The etiquette of vanish...Follow

Hi all,

I thought about posting this in the rogue forums, but I really wanted to get a broader view as this isn't a mechanics question. My question is how do you feel when an instance group wipes but the rogue saves himself with the vanish ability? Obviously if he (or she) is the last one standing, there's no issue and it's a smart move. But I've been in a number of situations where the healer and a dps dies, the tank's portrait is turning red, there are still 2 or 3 mobs at full health, and one of them turns towards me...in other words, a wipe is imminent (I'm assuming for sake of argument that everyone is in the same gear/level range). What would you consider to be good group behavior in that circumstance?

Personally, unless it's an absolutely awful pug or a group of good friends, I try to go down swinging as I think it's better for group morale. For the few gold in repairs it saves me, I'd rather not have other group members feel like I'm bailing on them...but I was wondered how the rest of you felt when you've encountered a similar situation? Thanks in advance for the input :-)

Rogues are pussies anyway so your behavior is right on target (the vanishing part that is).

Our rogues are up there in terms of pure aggro, so if they vanish, that means the fight isn't over by a long shot.

If the Group is wiping, then it is acceptable to use aggro dropping abilities like feign death, fade, Invis, or Vanish. Saves ya money from not having to pay a repair bill.

(Is invisibility considered an aggro reducing ability? It bugs every time.)

As a rogue, I follow the motto "My own *** first!" (Unless of course it was me that caused the wipe!) So, yep, I always vanish off if the group is in the process of wiping.

Not only will I vanish, my mage is an absolute pro at going invisible to avoid wipe related deaths as well. Hunters also feign death to avoid death. Mages definately have it hardest, because we have to not get touched for a full 5 seconds...which sometimes feels pretty long. Any AOE splash damage ruins invis, and I'm also high on the threat list so if a tank drops odds are the mobs coming to me next.

If I can help salvage the wipe, I try, I really will. I wait to vanish for the last second possible, hopefully bringing 1-2 mobs down with me. But if a tank or healer dies, the group is generally in trouble...

My rogue is an engineer, one of these days I'll get around to making Goblin Jumper Cables XL for that shot at wipe recovery. I hear the XL cables have a ~50% success rate. The schematic drops off Plugger Spazzring in BRD, he's that warlock looking bartender in the bar room. Took me 2 tries to get it, I also came out with the schematic for the old school repair bot, and the fiery weapon enchant formula. Very easy to farm for a stealth class.

My guildies laugh because I'm the only mage who routinely gets away from a wipe clean on my mage. All the other mages fail at invis =D

It's funny in a raid wipe, theres usually 5 of us that never die, 2 hunters, myself and 2 rogues. I've been using the mod recount lately and looking at all the random stats you can find in there. I usually never die in a raid, other people will die up to 8-9 times.

I'm not a tank. If the MT dies and there is a significant amount of mobs left up with no sign of living I will save my butt.

Feign Death was made to be used.

You can usually tell if it's salvageable. If it's not I FD.

Ya great next time I am tanking when the pull foes sour I will run for the exit. No chance to try and salvage the pull. Just run as I have repair bills. Go cat, cower and run till at exit. Ya, thats it.

What happened to having a pair?

Grow up. Blizzard gave 3 DPS classes an escape from wiping for a reason. Don't like it, take it up with them.

Four, technically. My friends joke that I go through more reagents for Divine Intervention than I do for Greater Blessings.

I'm a tank, so repair bills are something I've gotten used to. If something goes completely wrong, and a wipe is happening, I don't mind people using their lifesaving abilities (unless they are Bubble + Heartstone and then crying for a summon because they're on the other end of the world). I'd rather have a rogue/mage/hunter avoiding repair bills then having them die with me and then whine about how their gear is red. People causing a wipe in the first place, and then saving their own *** do annoy me, though.

I have no problem with that I do have problems with DPS quiting on a pull while both I am still alive or the healer is alive. Use them as a last resort fine. Use them when you could be trying to help, shame on you.

considering nobody in this thread has advocated that, i dont know where you are coming from.

Level engineering. Then not only is Vanishing a smart thing to do, your group will thank you when you use your Goblin Jumper Cables to get the party pack up.

well... 50% of the time that works anyway.

I've had several rogues/hunters feign death/vanish and yet we still didn't wipe. Its really annoying when they vanish and the situation is salvageable.

If its salvageable don't use it.

If its not salvageable feel free.

Or the correct answer: Don't PuG so you don't have to worry about it.
