Hello fellow Allakhazam peoples!

I've recently stopped my FFXI habit and moved over to WoW with a friend. Let me tell you, as many of you already know, this is a gigantic change to what I am used to. I have gone through the stickies and guides (holy sh*t that's alot of information) and I have a pretty basic concept of what I should and should not be doing.

I think it is extremely cool that Blizzard allows and even encourages the use of third party add-ons for WoW. I've installed Curse client and there is way too many add-ons for the site that I am overwhelmed by which I should and shouldn't be using.

Could anyone recommend any add-ons that would help me? I've installed questhelper and metamap. I haven't really done any reading on instances/raids since I am just starting out and won't have to worry about that for awhile. This means that I don't really need any add-ons that have to do with raiding, unless you can tell me different.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I am using a hunter (omg I hope to aspire to something more than a huntard) and I play a Tauren.

Omen threat meter (No one really has it till Outlands it seems)
Tomtom/Lightheaded is your leveling duo there.
Auctioneer (handy for finding vendor prices on the fly, disenchant info and to make money)

There's a starter list.

There are tons and tons of addons to change your UI, those can be helpful and fun if you want to dedicate some time to it.
(getting used to a new layout and the creating of your own personal UI)

Besides that, Omen is a fantastic addon for anyone who does pretty much anything grouped.
(assuming the other people in your group also use a threatmeter, wich is fairly common)

And there are loads of class specific addons wich are very helpful.
Such as Zhuntermod for hunters and Totemtimers for Shamans.

The only Addon I would suggest anyone to download except for Omen is Quartz because it shows all spellcasting for you, your target and even your focus target if you want.
It also shows the amount of latency you have so you can react to that.

AutoProfitX - lets you click one button at a vendor to automatically sell all your greys.
RatingBuster - lets you easily compare gear and see which piece is better.
If you're a rogue, Hemlock makes poison buying and making 10x easier.

There's a lot of other stuff I use, including FuBar (puts a bar on top of your screen that you can get all sorts of nifty plugins for) and XPerl Unit Frames (replaces your unit frames with cool looking ones and 3d portraits).

All are available on http://files.wowace.com and you can download a program called WowAceUpdater that automatically updates all Wowace addons (just google it).

Auctioneer is first and foremost the best addon a new person to WoW can install. Once it "learns" the prices on your selected server, you will have little issue with cash.
I don't like Questhelper personally, but two addons that are equally useful are Cartographer (and all it's sub-addons) and MobMap (www.mobmap.de). Mobmap uses an offline (locally stored) database that allows you to search for mob/NPC locations as well as drop locations. I do know of other addons that use Thottbot and/or Wowhead's database instead of an offline one, but do not any names.

Also if you use WoW Ace Updater (www.wowace.com) you will be able to download, install and manage all sorts of useful, fun and interesting addons without the hassle of installing them manually. It can also update any Ace-based (an addon programming toolbox is what it amounts to) addon in just a few seconds, very useful on patch days when addons are typically "broken" by Blizzard.

Almost forgot: I use a small addon called Sell-O-Matic that with one click you can dispose of your grey-quality items to a vendor, as well as any other specified items (be VERY careful about this!). It will save you LOADS of time, especially when first starting out.

Thanks for the fast responses. I checked out the aforementioned add-ons and they definitely will be downloaded and installed once I get home from work.

Would you say this is better than the curse client I installed?

Again, thanks for the replies!

Mobinfo - Shows the health (in numbers) of mobs.

SpamSentry - Cuts out all the annoying gold selling spam in the general chat channels and blocks incoming whispers from gold sellers aswell.

CT_Mailmod - Gives you an extra button to be able to auto open all your mail, great for collecting multiple items withough clicking everything.

Don't forget Atlasloot and Atlas. Both are great for dungeon loot and locations along with bosses in dungeons and their locations.

I'm going to mention this, because once I found out about it, it has helped a great deal with keeping my addons up to date.

You may want to download WoWmatrix as well. It allows you to update all your addons at once instead of having to go to the site everytime and redownloading the updated version for each one. Plus, you're able to add addons quickly without having to find you folder to put it in, take the time to search through them all, etc.

It's all easy in one program.

Well, yes. For one thing, Curse addons update once every few weeks or months at most. Ace addons can update multiple times per day because they're community/open-sourced CVS addons.

I'd heartily reinforce the recommendation for Lightheaded, it's an absolute lifesaver for questing. Other than that it's been covered.

So it would be normal to have Curse, WowAce, and WowMatrix all to manage plugins? What's the simplest and most efficient way of doing this?

edit: I'm going to uninstall Curse when I get home and install WoWAce and WoWMatrix. I'm going to remove the plugins I already have and install a fresh new set of plugins:

Omen threat meter
Lightheaded
Auctioneer
Zhuntermod
AutoProfitX
CT_Mailmod
Atlasloot
Atlas
Questhelper

These should be sufficient enough for me to get started. Thanks for all of the replies and I wish you all the best!

Welcome to WoW fellow former FFXI player and current hunter.
Recently, I too just started using AddOns.
I recommend Cartographer and DamageMeters, both available from curse.com

Cartographer
- see full area maps including areas you have not discovered
- resize and adjust the transparency of the big map
- make map markers and notes which will also show up on the compass minimap in the top right
- dungeon and instance maps with boss locations and info already on them
- shows areas level ranges and color codes them by difficulty in relation to your current characters level
- color codes and numbers raid group markers on maps

DamageMeters
- be able to compare your dps, hots, and other numbers you might want to know with up to an entire raid group
- I find it is a good way to judge how my character is doing and see if I truly need improvements
- tracks overhealing, handy for learning to maximize mana efficiency as a healer
- it's also handy because you can post the data in guild, whisper, party, and raid chat
- allows you to parse pet damage info seperately or as your own

I can't stress enough the importance of Omen threat meter for a hunter. With the changes to boars it's become too easy to pull aggro/hate from your pet. This one addon will save you from quite a few corpse runs.

You don't *need* any, especially as a new player. If I were you, and if I could do it all over again, I would start off with nothing but the default UI. Get used to the game, get used to how everything looks and what everything does.

When you understand the game and the interface, then look to start changing things. Ask yourself, what would I improve? Look in your class' forums and see what's handy for other players and ask yourself if that would also be handy for you. Go to the UI and addons forums and see pictures of interfaces that others have set up, ask questions and start playing around.

We can tell you what we use, but it won't do much good if you don't understand how or why.

I agree that you don't really need that many mods, especially at the beginning of the game. Of course you're free to try out as many as you like.

My personal favourite convenience mod is trinket menu. You probably won't get many, if any, trinkets for some time, but it makes thing much easier when you do with regards to swapping and activating trinkets.

Awesome, except I extrememly reccomend TomTom with Lightheaded, because Lightheaded opens up another window with your Quest Log that links Directly to WoWhead. It displays comments people have made, and sometimes people will tell you coordinates, with TomTom you click on the Coordinates and it shows up on your map, and even has an arrow pointing to it that you can move wherever on your screen you want it to be!

Also:

Is also EXTREMELY good advice, I didn't use ANY addons until my main was 65+.

im a big fan of scrolling combat text and its companion addon SCTDamage. WoW has its own built-in SCT system but i find it lacking in a number of situations, especially in pvp where it provides lots of buff/debuff information as well as procced events (such as when an opponent dodges it gives a nice bold "OVERPOWER!" sign right in front of my face).

its also nice and customizeable, including a font that hearkens back to comic book stylings. its not a necessary addon by any means, but its one i find enhances my enjoyment of the game, as well as its playability.

Whatever you do, don't fall for the douchebag that just spammed 3 posts in a row about a goldbuying site. I wish goldselling (and buying) was a federal offense punishable by death.

Oh, and in my personal opinion, Recount is a far better damage meter than the one simply called DamageMeter. Seems to be more accurate and keeps track of a TON of various things, not just damage done and dps. It also has neat graphs and keeps track of all the abilities that register on Recount and such.

I would like though to reinforce what was said already, as a new player, you don't "need" addons really. What's more important is familiarizing yourself with the game, how the classes play and how solo and group play flows. Addons just might hinder that learning process. I didn't even start using any addons until I was already playing for six months, mainly because I really didn't know the full scope of what they were. When I found out though, I was amazed. And I haven't looked back since.

Oh, and whoever reads this, rate the goldspammer down to sub-default with me, please. Let's all do our part in trying to rid the world of these scum, one ratedown at a time.

Welcome to WoW.

All of the addons listed above are great, they are applicable for any class.

For your Hunter specifically though, I would recommend getting ZhunterMod.

As your Hunter gains levels and abilities, this mod will become more and more useful to you.

I wouldn't mess around with any addons at all to start out.

Learn to play with Vanilla WoW. Once you have a decent grasp of the game, then worry about changing/adding on to it.

Just a thought.

Welcome to the show!

I too came from FFXI a year ago, and I'm very happy I made the leap to a greener pasture ;)

When I first started out, I didn't know jack about what to do or even that add-ons existed. I did my homework after hearing about them and generally try anything new if it can benefit me.

The game revolves around doing quests, and the best quest add-on I've tried has to be Carbonite. In my opinion, it's the Cadillac of quest helpers.

Basically, you accept a quest, click a little bubble on the quest watch window of the quest you'd like to do, then Carbonite will place an arrow on the screen directing you where to go and how long it will take to get there. And when you're done with the quest, the arrow will direct you back to the quest giver to turn it in.

It also highlights areas on your main map that pertain to certain quests, so you can line out what order would be most efficient to tackle a group of quests.

Also if you get into pvp any, Carbonite will place a second minimap on screen of the whole battlefield so you can see where all your teammates are.

Here's a link if anyone is interested:

Have fun and welcome to WoW!
