I just found this in my E-mail Inbox:

Quote:

***Notice of Account Closure***

Account Name: xxx@xxx.ca

Reason for Closure: Terms of Use Violation -- Exploitative Activity: Abuse of the Economy

This account was closed because one or more characters were identified exchanging, or contributing to the exchange of, in-game property (items or gold) for "real-world" currency. This exchange process negatively impacts the World of Warcraft game environment by detracting from the value of the in-game economy.

Even if this behavior is the result of a third party accessing the account instead of the registered user (for example, a friend, family member, or leveling service) then the account can still be held responsible for the penalty because of the impact it had on the game environment.

We've found the above behavior is many times directly related to groups responsible for compromising World of Warcraft accounts; we take these issues very seriously. To better understand our position against exploitative activity and the risks involved, please visit: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/antigold.html

The exploitative activity that took place on this account violates the World of Warcraft Terms of Use. We ask you take a moment to review these terms at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html. Any recurring subscriptions on this account have been suspended to prevent further monetary charges.

For any disputes of this action, please visit the Exploitative Activity FAQ and Contact page here: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/exploitfaq

The only problem is, I've never played WoW or even had an account? I'm confused.

I feel for ya man... I, too, have been banned from WoW, not actually having an account. Aion too for that matter.

It's kinda funny actually. You can follow that link they give you (with the proper e-protection), put in some pretty nasty things for the username/password, and it just pretends to accept it no matter what.

Phishing e-mails are not uncommon. That looks to be one of the better ones going around. Lately they've been poorly translated attempts to get you to log in and verify something in order to keep from having your account closed. Wouldn't surprise me if some crafty RMT fellows got one of those as a legit e-mail from Blizzard and opted to cut/paste it and make a subtle URL change.

The URLs in what's posted here are to the legitimate sites for the game. I wonder if the html in the actual email was coded to take you somewhere else.
They're a crafty lot, those phishers.
Either way, I'd delete the email. Smiley: smile

Blizzard most likely didn't send it. It stinks of a phishing e-mail, but Pluelf left before we could sort out the details. The only way to confirm whether it was or not would be for him to tell us what the sender e-mail address was and to verify that the links go to where it says they go.

I thought I was the only one. I found it really odd because the only MMO I've played is FFXI and the E-mail didn't even go to the E-mail address that I used for FFXI.
Of course I figured it was phishing, but it was still surprising.

The only problem is, it isn't FFXIV related or even mentions FFXIV? I'm confused.

This is an example of one of the more common types people get:

Never underestimate the lengths to which people will go in this corner of the ZAM network to try and discredit Blizzard.

They don't care. The way they see it, if they cast a wide enough net they'll catch what they're looking for, even if it means they get a bunch of junk fish in the process.

Usually you can tell if it's a phish if you look at the email that sent it to you. They'll usually say something like "Blizzard Account Services" as the name but have an email like "steve953@gmail.com".

My non-existent accounts seem to get banned multiple times per day. If they did exist, I assume that I would have quite the reputation ^_*

Had the same thing happen here... Thank god for Firefox! It immediately detected it as a fake website. I even had one for Aion though I've NEVER played Aion. I even looked at the credit card statement to make sure that my card number didn't get stolen... nope, nothing, so I gathered it was only some moron trying to get my account info so they could play/trade my account.

I get banned about 4 or 5 times a day. Though, I discontinued my account last August. Hmmm.

Let me put this as clearly as I can. If you ever get an email for any MMO that you are playing or not playing. Never click on the links. Instead, type in the website and login and send a message to support with an inquiry. FF14 will face this same scam, and many others, when it comes out, if it becomes popular. Of all the mmo's that I have played, wow has the least amount of in game spam for RMT. In fact I haven't seen something like that in wow for about three years. However, email scams are inevitable for anything in life these days. Hopefully FF14 will be locked down also, for in game RMT spam.

When I came back to FFXI 6 months ago, I was constantly spammed IN GAME by RMT, just like the old days. I didn't stay long. Aion has the same issue, and many more in regard to scams or RMT.

actually blizzard isn't too bad. Granted there are many better, but i have seen plenty more terrible services then this. I've received a few e-mails from other games i've never signed up for... but yeah.

Blizzards main problem is that so many people get their accounts hacked. I've had the same password on plenty of other websites and games and it's just a plaintext password no letters or numbers but i've never been hacked. I got hacked once while my account was inactive, in between a 6 month period(so like 3 months inactivity on each end). It was messed up, 2 of my friends have been hacked... it goes on and on.

It's MMO related, meaning it's FFXI/FFXIV related. Think of it as someone warning you about RMT trying to steal your info in any MMO you may play. I've also found one in my email, but for Aion instead(Which I don't have an account for). Sure, FFXIV isn't out yet, but who is to say RMT won't be at it when it does hit the shelves.

I don't think that's why it was posted. I think the OP thought it was an e-mail from Blizzard and came here posting it thinking that it would be worth some lulz in a community that frequently siezes on any/every opportunity to bash WoW and the company behind it. If they were really interested in finding out about it or if they recognized it as a phishing e-mail and were trying to be a good citizen, they would have posted about it on the WoW boards.
