From where did you get your name?Follow

Misress D got over a hundred responses to her thread about name pronunciation, I wondered where some of those names originated, what was the source of inspiration.

Zarkando was the name of my fave char in D&D back in the 70's. (Yeah, I'm old) I used it as my first mage in EQ, but my shammy there, Chato, sort of went from alt to main. Over time I finally got fed up by some things in EQ, swore off mmorpgs, played rpgs on my computer, like Morrowind and Oblivion, but Bliz (was familiar with them playing D and then D2), in the best schoolyard drug dealer methodology, gave a free month last Dec. (Come on kid, try it.... the first hit is free.... then you pay.... moohaha). My quibbles with EQ didn't exist in WoW, so yeah, I was hooked.

Anyway, I'd long gotten over trying to come up with fantasy sounding names for my toons, so I have a couple right now that are designed to give a passing player who reads the name a bit of a chuckle....

For instance... Kardoor.... (Pronounced Car Door)

Maybe my next one will be WindShield......

Some dead guy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracelsus
aka Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim

Also used it in EQ and various other games. Though he hasn't been my WoW main for a long time, I still like to use it as a forum handle.

I actually don't remember where I got it from. It just walked into my mind I guess. I give all my characters a name ending with -ndil, as a kind of signature. Thundil, Thalendil, Tushendil are a few of em.

I started playing WoW because of people in the Out of Topic forum here at Allakhazoo. So I used "Seotamot," which is Tomatoes spelled backwards, as my character name so they'd know who I was.

With the exception of my Tauren, MeadowMuffin, all of my character names deal somehow with flatulence. Flatonius, Flatunello, Phlatus, you get the drift. Ahhhhh.

Sielncia, obviously, is because Rogues are stealthy, and silence is paramount. She's also female.

Immjacko
Safejacko
Deathbyjacko

A prefix followed by jacko, my RL-friends-static-party-inside-joke credo.
Imm is mother of, chosen because she's the guild master and static group leader.
Safe is a protection Paladin. Protection implies safety.
Deathby is clear enough. She's also my soon to be created Death Knight, fanatical jacko practitioner undaunted by death.

Kavek is just some name I came up with that sounded vagely gnomish to me. I've seen a couple of other people with it, but I don't think it means anything.

I just made mine up back when I started playing FFXI in 2003. But the more I think about it, the more I believe I was subconsciencely inspired by Izual from Diablo II.

It never really clicked until 4-5 months later when somebody noticed my name and asked me if I had been a big D2 player.

Gobi is my main. The name came from that stoner sketch on Saturday Night Live Jared's Room. Gobi was Jared's sidekick. It thought it was an awesome name.

Well my nickname and name I used in most online games was Mic.

Some friends started playing Matrix online and dragged me in. Mic was already taken, and I wanted to sound all techy and stuff so went Micro, which was taken, then Micros.

Then when I started Wow, I liked the sound of Druids, and had wanted to be a tauren. I liked the idea of being a female one since I saw so few when watching my friends play. Micros seemed a bit strange as a Tauren name, so a slight tweak later, Milkros was born.

Kinariu was an eq random name with an modification. I used it for years, she was retired in EQ2.

Darqflame, originally Darkflame Assassin was my first rogue in EQ that I played anonymously to get away from tell hell and being an officer of my guild. I used that name when I got the job here because most people didn't know it was me. I don't think I told more than a few people for a year or two. I removed the Assassin part and use it all the time. Oh yeah, I changed the K to a Q because 1)everyone and their dog started using it, 2)the dot.com was nearly 100k for it and 3) the Q is quirky!

I have several changes to the flame name: Dorqflame, Deadflame, etc

I have Morbidia for my undead, due to my morbid curiosity.

I also have Beeyawnsay (Beyonce) for one Blood Elf because damnit, she looks just like her!

I have a few others... maybe it's time for a new name!

All my names are taken from the fantasy book series "The Malazan Book of the Fallen" by Steven Erikson.
Besides the "Song of Fire and Ice" by George R. R. Martin and to a lesser degree "The Dark Tower" by Stephen King my favourite books so far.

Main character, Hawkrider: Just a deviation of my real name that my friends have called me all of my life.

Hornblower: Named after the greatest fictional naval adventure character in the world, Horatio Hornblower.

Dreade: Just sounded cool and I may have been drinking too much when I created him.
