Has anyone looked at the games above wow on that poll?
Ultima Online. Is it still going, being developed for, practical? This was my first MMO, and I would never think about going back.
World of Kungfu. I have never heard of this. Any idea about it?
Asheron's Call. Just about as old as Ultima Online. Haven't heard much of it in ages.
On lists like these, World of Warcraft has the rules of large numbers working against it. The more people who try and experience your product, the more varied the customer response is going to be. If you had 11 million people try and by your product, there are going to be more then a few who don't like it. I am also a member of a board game group online. The mass sold games have more games played and more people have played them. For these games to get good ratings, the vast majority of gamers have to like the game. It has to be a solid game that everyone can enjoy, because most people have played them. The niche games, though, that are only targeted at a select group of gamers only have to fit the play style of THOSE gamers. And sense those gamers are the only ones playing the game, guess what, they are going to rate it higher. If someone from outside the specialty where to play that game, they would probably mark it a lot lower.
A practical example would be the boardgame Ticket to Ride. From one popular sight, it has been rated 11,715 times with an average score of 7.55 at an over all rank of 50th. That is a large sample size for that sight, meaning probably most people have played the game, and most people tend to like it, but some have had to mark it lower. Now look at the ranking for Command and Colors: Ancients. It has an average score of 8.01. By this example, more people like this game, it is amazing, and it blows Ticket to Ride out of the water at rank 15. But if you look closer, only 2547 people have actually ranked the game. It is more of a niche game with a smaller demographic. It was designed to sell and play really well to a smaller niche market (war gamers). I am betting that if the 11,715 people who ranked ticket to ride also played and ranked Command and Colors, that average ranking would drop like a rock.
A lot of those other games, though are geared and aimed at niche markets and are aimed at only pleasing them. If they only have a small market, and cater to it, then that select market will probably enjoy the game more. If you had the same amount of people who ranked World of Warcraft also rank all these smaller games, I am betting that those scores would drop a lot. These average lists don't mean anything unless they also give you the amount of people who ranked each game.
