill, quests to beg a group to help you complete.....did i mention it is more like EQ2 than WoW?......heh.

graphics are nice, not as good as EQ2, but much better than WoW. plenty of really new stuff to see and do. the first 20 levels in any game are a blast. the best gaming they have to offer IMO.

ill get back to you after level 20 if my openion changes.

Silky Venom - My personal favorite resource
Vanguard Servers - Another one of my more favored resources
Vanguard Spheres
Ausguard - A very, very well made Oceanic Vanguard site
Ten Ton Hammer
Vanguard Vault
Vanguard Interface - For all your custom UI needs.
Vanguard Hispano - For all our fellow spanish speaking adventurers
Vanguard Roleplayers - For all you roleplaying nuts out there
Vangaurd Crafters - A crafter specific site

Class specific Vanguard sites:

Shaman <- Class I play ^_^
Monk
Druid
Rangers
Bloodmages

I hope this helps all who comes to Alla for some Vanguard info. I'm very excited about what this game could be, it's far from reaching that but I'm extremely hopeful. I'm probably not gonna play all that much for a while but I plan on continuing to pay for the service, I want the game to ultimately succeed and I will easily throw in my $15 a month (whether I'm playing or not) to see that it does. A lot of the hardcore Vanboi's in the community really bother me, they're way to extreme and cutthroat, but if the game does succeed we will be able to get more people of a friendly more casual nature in the game which will make it more enjoyable for everyone ^_^.

I do consider myself a Vanboi to an extent, but my fellow compatriots make it hard to accept other people into our community due to there uptight aggressive nature. And I've NEVER played WoW, but if I hear one more VG fan say that "WoW sux" I think I'm gonna punch them in the throat >.<. Anyways I just hope that no one assumed that everyone playing Vanguard at the moment is like that, there are some of us out there that just want to have fun PLAYING the game, but it's hard for us because we're having a hard time convinsing other people with our same mindset to join.

I'm hoping that VG takes off and we can get more people that I personaly want to play with on to the game. As of right now I'm probably not gonna be playing much past the first month unless I start to find some less "1337" people, I will however continue to pay for the service, like I said I want to be able to come back and love this game. And unless the people over at Sigil get there income the bugs are never going to get fixed and the game will never have a chance, and I just can't stand for that ^_^. This post ended up longer then I intended, my apologies =P.

Alot of work goes into this site. You guys don't get enough credit. Perhaps in the future you may put together something for Vanguard.

Hell even a links page would be nice with this forum attached, and an "Under Consideration" sign.
