Yes,why wouldn't the naming policy apply to guilds. I would have thought it would more apply to guilds. A guild could potentially be seen in a lot more places than a single character' name.

What was the name?

You're lucky. Our guild name was deemed inappropriate and we were given no notice, no chance to change the name, it was done for us by a not-so-friendly GM. We just logged in one morning and saw that we were members of "darasguild" or something close to it.

For the record, what was the old guild name?

Did it come from a Blizzard email address?

If so, can I be the first to scream, ************* DUH!" at the top of my lungs?

It links to Blizzard websites.

It has the proper feel of the GM department.

It went to your GM, and doesn't require any account info to be sent back.

Can we please use an ounce of logic concerning this stuff?

I've seen that before. Having the guild name changed to "GM's Guild." Automatically.

That guild's name was <JFK was flagged for PvP> so it's kind of understandable why someone would find that offensive.

Two Questions: were you on an RP server, and what was the original guild name, the one you were told to change. If you were on an RP server, then unusual characters would probably qualify as inappropriate, as would many guild names that would be appropriate on Normal Servers.

and in answer to your query: no, i have never recieved that letter. Then again, i have only started 1 guild, and that was recently.

I've seen loads of "swearing" type names around recently. The server I'm on now seemed to be inundated with names involving words like "***" "nipple" and even "************ and "****"

A member of my guild got done for his character name "FOCK" but yet we have a "SHOT" "FOOKA" and "FACA" all of these are 70's as well. Fock had been level 70 for months but he was allowed to pick a new name though, he got petitioned in game and the GM was very polite just told him to please change it.

To be honest it doesn't bother me too much but I just assume they are all 12-17 year old lads... mostly this is correct. The email itself sounds genuine enough especially if it's only gone to the GM and doesnt ask for any log in details just asks you to contact them in game.

Without knowing the guild name it's hard to be sure but I'm sure you can tell yourself if it's inappropriate, I'm wondering if the hesitation to give the information means some embarrassment about it?

Tbh even I would have reported that one and I'm pretty liberal...

I can understand what they would just change it asap, maybe the email is a polite way of letting you change things yourself. I wonder if the email came after the auto change for the above one?

I remember reporting a guild once- it was called <Donkey Punchers>. Usually I have a 'just ignore it' policy regarding names, but I could see lots of kids trying to find out what donkey punching was all about. Not cool. Smiley: oyvey

Yeah, I agree. I guess we should be glad that kids don't run passed a guild called <Two Girls One Cup> and try to find out more about what that means Smiley: yikes

The news of Canada being a "sh*tty" place to live is over 40 years old but I'm sure Canadians would still be offended if I made a guild called <Canada sucks>

(note: I'm not American and I don't live anywhere near it, so I have no bias in its favour)

I think it's just one of those things that you don't do imo, no racial, class, sexuality or country slurs and no slurs on major tragic news events. We all see the jokes but it doesn't mean it's appropriate for WoW environment regardless of your feelings.

I can't remember but i think it was a vague reference to testes. It's strange because my rogue's name has been confirmed by a GM as "not inappropriate". In fact, there's so many Firecrotch's around, I had to change my name on the PTR because someone else already had used it.

I reported a guild called <Puppy Kickers>.
I probable would have let it go, but the guy was an obnoxious A-hole. I remember shortly after wards, a level 1 spamming in trade non stop asking who reported the guild name. I had to laugh.

Just means no one's noticed yet. And you do know "Shot" is a real word? Be really surprised if they made him change that for sounding like **** and they don't change "Multi-shot"

I believe that the guild <JFK was Flagged for PvP> was an Uldaman guild. Seems about right. I remember it being there one day and gone the next.

I've also seen guilds with the name <Naga Please>, <Naga Stole My Bike>, and my personal favorite...<Come Honor Face>.

The reason <JFK was flagged for PvP> was changed probably had to do with the naming policy clearly stating that you aren't allowed to name characters after celebrities. I'm guessing the same policy extends to guild names. A less offensive guild name, like, <Mickey Mouse's Fan Club> or <John McCain's Fan Club> would probably get treated the same way. Doesn't mean someone reported it, though. Perhaps a Game Master stumbled across it and decided that it was just a wee bit over the line with both a celebrity reference and a pretty cruel joke on his death as well.

Theo, just because the e-mail address looks like a Blizzard address and the links lead to Blizzard sites, doesn't mean it can't be a phishing attempt. I'm fairly sure it's not, but please don't treat everyone like they're supposed to know everything. You send out negative vibes, man. People come here for help, whether it's in-game or technical. If you don't want to help, fine, but don't get all hostile.
