Quel'Delar - The quest chainFollow

So, finally, after all this damn farming I got to do the Quel'Delar quest chain and have to say I had a blast. Took a couple of hours (I wasn't rushing) and found myself really enjoying the quests for a change. Easily on par with Wrathgate in my opinion. Normally quests are just a means to an end and I don't generally give the stories too much of a read. Quick glance is often good enough. But this time I actually read the emotes, speeches, and quest texts. I didn't actually research the quests like I normally would before setting out. So I went in fresh which really added some of that old-time exploration feel to it. Just like back in the day when I loathed Thottbot so much that I refused to go there anymore.

Predictable storyline in some ways of course, but lore lovers will have a blast and even the more jaded folks among us should find it pretty entertaining if for only the locations (no spoilers!). Especially one location that very few people have gotten to see. Hint: it's perty.

Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else enjoyed this quest chain as much as I did. Or really any quest chain. It's easy to forget that there's a story here when we get all wrapped up in "how much xp/gold" or gear rewards that quests have. I found it rather refreshing to take my time on this one and not just speed through it. Glad I did.

What, if anything, took you out of the "gamer" mindset and put you "in the game," even for just a moment?

Side note: To top of my "new shiny" euphoria I decided to pop into a heroic as DPS, got into a HoR run and was HORRIFIED to see my sub-1k deeps..... should have leveled up 2-hand swords at some point. =(

DOH!

Similar to the feeling I had, when I finally got a Lucky Old Sun, equipped it, and failed to hold aggro on the next trash pull. Whoops.

Thankfully I could swap weapons mid-combat back to the one I was using, and get control of the situation fairly quickly when I saw this in my chatlog:

Your skill with one-handed maces has increased to 2.
Your skill with one-handed maces has increased to 3.
Your skill with one-handed maces has increased to 4.
Your skill with one-handed maces has increased to 5.
Your skill with one-handed maces has increased to 6.
Your skill with one-handed maces has increased to 7.

Within a split second. Then it was "d'oh!"

Yeah, I second that. I also wish they would have let you explore the *rest* of the area (cleared of course), but noooo. They had to put an invisible barrier there that blocks you from exploring.

If only I could get a hilt.
One day people will actually sell them for a Ok amount and not try to make bank of an item that isn't worth 5+k (but then I did buy 2 Terror Tanks for 4k each I think..lol..but they WERE worth the investment. Just wish I could sell them off again).

I paid 10k for my hilt, used it for a week, then upgraded it.

Would gladly do again, the quest chain is awesome.

I'm a casual raider. I bought my hilt for 12k some time back and have been very happy with it. The price was no worse than other crafted or BOE epics I'm currently wearing. It's also no worse than buying the parts for my chopper which I made tonight, or my Traveler's Tundra Mammoth.

If you know how to make money, Blizz will give you plenty of cool things to spend it on. I like that part of the game, both making money and spending it on shineys.

The quest chain was very nice. For Alliance, you get a moment similar to Dartol's Rod of Transformation, where you say to yourself "wait, so if I don't finish the quest I can visit the Horde Inn in Dalaran any time I want?" Hmm, is that worth 12k?....

Usually RP does this for me, but if you're referring to unintentional situations - pretty much all sorts of questing. People tend to hate questing when an expansion comes out as they use it, like you said, as a "means to an end". They need to get to 80 quick and don't care about the quests. Though if you actually stop to think for a second and experience stuff as the early horde Dragonblight quests (Taun'ka refugee camp and Icemist Village), Grizzly Hills, Zul'Drak and the sheer beauty of some parts of the howling fjords, you will be amazed. I actually love doing those quests alone, simply because of the awesome feeling of loneliness and the impact you are making in the zone (which specifically applies to Zul'drak). And that's just Northrend, I guess - I haven't even started about zones like Eversong woods (which incidentally, made for great RP when TBC was first released), Dun Morogh and Durotar (I swear I can feel the heat/cold irl everytime I quest in those zones).

That, and the music, really. Putting on the music tends to instantly get me immersed in the game as it's so absurdly awesome and well-working it isn't even funny.

I've still only ever seen one hilt drop, in the first three days. But couple of weeks ago I looked at the 10-man strict loot list, the prices of BoE gear, and my bank account and decided that I'd pay about 10k for a hilt. So I started bidding, and won the third one. It's a big upgrade for my hunter over the 251 rogue 1h axes and beats the ICC polearm/staff until I can use Reforging to get some of the hit off the rest of my gear.

Haven't regretted it for a minute. The weapon itself is well-modeled and appropriately sized for a dwarf (as opposed to the aforementioned axes, which are as tall as my hunter is despite being one-handers). The quest line was an absolute blast - I enjoyed finally seeing the SPOILER, and the new phase for the zone around it was interesting after spending so much time there when it was so very different. I tried to do the whole thing "solo" - i.e. without involving the groups I was with for the first two dungeon quests. Then I failed on the last one, since only a tank class can truly solo it reliably, so I had to bring a friend.

And it could be worse. Friend of mine won a hilt in a PuG one week after spending all his main's loot priority on a 264 weapon. And his alt is a tankadin, which for obvious reasons doesn't have a well-itemized QD. So he got to choose between selling it for money he doesn't need or building his seldom-used offspec around it.

I have NEVER seen the hilt drop at all in the many times I've run ICC5...

I hate my life....

On another note, it'd be nice to at least experience the chain, even if we don't get the hilt, but I guess that's just the other reward for having one =)

Yes, I didn't even have to think about doing the quest or selling the hilt. I knew this was my last quest line of Wrath and most likely the best weapon I was getting too. (My memories of a 10K gold quest line have to be great, right? Smiley: smile) I would've liked to have seen a sword-looking mace called "Quel'Delar", because Hammer of Purified Flame doesn't have the same ring to it.

(Also, glad to hear that weapon skills will be auto-leveled in Cataclysm. Wish they could do something (more) with hunter pets now.)

Sounds like fun. Can all the quests pertaining to instances be completed on Regular mode or is it on heroic only?

Can be done on either.

FoS you need to complete. PoS you can get by with Garfrost* (which means that a Prot Paladin - and possibly other classes - can solo it!). HoR you don't even need to start the Falric/Marwyn event - the mechanics prevent it being soloed (reliably, if you aren't a tank), but if you do it in a PuG instance group be sure to warn the tank, because it starts automatically...

* Which was fortunate, since my heroic fail-PuG broke up after the second wipe on Ick.
