Way back when the game was new, my Shammy was level 22 before I realized I could drop more than one totem at a time.
I did something similar - I rolled a Draenei Shaman (alliance) when BC came out, leveled him to around 18, then went back to focusing on my main. I just picked him back up again a couple months ago, and couldn't figure out why I was having such a hard time with him... constantly going through nearly all my mana and health every single fight and just barely pulling it off... until I remembered I could drop more than one totem. Ahhhh.... much better.
The biggest gaffe for me, however, was on my main - a BM hunter. After turning 70, I spent a lot of time in battlegrounds earning marks and honor for the "welfare" epics. Eventually I joined a 2v2 team with some guildmates, and after our first couple fights one of the guys asked if I was BM, and I said yes. "Why did you get feared then?" he asked. Until that very moment (and the ensuing discussion), I didn't realize that Beastial Wrath and The Beast Within made me (and my pet) immune to fear, stun, etc. The description says, "While enraged, you do not feel pity or remorse or fear, and you cannot be stopped unless killed." I always thought it was a strange description and thought they put all that in there for lore or "flavor" and it never occurred to me to read it in terms of gameplay.
I have never felt more like a huntard than that particular moment.
