Normally I curse and swear when my game-time runs out because each time I pay my sub, it's labelled as a recurrent six-month payment. Then each time the six months is up, I have to re-enter my billing details, so it's a bit of a bind. However, this story makes me grateful.

I can't imagine how I'd feel after finding I'd been charged 43 times for a six month sub. I really feel sorry for the WAR players at this point - there's so many tales of hardship in that forum.

What I find funny is the people complaining about it not being the first time.

If a company makes that big of a mistake, not a chance in hell I'll be around for it to happen a second time.

I've saw that over the weekend, one guy had 51 or so charges for over $2100.

Aside from the obvious, it's unfortunate because it's a death knell for Mythic. They'll never recover from this.

Lucky for me, it's good ol' THQ doing the 40k MMO so I'll be happy enough.

I can only read threads like that for the first couple of posts. After that it turns from , "Wow...holy crap, Mythic...that's some bad mojo" to, "every second sniveling douchebag in this thread needs therapy."

I try to empathize with them. I really do. Some banks around these here parts charge upwards of $40 for an NSF transaction whether it's a paper cheque or an electronic payment. At the same time, the empathy stops when people start panicking and leveling accusations of criminal behavior and especially (imo) lawsuits. Most people threatening legal action are doing just that...threatening...BS lipservice to something they have neither the resources nor the cajones to follow through on.

As a business owner, if I were to find out that I had overbilled someone for anything at any time, correcting the situation would become my highest priority. Not all businesses are that way, but to assume that simply because an error was made that it was willful criminal behavior is absurd. It's an automated billing system. I doubt there was even any direct user input that forced the multiple charges...if anything, it was a network glitch or a configuration error. Not OK and not cool, but theft and fraud? Please. At worst, negligence. Unless Mythic changed vendors after the first time it happened in 2008, they have to share some of the blame for that negligence but sometimes the dorkrage just goes over the top and I find myself almost wanting the victim to receive no reimbursement at all just to stick it to them for being so ignorant and spouting off like an enraged spider monkey.

Because I'm an *** that way, I suppose.

That was really upsetting to read

So many people that play mmo's live pay check to pay check and a hit like that can be huge
I remember in college I was living pay check to paycheck and being late on the rent means more charges
I just feel for the families effected by this, it's not just a simple billing issue when you're poor

I don't believe this would help you in this case, with my bank it could charge you past what you have in your checking/whatever account type you have and you would be hit with overage charges for every transaction. I think there are a few people who had debit cards in that thread who experienced these difficulties.

Unless my sarcasm detectors are broken, I think that's exactly what he was getting at...

My bank charges at least $20 per overdraft, maybe more. Assuming only 200 dollars in an account, and no other transactions made, 45 charges would not only drain your account but would leave you $475 in debt with $640 dollars in overdraft fees. And people who had less in the bank and/or got charged more times would end up with way more.

I'm assuming banks have some kind of system in place that freezes an account after x overdrafts, so you wouldn't even be able to use your card (and get an overdraft fee) for your purchases.

And their official stance is that, if your bank refuses to reverse the overdraft fees for you, then you should contact their support department and give them the banks phone/fax number.

Yet, there's still no promise to reimburse players if the bank chooses not to reverse the fees. So players could potentially be seeing hundreds of dollars in OD fees because of this.

Frankly, I couldn't blame someone for filing a lawsuit against Mythic for that.

That said, threatening a lawsuit right now is stupid. Wait to see what happens.

[EDIT]

OUCH. Saw one player that got billed with only $45 in his account and ended up with 16 overdraft charges for $30 each. He's now in the -$700 dollar range.

[EDIT2]

Apparently there have been quite a few problems with Mythic billing before now. They said that everything had been fixed, and then this happened. Some people had been charged 60+ times before now. And apparently some closed accounts got charged too. So, if you've ever had an account with them, check your bank statement ASAP.

[EDIT3, because this is more interesting than my Japanese HW]

Mythic may reimburse you for your overdraft fees.

But, in the end, even if no player is out a single dollar because of this, a LOT of people's credit ratings are going to drop.

As long as the charges never make it past pending and the OD fees are reversed, it shouldn't touch their credit. And depending on the bank, as long as it's reimbursed quickly, it shouldn't touch their rating either.

Honestly though, if the bank doesn't block the extra charges and sticks people with the OD fees on what is OBVIOUSLY a billing error, I would got after the bank. The customers had no control over this situation and they aren't authorized charges.
