That's what bad PR does to a company (or two). They are dealing with a very selfish, fickle user base and they made them mad.
It doesn't matter that WM was costing them money, how dare they inconvenience the all important addon user!.
Bad PR is very easy to generate with the WoW community, they feed on it (which is why I don't go to the oforums often).
I've written addons. I wrote Gatherershare among other things (the reason there is a sharing feature in Gatherer now). But I found out pretty quickly that the WoW users are jerks and I stopped supporting them.
Combine the web sites that want their money, with a self-entitled user community, with an addon developer community that has an abnormally high number of primadonnas, and it I'd say an implosion was overdue.
