so i got this email earlier today (obviously a phishing mail)

Greetings!

In order to make our servers more efficient, we are taking the time to remove inactive accounts. We are mass mailing all email addresses registered to World of Warcraft accounts to target those that are inactive. If you are currently active in the World of Warcraft, or plan on picking up where you left off the in the future, please continue reading. If you do not foresee yourself ever rejoining us, please disregard this message.

Please take a moment and login to your account (obvious fake blizzard site) to verify and maintain your enjoyable gameplay experience.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter, and your continued interest in World of Warcraft.

Sincerely,

Blizzard Entertainment

I admit it looks rather professional (but honestly would blizzard want me to stop paying them even if i wasnt playing?)

They're* (I just had to do it)

Anywho, what's even better is that these phishers send emails to all of my email accounts in regards to WoW... but my WoW email.

Due to a lot of issues with my emails getting a bunch of spam, I've resorted to having a separate one just for WoW. Seems to help so far.

But you're right, it does seem pretty professional compared to previous ones.

Which could mean they don't get user email addresses from blizzard. There must be other wow sites that you have registered to or messaged...

I got a Cataclysm Beta invite that really looked good, much better than any other phishing email I've seen. The link was not blizzard.com else I would have clicked it.

While it's important that we keep people informed about phishing scams and such, we now have five (5) threads about scam mails on the first page. I'm seeing more scam mails on this board than in my inbox at the moment.

for the longest time I never got one. And then one day on an email that had no linkage to my WoW account say an email from "Blizzard". The English within was so mind boggling that I felt myself getting stupider the more I tried to read it.

I've now had a few of these.

I kind of wish I had been left out, if Blizzard REALLY wanted to contact you while you still played the game, one would think a GM would send you a GM Message in-game. Not a in-game mail or fake emails.

A phisher messaged me in game with some weird Blizz name saying yada yada cata beta go to this website to get hacked. I replied with "What do I get if I do it," to my surprise he said "wat?" I never knew those were people, I thought they were bots. So I told him "Well I want to go to the site but my walrus ate my browser and won't give me back my shoe strings." He just sent the phishing message again and wouldn't reply to any more of my ridiculous whispers. :(

This is actually a valid question. I was ready to start raging about Bnet forcing me to use my e-mail as my account log-in, but you've just reminded me that it can't be that - my other completely wow-unrelated e-mail adress also gets these mails.

That said, as a reminder to everyone, the last Cataclysm beta mail batch seems to say something along the lines of "you wouldn't want to be left out in the cold of northrend when you could be enjoying the sun on a Kezan beach!". If your 'beta invite' looks like that, I can give you a 99% guarantee that it's a phishing mail.

Was the lack of capitalization and punctuation intentional as well? =P

The benefits of being a native English (technically American here) speaker makes identifying scams so much easier...

Unfortunately, there's still those select few that fall for it, and with their messages getting more believeable (such as the above), it'll be harder for more people to catch them.

My suggestion is that if anyone is uncertain about something, just go to the main site yourself and check from there instead of going through the link provided.

Yes, I'm getting annoyed by all of the phishing spam that I keep getting here. Smiley: tongue

Hmm, spam... that reminds me, I haven't had lunch yet.

They send them out at random. My friend has never played WoW and he's getting these scam emails as often as I am. I've even had a couple of scam emails for Age of Conan and, on one occasion for Lord of the Rings, and I've never played either of those.

So arrogant.

I've seen far too many native speakers fail majorly at English in every possible way.

This. The only reason why it seems like they're targeting WoW players' emails specifically is that people who don't play WoW aren't posting here about their phishing emails, obviously.

Heh.

Just because you can speak it... doesn't mean you "get" it. Also, speaking english doesn't mean you can read/write/speak english very well or even comprehend it.

Take me as an example, if you will....

I have taken some form of english class from first grade up through four years of college, and I still have no clue how and when to use commas correctly every single time.

But... wouldn't any language have the same problems? I don't know of any language that is so clear-cut to a point that no one would ever make a mistake somewhere.

What I was saying was that I know quite a few people who aren't native speakers in English and are still better at it than most native speakers.

The same goes for German; two of the people with the best knowledge of and 'feel' for the German language I've ever met started learning it as adults.

I acknowledge that you're more likely to be good at a language as a native speaker but I see far too many people making it sound like non-native speakers all fail at it badly on here.

Facebook reminds me on a daily basis that being born into a language does not constitute being good at it. Sure, most people who were born English can speak it without having to actually think about it, as can most "natives". But in writing, some of them look like they just hit random keys on the keyboard until it somewhat resembled a coherent message.

The written language is being butchered something fierce. The whole 'IM speak' didn't help either. Ohai wer r u 2nite? C u l8r?

Back in high school when I was taking Spanish I easily got A's and my grammar was excellent while the native speakers in the same classes often struggled to get C's. When learning a second (or third, 日本語 for me), people generally pay more attention to the rules that govern the language than they do for the language they speak natively.

That said, by being exposed to the written language (I'm talking books here, not text speak as a previous poster mentioned) I feel that I have developed an at least somewhat reliable intuition about general spelling and grammar mistakes. Naturally, the more obscure things will sometimes slip by, and I make minor mistakes just as much as anyone else, but I usually have a feeling that something isn't right even if I don't necessarily know exactly what the correct usage is.

Also, languages are totally sweet. I wish I had been able to start learning multiple languages at a much earlier age (first Spanish class in 10th grade is less than ideal...).

In a stupid-ironic way, it makes sense, though. English people aren't required to put in any effort to speak English, so it's easier for them to stop doing so. Even if your English is awesome, as a foreigner you'll be continuously challenged when talking English.

It's like you really want popcorn, but the popcorn is on the other side of the couch. If you *really* want popcorn, you'll keep reaching over anyway. If you're English, the popcorn's glued to your chest.

Nope, in 5 years of WoW I've never received scam emails. I've only recently started getting /w goldsellers too.
