A ret pally can do great damage, but the reason you'd have to cut back on it is because of threat issues. A lot of high-end ret pallies complain about not having a good threat reduction and having to use blessing of salvation, along with sometimes just not attacking so the tank can gain aggro.
I've seen damage meters and damage charts, and I've seen ret pallies come out at top. The reason you don't see this som much is because less than 10% of the raiding pally population is ret, and a little more than 80% is holy. Also, many people think ret is focused around spelldamage and intellect, which is mislead. Seal of Command goes off of melee crit and melee damage, and has a very tiny crappy spell damage coefficient. It's made for arms warrior gear. You need to get AP first, then Crit, then Stamina, then resillience (but only for PvP) then intellect. Spelldamage and spellcrit are unnecessary.
A prot pally is really good at outlasting people, especially if it's a prot/holy hybrid. A holy pally is also really good at outlasting people, but not for raw damage mitigation. Instead it's because of their high-quality mana-efficient heals.

Nothing makes you hate yourself more than when I Pally bubbles in the middle of a fight, then heals to full, while you frustratingly await him to go back to full.
Now, as a warrior, it's best to start bandaging now, cause you'll need some extra health. No. You won't get the full benefit from the bandage since his Holy Light is faster than your bandage, but every little bit helps.
Pallies can still attack with their bubble up, it's just that their attack speed is reduced to 50% of what it normally is. Unless you spec prot that is.
