I usually just crash on the couch/bed and it seems to do the trick.

I used to know someone who swore by taking two paracetemol (~ aspirin) with a glass of coke, eating a banana, then making yourself vomit. Oddly enough I've never tried this one Smiley: rolleyes

Personally, I'd say bacon sarnies and lots of tea.

I'll also second the chocolate milk suggestion.

DON'T GET DRUNK!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I don't have a hangover remedy because my hangovers consisted of massive amounts of barfing, so nothing would stay down that would help. This would be why I don't drink much.

The best I've seen is coca-cola and a fried chicken sandwich from Burger King. The coke I understand; don't really get the chicken sandwich, but I got it from a friend at work and have used it 3 times with really good effect.

I always eat bread. It works really well for me. If my stomach is hurting and I feel wicked hungover I chow down on a few pieces of bread. No toppings. I usually eat enough pieces to feel "full". Then I sit there with a huge glass of water and struggle through it. By the time the water is done I'm right as rain.

The reason for a hangover is that the alcohol in your system acts like salt water, but rather than your whole body becoming dehydrated, it is just your brain, thus the headach. The nausea is caused by the fact that alcohol is the product of fermentation - in other words ROT - and your body is poisoned by the toxins. Most often it is an exessive consumption of alcohol and the afterafects are due to mild poisoning. It should be a warning to you that you have overindulged and if you had continued to drink you most likely would have succumbed. My biggest suggestion to you is to learn restraint, but barring this...

You need to hydrate your brain tissue. This can only be done by drinking fresh fluids such as water, juice or sports drinks. As a preventative measure you should ideally drink a large amount right before bed as mentioned in previous posts. If you were unable to do such, then first thing in the morning will do, but will be less effective as your body has been suffering for hours and you now need to recover.

"Hair of the dog that bit you" is a long held cure for a hang over, however, this is not a good idea. This would be like trying to cure cyanide poisoning by taking more cyanide. You are only compounding the problem if you use this method and if you were close to needing hospitalization for alcohol poisoning the night before, you may send you body into shock. The curative effects felt with this method are due to the pain relieving effects of the alcohol and do not address the underlying issues.

You need to give your body the nutrients it needs to combat the destruction caused by your "bender". Foods rich in electrolytes, vitamin C, and Iron will help to rebuild your defences, Yogurt will restore the "good" bacteria in your digestive tract and Breads provide a nice gentle thing for your stomach to process.

I would reccomend beginning with a large glass of water and 1 slice lightly buttered toast. Once you have finnished the toast your stomach should be settled quite nicely. Next eat a small yogurt (strawberry is great for this as it contains more vitamin C than a glass of OJ and it also has the anti-oxidents which will help). If you still have room a good spinach omlette would be ideal for the iron content, but if spinach is not your thing try having steak and eggs to provide you with protein and iron.

If you really need the pain relief to hit you quickly then I would suggest Advil Liquid gels, they are designed to help those of us who get migrains and are very fast acting. Just keep in mind that they are very strong for most people and I have seen them knock large men on their butt, so only take one.

Just be sure that you address the underlying reasons for your pain, don't just hide behind medication.

Excellent post Mishkarah, I was starting to despair when no one addressed the science behind it. You were correct, and I'd like to add a couple points.

1) Water of course is the most important for the dehydration.

2) Sports drinks are great as they incorperate 1 as well as providing the electrolytes you need to actively counter the dehydration. (Fruits help with this too, but sports drinks are a nice concentrated source.)

3) One of the ways alcohol is processed in your body is by using the free glucose in your bloodstream. This lack of energy is one of the reasons you feel so sluggish the next day. Sports drinks provide this as do most sweet/starchy foods. (like bread) Eating bread also gives it a soothing feeling. Think of it as an apology hug to your stomach.

4) A couple of Tylenol will dull the pain until you can rebalance your systemm.

BTW, 2 tylenol and a gatorade worked wonders on a co-worker of mine a few years ago. I experimented with him every Sunday for a summer. ;)
