Dammit Blizzard, stop lying, just say what is really wrong, this is getting ridiculous, at least if servers won't be up until Thursday, say so in the login screen message, instead of making hourly announcements, making people waste their time. Oh, BTW, now there is no ETA, so expect several hours more of downtime. I expect the usual normal people to comment and trolls to start bashing and insulting everyone.

They are finding new things wrong as time goes on. When a surgeon does a routine emergency surgery to remove an appendix sometimes they find cancer too.

Yup Blizzard is lying. They want to give their fanatical 11,000,000+ player base a chance to rest right before an expansion.

I just have one question for you! Are you really a ****** or do you just play one on the forums??

If they didn't give a time, people would complain, if it was a longer time than they were actually down for.. people would complain for "wasting time doing RL things and missing game time." People are going to complain. If it was a fire department being disabled for an amount of time.. sure.. But it is a game, a game we all love to play, but we should be able to get away without it, unlike water and food and air.

My thoughts are going towards internal sabotage from one or more disgruntled employees ... or even to some "corporate-competitor" shenanigans. I tend not to be a conspiracy freak, but this is really really worse than ever and quite unusual, at least looking in from the outside. Combined with the fact that they are expecting some heavy media events tonight in connection with the release of Lich King...I just started wondering.

On the other hand...it could just be coincidence...

Cheers,

The only trolls here are the ones who made new accounts here yesterday to join the snivel fit.

... like the mail issue, free PvP issue, and now database problems? They are saying what's wrong, dingus. I think the answer you want is "Blizzard doesn't want me to play. /emo!"

This is undoubtedly the poorest work I've ever seen in any game, and I've not only played a lot, but I've worked with people who worked on them(Xerox employees who bailed on gaming). To have downtime is one thing, to make up bullsh*t excuses to pull the game down is another, but to give completely WORTHLESS estimations is NOT acceptable.

Blizz can take the game down all they want, but their inability to give a reasonable answer as to WHEN it will be up is completely shameful. If I worked for Blizz, I'd hide any evidence because I'd be embarrassed.

First, you obviously never played FFXI near the start of the American release. It was much worse, and they NEVER spoke to their playerbase.
Second, this has been anticipated by most of us here on the forums. If you're far from a troll, then you should know this. The fact that you chose to ignore it, and then complain on the boards that warned you to be prepared in the first place, makes you worse than a troll. It makes you an moran.
Third, if you worked for Blizzard you wouldn't be here ******** because you'd be working your *** off to fix the problem. Guess you didn't think of that, huh?
Fourth, If you worked for Blizzard, I guarantee you'd NOT hide the fact of your employment when it comes to stock options. Because come tomorrow, Blizzard's (well, Viviendi's) stocks are going to soar due to the expansion. You're obviously just sour grapes right now because you're an addict and can't get your fix. The rest of us are too; we just hide it better.

Editted to put in bold tags. For viewing pleasure.

Yeah, you're right, everyone at Blizz will probably be sitting in their office playing WotLK, thinking 'ah well, ***** that 11 million playerbase we've build up with this great game with more uptime than most other MMO's' instead of working their asses off to get the game ready for a huge xpac.

I didn't check when I left for work this morning as in the back of my mind I knew it would be down.

Whether because of the mail, the gear, the expansion, or some serious equipment or software problems unrelated to mail/gear/expansion I haven't a clue.

Do know that I agree with others. If you are going to be down for a long period of time then say so as the damage is done and to dangle a carrot by saying 'will be up in an hour' or whatever just makes the majority of players more upset when it does not happen.

They said they have no idea how long it will take. That means they are very early in the debugging process where they know there's a problem, but don't even know yet what is causing it. After they find the cause it will be significantly easier to estimate how long it will take to fix.

In the meantime, though, "No ETA on uptime" can pretty much be synonymous with "It's going to be down for a long time". They'll have an ETA long before the servers come up, so expect the downtime to continue for hours or more.

(I have a feeling the DB guys won't be showing up at the midnight releases, and that several of the Blizzard guys will look rather ragged, after all the events of the past week)

Think about the impossibility of effectively staffing for this. It's not likely that Blizzard has a building full of employees that are sitting around with nothing to do, waiting for massive issues to come up. Every employee they have probably already has a daily workload. On top of that, you add the logistics of implementing an expansion with nearly enough content to be a stand-alone game. I imagine they've probably already grabbed onto every qualified contractor (along with some unqualified ones) they can, and are over-working their employees to get this release to go as smoothly as possible.

I don't envy being in charge of a massive game release that's complicated by the need to support millions of players before the game even drops.

Usually they close you up and do chemo before the cancer is removed. They also usually get consent to operate on that new issue as it isn't the issue they went in for. They don't rush to fix the new problem.

That's because you own your body, not the hospital. Blizzard owns the servers they are working on and therefore need nobodies permission. It's a bad analogy all together, much like apples and oranges.

That operates on the assumption when the started the "3 hour" maintenance this morning that they knew it would take longer than three hours. Chances are, they didn't. Chances are, they implemented the free PvP gear fix and just as they were getting ready to bring everything back up, something else went wrong.

It happens.

I have been playing wow for about 2 years now, and yesterday was the ONLY time that I had time to play that I actually couldn't because of the game. Whine all you want, but I am quite satisfied with my experience and pretty glad that Blizzard is working so hard to keep the game up and running.

They are probably beating their heads off the desks trying to figure this out, and no doubt many of the programmers have had little or no sleep since starting server maint. yesterday. Cut them some slack.

For as many people that play this game, especially during peak hours, and for everything that is going on all at once and all the load being place on the servers, trust me, they are damn good for being able to keep this game running smoothly 99% or the time.

I don't care if they keep it down all night if it makse the Wrath release smooth. This is untimely as it is so close to launch, but noone at Blizzars said "Hey, lets break some stuff to **** people off." They have it a LOT worse than us. If they don't fix it before release they will have a lot more than some whiney kids yelling at them.

Here's what's really going on.

A WotLK torrent consisting of game content was leaked and was available for download. There are some people who have their game now, illegally, but Blizz doesn't want anyone playing it til the official release date. So they've come up with excuses as to why they're keeping the servers offline. They brought the servers up last night for a few hours so people wouldn't get too suspicious.

You can thank all the pirates out there for ruining our week.

Things get leaked on bt all the time, all they would need to do is block that particular client. No, they're not coming up with excuses to keep the servers offline.

You're right on the money.

I started playing FFXI when it was beta, July 2003.
The NA release of FFXI was a nightmare to say the least. SE was tantamount to a mute in comparison to the Support at Blizzard. The second wave of atrocities at SE was the PS2 release.

At any rate, I see a vast majority of the people who are so indelibly addicted to WoW as acting like this:

"Hey! Give me more content, give me more content, so i can RUSH through it to have better gear and leet stuff way sooner than everyone else, completely miss the point of the experience and get bored right away with the newly created content that has just been introduced. YES I will accept that the server maintenance needs to happen for that, but give it to me!"

Fast forward to a time before release...

"Wait a second! I was only kidding, I will absolutely NOT understand or accept a couple days of preparing a system to handle what it was I was screaming for a few months ago... I was j/k"

I don't know, I simply love this game, but a modicum of understanding would not be out of line here.
