I just bought and installed a BC xpansion pack but later got the collector's edition as a gift, can I give my normal xpansion pack to a friend but using the collector's edition CD Key with no problems? And will that affect the retreival of the exclusive in-game pets? And will all my characters under that account get pets or will it be only to one char? Thanks.

I'm not sure what is happening in the US with regards to CE pets, but in Europe there has been a major mistake by Blizzard in the way the CE boxes were coded. Essentially ALL burning crusade keys are the same (None collectors edition) and as a purchaser of a CE edition box you have to post a piece of the box to Blizzard to claim an in game code to retrieve your pet. Afaik the pet is available to all characters registered on that account. I'm guessing that you could give the key listed in your CE box to your friend along with the disks and send in your proof to Blizzard to retrieve your pet on your already upgraded account. You cannot however upgrade the same account twice with two different keys.

If you already installed the xpac (not the CE), then you're out of luck in getting the pets. You can only use one key to upgrade an account, and you already used the one from the standard box. If you swap accounts with your friend, then you will be inviolation of ToU and both accounts can get banned for sharing accounts. It looks like a lose-lose situation.

I held out for the CE (even though it cost me over $110.00 to buy in Canada) because of the pet. My Fiance installed it for me on my pc and upgraded my account. I wondered about the pet thing because I was expecting to get a card with a code or something - like the murlock pets, but was pleasantly surprised to find that as soon as I created my Draenei I had mail. I ran to the nearest town with a box and claimed my pet. I decided to see if all of my toons got it, and yup all my existing toons had mail waiting for them as well. Now all new toons created on my account have a neatherwhelp. I am so thrilled.
Just keep in mind that these are BoP so you cannot trade, mail, sell or otherwise make profit from them. I was kinda bum'd from this as I was hoping to send one to my Fiance for being so nice and buying it for me, installing it and all. Then I realised that this was really a good idea, how much would someone be able to make in-game off of AH'ing neatherwhelps for 1000g or some other insane amount over and over.
I would say that the only reason to buy the CE over the regular edition is the pet. It gives you a certain status on the game, but that is about it. If you don't care about pets...don't bother.

You could try contacting Blizzard to see if they are willing to switch your validation to his account.
Then use your CE code.
If they wont do that, then just ask them to validate your own with the CE code anyeway, assuming you cannot do it yourself.

No, you won’t. Once you enter a key for the upgrade, the option to enter a key will be gone and you will not be able to upgrade using the Collector’s Edition key.

Thanks guys but there is one thing, us on the European servers require to send Blizzard Europe some paperwork in order to get our pets, so there is still hope as I opened the CE bundle and the xpac inside was a normal one with a normal CD Key, so I could indeed give that to my buddy and still send Blizz Europe the paperwork with my account management screenshot printout as they require that in order to have the pets activated for us, plus because of that we get to have TWO pets :P yes, we get the netherwhelp and lurky the murloc.
