Why bother doing all that work, why not just let people upload their own banner design? Set a size limit, make it one of their 10 files.
I love it though. Only took like a year to be able to differentiate, good for Alla. Hell, it took them 3 just to get an kind of image there.

There are a few levels of caching to overcome. For the sake of speed, when the image is served, your browser is told that it's good for 24 hours without re-checking. To overcome this and force an update on your cache, view the image and then hold down the shift key while reloading. that will force the caches to be ignored.
Oh, I forgot to mention..
It's internationalized too. (missing a couple stat translations though)
