Thanks

Herbing and Skinning/Mining. All three can be done while questing. You're currently leaving money scattered on the ground.

Check your AH and see what prices ore and skins are going for to make the call between those two profs. Herbs sell no matter what. You'll have your mount money and more in a few days.

I made a Rogue recently and started experimenting with both Herbalism AND mining on one toon. Sure, i will forget to do one or the other sometimes but i usually leave it on mining near rocky areas and hrebalism in valleys and stuff. Once you start mining/herbing, if you flip the tracked to the other one 3/5 times theres another herb/mining nearby!

Being the curious person I am, I looked your toon up in the armory.

This toon shows up as level 70 in the armory.

If they are on same server, go grind in outlands for a few hours and you will have 90 gold in no time...but you should know this already...

Why the difficulty on this new toon?

I think it would be cool to see a thread like this where the OP starts off something like this:

Hi! I just hit 40 and have 3g to my name. I really want my mount but I can't figure out how on earth anyone can get their hands on 90g. I mean, I know how to make gold. I pride myself on having a cool new glow on every weapon I buy from auction. It's kind of frustrating when I sell the weapon back to a vendor 3 levels later and don't even get back a fraction of what I paid for it + the enchant. When I was level 27, I even had an epic sword that I paid 50g for. Sucked that I only got 4g from the vendor when I sold it 7 levels later. I've known since I was level 7 that I wanted a mount but I always just figured the gold would mysteriously appear in my bag once I hit 40. What should I do?

-------------------

Seriously, stop spending everything you make on crap. I'm a 340 enchanter and 90% of the enchants I have are just that...crap. +2 damage here, +3 to a stat there...pointless. Paying for enchants in one of the first ways to bankrupt yourself. Paying for rare/epic items is another good way to do it. Buying new gear in general too often is a fantastic way to be and remain broke.

If I there was a way to go back and view a history of gold coming in/going out on your toon since you first rolled it, you might be astounded to see how much came in before you wasted it.

Level 40 with no gold? Stop spending. That's the first thing you could do before you try to start earning.

There are four main expenditures for any player, regardless of class/spec/profession.

Class Training
Flight Fees
Gear Repairs
Riding Training

I hear an inordinate number of people saying they don't want a mount. Fair enough. You'll have a hard time running a lot of quests/instances in Outland without a flying mount, and you can't get one unless you have the first two tiers of riding training under your belt before you show up to the riding trainer in Shadowmoon Valley with 800g (+100g for the mount itself). Either that, or make friends with an exceptionally patient Warlock and someone else so they can do the flying for you and then summon you to Elemental Plateau/Netherwing Ledge/Mechanar/Botanica/Arcataraz/Skettis/Ogri'La encampment etc. when you decide you want to go there.

Plan ahead, and stop wasting gold.

Actually, one of the most important reasons to get your flying mount at 70 is the fact that you cannot be summoned to these instances. In fact, summons do not work at all in Netherstorm for this very reason. :)

I agree, stop spending gold if you are. Start making money if you arent.

The other day i was in ZF and there was this warrior in the group, level 54, who rolled on a cloth boots (ZOMG!) because he said he needed money after buying his axe. He got the boot (no pun intended) soon after.

Funny thing is, hes 14 and he doesnt know whats AOE, whats taunt, sunder, that thunderstorm is an AOE, he wears a cloak with +11 to int. His warrior is level 54 btw. o.O

§1.
Get gathering professions (at least for a start). Skinning is great, there are a lot of quests out there where you have to kill 3.86+e8 beasts. That means almost as many leather pieces, for free. The other, herb/mining are equal.

$2.
Get big bags as soon as you can. I managed to buy 4 x 12-slot bags at level 5.
Collect EVERYTHING! Everythng has a price at at vendors shop or even better, the AH. Stuff you sell to a vendor for 30c is still 30c in your pocket.

$3.
Be careful and don't buy crap. At the AH, if a piece of gear gives you just a minor upgrade, skip it, don't buy. Wait a couple of levels till you find even better gear.

By doing those 3 things, you should have the mount gold in 2 days at level 40.
My BE rogue had 100g at level 21 this way. Now I'm 26 and have about 140g but I just bought myself a nice blue dagger (improvement +10dps).

Good luck

Do you have fishing?

If not, get it. This is a good way to make some cash. Money makers for your level would be Oily Blackmouths, Firefin Snappers, and the always popular Deviate fish. With the deviates, you're gonna want to take up cooking as well. Invest a little gold to get the recipe for Savory Deviate Delights. I bought the recipe for 6g and would sell stacks of Savorys for 6-9g all day long. Also with fishing, you can fish up Floating Debris. Sell everything you catch.

Also try soloing some of the lower level instances such as SFK, WC, BFD, and VC. Again, sell everything you get.

I was in a similar situation around your level and this was some of the things I did to make money. I have skinning and LW, so I put off leveling LW for a few levels and sold stacks of leather.

There are three types of money-makers (players) in WoW:

1. Those that know how to make gold and get rich enough that they don't have to worry about saving.

2. Those that can save their gold for necessary things (training, mounts, etc.)

3. Those that have no clue whatsoever, and are lured into thinking that crafting skills can make them money.

What everyone else has said is entirely true. Gold comes from gathering professions. Fishing is a gathering profession. Enchanting can (and should) be treated as a gathering profession. Even going out and killing mobs for drops can be treated as a gathering profession.

The main thing is to sell everything you don't need and skill-up the professions you need to make gold. That includes cooking - if a raw item sells for an amount, the amount you get doubles when it's cooked.

An alternative to gathering is playing the AH. Buy low, sell reasonable. There are always people who low-ball items for a quick sale. Playing the AH takes a bit of skill - you need to study the market and get the tools necessary to do it (Auctioneer) before you put a single copper into it. BUt once you do, money comes easily.

Reroll a hunter, level him to 20, during the levelling process pick up mining and skinning and mine and skin everything you see and sell everything you get.

Voila. It might take you to level 25 or so depending on how many nodes you find. I just dinged level 13 and I'm at nearly 20 gold, but I have about 6 gold worth of stuff to sell.

Interesting suggestion. I wouldn't follow it. Combine Herbalism / Mining with Skinning. You can only have one resource type showing up on the minimap at a time, so you will either pick herbs or minerals to show up and have to spot the rest. Not that effective. Also, herbs and leather don't really sell that well until higher levels. Low level herbs sell for a few silver, low level ore sells for a few gold. High level herbs sell for much more gold than high level ore though.

Edit: the reason why low level herbs don't sell that much while high level does for lots of gold and ore sells for quite a bit in lower levels is because herbalism is only for alchemy, mining is for blacksmithing, engineering, and jewelcrafting.

If you have been pushing hard to reach 70, you may need to take a moment to gather your resources for the next push. As others have said, there are a handful of fairly basic and successful ways to make gold; however, they require you to be willing to spend time that isn't always directly rewarded with experience points.

Set some objectives that are lower than your level, that you can do with minimal time and repair bills. Gathering skills are great, but nodes tend to be bait to haul you through a stack of mobs. Pick something you can get to easily, you might want to look at the AH and see what looks like a steady resource first. Note, a steady resource, not a blue that would sell for a boatload but takes days of grinding to get. Don't misunderstand, sure, it is nice to have something go for a huge chunk of your goal, but make those things targets of opportunity rather than the focus of your money making.

As others have said before, don't look down on money from selling things to vendors either. One of my personal favorites is the clam. A low level character of mine was on a run through BFD and it was one of those days where nothing was dropping and I wasn't getting any of the drops we did see. No one wanted clams or shiny fish scales, they were considered vendor trash. I kept opening clams, walked out with stacks of clam meat, cooked them, and got a decent stack of silver along with the points I got in cooking. I also got something like seven pearls and a couple of stacks of fish scales to put on the auction house, and got a few more gold that way. A handful of common weapons and armor that no one else wanted went for a few silver each, not earth shattering but it added to my take on the run. No, I didn't get rich, but that would have been empty bag space if I didn't put it to use. Instead, I made a few gold for my time. Silly me, I could have kept that space empty and hoped for greens like the other guy did.

Auction house. Be a high roller there and you can make a pretty decent profit. I'm a 36 pally and I have around 90g (after spending 20 to get something for a friend). Plus, my mount is free, which is good cause I'll need the cashola.

But invest in some bags and run some serious instances.
